Title: How can I employ a forester in N. WV
Post by: captinjack on June 01, 2006, 08:47:24 AM
Ilhave owned 75 acres of woods for the last 24 years and think it is about time to do a forest plan.  The poplar trees are getting pretty big and I don't want to do something stupid.

I have contacted several foresters, however they don't ever show up!  What is it with this profession?  Are you foresters busy like a good stone mason and can't show up?

I know that this will be billable and not a freebie, but no takers yet.

Any foresters in the Morgantown, WV area that practices forestry?  I need assistance now.  I've been on a bunch of web sites and read all the publications, but I need someone to cruise my acreage and talk to me regarding an action plan for the future.  Even if someone only has a little time on their hands, a short visit would be appreciated.  I really am looking for a long term relationship but so far can't even establish a short term relationship.

Foresters are client driven, perhaps you need to be more assertive.  And, are you truely talking to foresters, or to forestry consultants.  Big difference.  Talk to your local Forest Service for a list of "approved" foresters.

There are a number of professoinal Consulting Foresters in your area of West Virginia. Contact the Association of Consulting Foresters of America, Inc. at www.acf-foresters.com for a list of consulting foresters in your area.

Also contact the local conservation district forester serving the area for possible "free" help.

When you select a forester, you need to set up a specific time and date for them to visit with you on the property. If they want the work, they will be there. Be sure that they are certified to write Landowner Forest Stewardship Plans.

WV University also has an excellent forestry department and extension service in Morgantown.
