Man that will heave your footers up on ya. ::) 8 foot is deep even for Alaska. We have around half a foot in this part of Alaska right now. Last week that was a half foot of mud but now it's frost as it's 0 out and a 30 to 70 mile an hour wind. :-/ Aint fit to set foot out right now with the frozen dust storm we got going on hear. >:(

Down here if we've got a drain a foot below ground it's probably ok. Water pipe that is not running better be 18" or more.
This winter the ground really never froze other than a crust on top a couple of times.
Thats why you are up there and I'm down here! (https://forestryforum.com/smile/cool.gif)
As of January 1 we had 4" to 6" of frost in Southern MN. By Feb 1 (when we had to start ripping it to move dirt on a site job) there was 18" to 24". As of now (almost done ripping) there is as much 4 to 5 feet. Now the cotton pickin' weatherman says 65 and rain by the weekend. ::)
With all that frost in the ground you got noplace for rain water to go! :o I hope it's not a lot of rain or we will see you on the news some more!

Here in northern Minnesota, the frost level under US Highway 2 is only 19 to 22 feet, so road restrictions will begin this weekend. :)
Minnesota-boy are you sure you don't mean inches. :-/
Yep, with 40 or more iches of ice on Upper Red Lake, under the bare highway it most likely is feet.
So what do you mean by road restrictions? Down here in MO we get our share of potholes, but winter breakup up there must be incredible. Can you describe what happens?
Restrictions are put on as to what weight can be hauled on what road. In our county of the UP, most county and all secondary roads will have NO LOAD resrictions. Which means only empty trucks, and sometimes they are too heavy too.
Our roads are rated as to their capacity. Major highways are 9 or 10 tons per axel. Most secondary roads are 7 tons and any unmarked secondary is limited to 5 tons per axel during breakup. Breakup is limited to 8 weeks from the time restrictions are put on, but I've seen roads continue to be soft for months. Some township and even some county roads may become impassable during breakup. The sites that are soft usually occur at the same place each year, but I have seen axel deep ruts in place that were never soft in the past because of unusual fall rain amounts. Sometimes the school busses have to detour because they cannot get through. Cars may be stuck with both axels on the (in the?) ground.
