Title: luckly I got a recieipt
Post by: gary on July 04, 2006, 10:00:38 AM
I bought gas at the local convience store yesterday and a phone card. Normally I don't get a receipt for gas. but I asked for one because of the phone card. I was home about a half hour and someone knocks on the door. I opened the door to find a police officer there. He asked me if I was the person who had gotten gas at such and such store. I said yes why.  He informed me that I had left without paying for my gas. After I thought for a moment I said I paid for my gas and have a receipt. I showed it to the officer.  There was another officer at the store at this time. The one with me told the other one that he was looking at a receipt showing that I paid for the gas. The people working at the store  were still saying I drove off without paying. It took about a half hour with a police officer standing on my porch and all my neighbors watching to get it straightened out.
I was not thinking fast enough or I would have let him arrest me. Then sued the store. As it was the store called and appoligized and gave me about $20.00 in coupons.
THE MORAL OF THIS STORY ALWAYS GET A RECEIPT

Stopped in on Friday and got $52 worth of gas.
Went in to pay cash and after a rather long wait, I gave her the pump #.
Had my cash all counted out (long wait) and she says that'll be $10.
I go to hand her the cash and caught it and said: "how much was that?"
She says $10 again.
I told her I would gladly pay $10, but she sure as heck had better give me a receipt!
She asked my pump # again and turns out she heard me say pump #4, but was thinking #2 so that what she punched in. ::) ::)

I had a similar incident in Georgia a while back.... paid in cash and pumped the gas, then switched drivers as we came home. A half mile down the street, a gas station attendant nearly ran me off the road yelling that I hadnt paid for the gas. When I returned to the station, fit to be tied, the attendant that took my money for the gas admitted that I had paid for it. They had seen me as the driver when I drove in and then my wife as we drove out and thought it was two separate cars??

Since then, I ALWAYS get a reciept no matter how I pay for it.

I worked in a convenience store for several years. It is kind of nice that your police will do what it takes to get things straightened out. We had to watch the pumps really closely because the year before I started working there they had $6000.00 worth of drive-offs. (We are not taking a really big town either). We had one person at the register at all time and so we normally would get the license plate number, call the cops and NOTHING would happen. They were to busy to deal with little things like $10.00 worth of gas. So the owner sent that police department a bill for all the drive-offs in one month. They got a big laugh at the department but still no help with getting the money. Now I will give some of them credit because some just forgot and would realize it and come back and pay but I would say that 90% of them were just people trying to get by with it. (AND THEY DID thanks to the fine officers we had at the time  smiley_inspector.)
It is to bad that you had to be dealt with like you were but I am glad that they were doing something about it. Why did the officer not just take the receipt to the store and deal with it there? Hope your neighbors are not gossipers?

getoverit - you would not have had to worry about us coming after you here we had to many sicko's  smiley_whacko  come into the store. Heck we did not even want to wait on some of them yikes_smiley .

Years back I was on my way to Floreeda with da dually, I stopped at a Pilot statioon for some giddy-up-go juice fer da truck and me. It was a good price, so I was filling everything but the ashtray, both truck tanks and the one in the back too.

When I finally got inside I had ta return a rented coffee too bad to stand in da line fer long, so I went ta da little boys room first.

When I got to da cashier and told her what pump, da lady says "$20 bucks please" .... So I told her (bein' da honest Canuckistanian I am) "No ma'am, it was $132".

She says "Nope, dat man already paid and left, yer da only pump unpaid, $20 bucks please.".

I couldn't convince her no matter how hard I tried. So in the end I insisted that she take my contact info. and I wrote out that she wouldn't take more than $20 even though I was offering $132 and got her to sign it. I also got a receipt for the $20 in diesel.

How someone could pay $132 for $20 and not notice is beyond me, but to his day I've never heard a word about it.  ::)

In this neck of the woods the service stations have a big problem with dirve-offs, but it's after hours!!! People have been pumping the inground tanks overnight, up through the fill holes!!!

The hoods in the woods camp I worked for would drive from Mexico City to Northern Canada. One time out west we fueled two vans up and off we drove with me pulling the trailer behind my van. About a mile or so up the road we got pulled over. Turns out the other trip leader thought I had paid and I thought he had paid. We fixed it no problem, but trust me that never happened again. ,,,,,,,,And ahhh yes, Mexico I drove overland 4 times from Pittsburgh, let just say we have had many adventures. THEY DON'T have ambulances as we know them down there (that's why there are so many roadside monuments to the fatalities). I must say it was true adventure from Bandito's to getting the vans stuck in the sand at 16,000' on Orizaba heading for the high hut on the mountain. There is even one great story of a trailer catching fire and burning to the ground in Wyoming.(two batteries in the trailer arced and lt it on fire, with stove fuel and lots of plastics and nylon inside, I DIDN'T PACK THAT TRAILER). One staff member drove 1-2 hours on a trailer flat in the middle of the night (anti sway units really work!) not much left of the hub even!!

I liekt eh fact that the gas station still won't take $50 bills.  it took me $58 bucks to fill the truck and they still won't take a $50.

I just don't understand

I always pay with a credit card, around here the stations have started a pre-pay thing, which I guess is good.  it's a pain, but it keeps the prices down....

I'm at a local service station almost every day filling up one thing or another. I always get receipts for business reasons and proof if I bought bad gas (this I learned the hard way). By the time I get inside the girls at the counter already have my receipt printed out for me. Now that's service.  :) One day I was in there and a local cop was getting the info. for a drive-off incident. I was glad that he was on the ball catching the bad guys.

This reminds me of something that happened last winter. At six o'clock in the morning I realized I needed a new pair of insulated leather gloves for work that day, as it was about fifteen degees out at the time. So I stop by the local Wally World and pick up a pair on the way to the job. One checkout was open, right by the door, thirty feet from the greeter. There wasn't much going on at the time, so the greeter watches the clerk, a lady I know, sell me the gloves and bag them up. While walking out the door the greeter stopped me, and checked my receipt against the items in the bag, one pair of gloves. I'm all for working hard to keep prices low, and I know that there are alot of bad guys/girls out there, but I think they could have used a little better judgement. If I was going to steal something from Wally World it wouldn't be a seven dollar pair of gloves at six am in a nearly deserted store. I'm glad this person was doing their job, but sometimes I still get a chuckle out of it.

Frickman, I think WallyWorld does that as much to check up on the cashiers as the customers. ::)

Murf, the guy that paid for your deiselberry juice probably used a credit card and never even knew he had paid too much.  I keep my reciepts, but I think I'll start looking at them, too. :D :D

Probably paid with a credit/debit card and had a heart attack when he got his statement.

About 2 weeks ago my wife, Jane and I drove into a gas station.  Jane was driving and filled the tank and said she was headed to the restroom.  I got out and got a newspaper and went inside and paid.  About a minute later she came out and we got ready to drive off.  Thats when we heard the intercom. "One of you gonna pay?"   We stopped dead in our tracks. Jane said " I thought you paid"  I said, "I figured you paid since you were in there so long".  I went in and paid and got to drive.

last year did a quick dive off the freeway to plug in the handsfree for the pnone and answer a call. Pulled into the servo driveway, and 30 sec later pulled out again.  Thinking nothing of it.

Knock on front door later that evening. A couple of tired looking uniforms standing there asking the questions. Do I own this car, was i driving it, did I enter this servo, did I get fuel etc. A receipt was no good to me......but it seems that someone HAD driven off at the same time without paying for LEADED. In the end it was easy to explain I cant even get a LEADED nozzle into my filler neck.

A moment of trepidation.
