Title: Big pile of SYP for a LT15 and a middle aged fat man
Post by: Don K on May 11, 2007, 09:45:13 PM
I hauled in these logs for a friend. He wants them sawed to redo a old barn. 20 logs in all. Beetles got them last year. the largest is 23 inches on the small end. I'm going to saw 1X12's for board and batten siding, then some 2X framing to replace some older boards.

This is the biggest log on my mill.

Here are some 17 inch boards from that log. ;D

Might take me a few days to finish ,but I'm loving every minute of it. ;D

Hey Stew, Where are you? There is a catfish at the end of that pile.  :D :D ;)

that's some pretty pine, Donkey.

I believe I'd have to give him the 17" boards and threaten him if he rips them . :D

He ask me yesterday if these logs might make some good lumber?  :o :o  I told him to come over this afternoon and he could see for himself. ;D  He didn't come today, but I saved out those two to show him.

I got 24 1X12's, 3 1X10's, 1 1X6, and 5 1X4's, plus those two 17 inchers. Didn't have enough left over to start a good fire. :D

I'll guess I'll get back on the mill about six in the morning. Sunup to sundown as the old folks say.

DonK,

That LT 15 is looking sweet ;D.  I love that shed, too.  Need me one of them.  When I get over that way again, I definitely want a good look at that saw-shed.  I know what you will be doing all day tomorrow :D.  Those 17" boards are mostly clear :).  That was a fine tree log.

I'm still planning to come on the 25th. Save some logs back and we'll make some lumber.  ;)

Hey Don...........unrelated to the topic (what else is new);  looks like you're wearing a Relay for Life T-shirt?  Our relay's tonight (May 11th);  we'll probably raise about $160,000;  not bad for a county with less than 30,000 people.   8)

Standing beside those boards make you look small.Good job you have doing there.Probaly too late, but I did a run in for horses out of 10" boards and used 4" batten.I saw this on a building that I was driving by on the way to work.It looked good.I had to stop and get some measurement on the B and B.The only reason he did it that way because he got a deal on 10" and 4" boards up the road.

Danny,  Those were some clear boards. Out of 24 from that one log, I would say only about six boards had knots from shedding limbs when the tree was very young. These are the logs I have been coveting for weeks now.  :D :D ;D The shed was nice yesterday during the hot part of the day. The last two years I have been sawing out in the open and did I say how much I dislike the heat. smiley_sweat_drop  smiley_sun

Terry, Don't worry about the lack of big logs to saw, I have plenty of my own to cut for my wood shop. I have come up with a way to flip those big logs for now. I'm using a comealong. Needs refinement though. Maybe we can engineer something. I have some ideas. 25th will be here before you know it.

Thurlow,  That is a old relay shirt. 2000 I think. I did the cooking for my wife's daycare team this year. Won best camp food (ribs). We raised over 51,000. Big feat consideringther was only about 14 teams and last year the relay committee was going to stop having it in Grove Hill because they didn't raise much in 2006. The goal this year was 32,000. In Thomasville this year where I live I think they raised well over a 100,000. City of about 5000. My daddy is a survivor. :)

cfarm, I like to use 12 inch boards with 3 inch battens. I have used 10's and 3's also. It does make for some nice siding.

Don, sometimes I put up a big tarp over the mill when sawing because the mill is not permanently located.  But, I need a shed like yours (and some logs like yours, too ;D).

You wont be fat for long!  Nice looking wood your turning out.  Does he need them that long?  I quit making long boards, just to make long boards.  If I need something longer I'll cut it, otherwise I cut the log to 8 or 10 and then mill it.  Too hard to handle the long boards around, and they usually get cut down anyway later.

I've already lost 5lbs, and the mills only been running a month or so, in the evenings after work.   No need for a gym membership!

John, The walls of the barn he will be restoring are about 12 feet on two sides and 20 feet on the gable ends. I will try to make some pics of the barn to post. I will probably be invovled in the rebuild pretty heavily also. I will document the process when it happens this fall.    Don

Just got around to posting pics of Saturdays work. Sawed all this out of 4 logs. 1257 bdft. Well, all but the two 17 inchers and 24 1X12's which I sawed Fri. evening. Not too bad for a LT 15 and one man.  :D ;D

This is a 16 inch cant being slabbed into 1X12's. 8)

Here is my helper for the day. Still a little young to pull boards, but she loves to sift the sawdust. :D

I only sawed 4 logs on that load, so that leaves 16 more to go.  Oh yea Tom, I took him the 17 inch boards and he put them in his shed at home instead of the barn with the other lumber. His wife asked him what he was going to do with them. He replied that he would build something with them. You would have thought they were gold bricks going into Fort Knox. :D

That is a beautiful stack of lumber!  The reason that your production was so good was because of that helper ;D.

So thats where the bugs went.
They went through TN a few yrs ago,, some areas look like a nuclear waste land.
Log prices bottomed out , industry didn't want the blued wood (even though it is still the same as fresh)  The impoverished area I live in got slammed.
Now its hard to find syp and white pine.

We had alot of bugs last summer and a lot of stress due to drought which encouraged them I guess. You can ride the highways and see lots of single dead trees.

Don, Woodmizer might take notice of your production rate and ask you to slow down a little. :D Thats a nice stack of lumber for a days work, I dont care what kinda mill your running.

Hey , what an advertisement! :o  If an out of shape man like me can turn out wood like that with a manual mill, think what a young man that don't have to stop and Ben-Gay his joints could do. :D :D :D  If I had a edger I could really smoke it. I spend half my time edging after every log.  Don

I do the same thing Don.I useally don't saw much more than two logs and than I start to edge.Sure is slow.By the time I get 2-3 logs all cleaned up,I could of sawed 2 logs.Works for me.The place I bought my saw from built an edger.I saw them at a show and he wanted me to buy it.I pointed him to the wife and said convince her to write out the check and I will take it home. There was nothing behind me on the way home.  :(  I couldn't make it pay,I only saw for myself.

That wide stuff can really rack up the production.  Even so, Don, you are kicking DanG to pile up that kind of lumber with only the help of a 4-legged encourager ;D.

Yea. I really like cutting the wide stuff. ;D ;D My last customer brought me some big old spruce pines and wanted 6 inch stuff cut from it for wall paneling. Had to saw about 1000bdft and it was tough. Twice as many cuts for the same money. Really cuts down on the profit per hour. :(  Don

How did you find the spruce pine?  Did it make good lumber?

Spruce to me is a strange beast. You will find some that has a twist in it especially when big, that makes it squirrely when cutting. In my opinion the wider the better. I find it to be a heavy wood if it comes out of a creek bottom. Hard to find one that grows very straight for very far. :D When dry it is pretty light. I've used it as stud framing but would not use it as joists or rafters. To me it doesn't have the strength of the other pines we have. Lumber companies around here will not saw it,but it makes good chips.

My friend saw some T&G 10" stuff on a camphouse wall and had to have some. I would have wanted wider than the 6" he got me to saw. It has pretty knots. I like to saw it for my own use as I know what it will do in the stack, but try to warn people it has a flaky disposition. :D

I have never sawn any.  I guess it does not have the strength to make the SYP grade or it dries different in the kilns, cause like you said, the big commercial pine mills won't take it.  A guy called me and said he a whole log truck load of large spruce pine, but I said no.  Trying to saw up a whole tractor trailer load at one time is too much for me and my little machine ;D
