My little manual Norwood just melted out of the snowbank, and jobs are piling up. :-/ So today was the first day back sawing, all small diameter 8' hardwood. I cut 1200 feet, all 4/4, and my butt is dragging. :( Sure glad I do this as a hobby, and not to make a living.
1200 BF of 4/4 hardwood on a manual mill...Small DIB no less, you da man chet, you da man. 8) 8) 8)
Was da man. ::) Right now I feel whipped, even after a couple beers to build my strengh back up. :-[
Chet I think it's going to take a few more beers till ya start feeling better! :) I swear I broke my back atleast twice today and beer #3 is starting to kick in and make me feel a little more human. :D
Steve
Chet, maybe set aside the brew and try a metamusal/Geritol cocktail. ;D ;)
Prune juice, Jeff, Prune juice. It'll make you get up and go. :D
Even if dat cocktail might work, my bet is dat da brew goes down a whole lot better. ;) I'm not one fur dem high society cocktails. Give me beer. 8) 8)
OK I gotta ask, what is a metamusal/Geritol cocktail? I've had many a strange drinks but nothing like this!
Steve
Never tried it, but I'll bet it tastes like Tom's prune juice. :D
You have to mix these two. Gently shaken, never stirred, and you really should to be an old yooper to take it.

Stick to the beer Chet stick to the beer!
Speaking of booze does anyone know how to make a stil? As I'm alone while I saw I think of many things and I was thinking about having one right up there with the mill. I could use all my lumber that I burn to keep the thing going. Any ideas?
Steve
I saw a dog lap some unleaded gas and chase his tail so hard he landed on his back with his feet in the air. ......ran out of gas. ;D
You live to far north, you gotta live south have 3 hounds and an accent like the ARKANSAWYER to have a still. What you need is fermented beaver urine. Thats what keeps Kevin going... ;D
Hey Jeff should it be poured over ice or just chill it? Sounds very yummy and I'm going to try it right after I build an outhouse up at the mill. :D Can't see myself doing the 100 yard dash to the house when that drink kicks in.
Steve
HAHHAHHAA :D :D :D
THE BEAVER URINE???
I slipped that one in there just perfect... :D
No no really is it easy to make a still? I think it would be cool to have one and supply the town drunks I could make a fortune and retire. Does ARKY really have a still? Wonder if he could share his reciepes with me! And Kevin has one to? Man I think I'm in the wrong buisiness!
Steve
Hate to admitt it but dat fermented beaver pith sounds better den Jeff's cocktail. ;D
Chet don't forget da smoked suckers! You can't drink beer without suckers. ;)
Mark
I need some of those Mark! But first of all what are they? And where do you get them and should I drink local beer with them or that other over priced stuff?
Steve
Hi Steve
They are an ugly fish that looks like a carp. We used to catch them each spring in a creek that drained a big beaver pond. You could use a spear, dip net, but the funnest way was to just jump right in can catch them with your hands. There were hundreds in a small pool but they move fast and are pretty slippery. My Yooper uncle used to do the smoking. He made them really salt so you had to drink something with them. That was the object of the game! :D
Now that's good thinking on your uncles behalf Mark. There's nothing better then having a good reason to drink way to many beers!
Steve
Suckers, those are fertilizer fish! Too many y bones and there bottom feeders to boot. :-X
1200 bf ain't too bad for a day...... Did that include stacking on sticks and edging on the mill also?
I think stills are ill-eagle ;D if I remember correctly. Sumptin about tax or sumptin........ ::)
Jason
Re Stills..
Yes.. they are easy to make, but in NZ you can buy them ready made from the local homebrew shop. Basically a big Stainless drum, electric water heater element in the bottom, with a sealed lid and copper distillation tower on top, feeding into a condenser tube. The wash is fermented like homebrew beer, run thru the still, then charcoal filtered. Basically you make high proof vodka, then add the falvour you want.
I think there are 'legal' issues for you guys in the USA, but this is the web page with some info on commercial units.

Re Stills
Now I see.... In the US the units are sold as 'Distillation Water Purifiers' and 'Essential Oil Extractors'. And I guess some might even be used for that ::)
Oh I don't think still are illigal in all 50 states, I sure Kentucky, Tenn. and Ark. will have a little argument there. at least thats what I am told. :D :D :D
Building the still is easy-the hard partis-----
1 Operating a still is just as hard work as sawing.
2 Must be well hidden,as federal agents take a dim view of owner operators.
3 Clientel-a bunch of drunk moochers hanging around all the time -just like the FF
ON THE OTHER HAND-
1 If done right that stuff is GOOOOOOOOOD111 8) 8) 8) 8)
2 Is an extremely good remedy for sore mucels
3 It will make you sing and dance, and other unusual activities
Look sumpin like dis??

Or maybe DIS??

We had a ATF permit for a 500 gallon still, in Arkyland. Never got the mash to ferment right?? It's NOT as easy as you would think. Takes a devious mind?? ::) ;D
I remember spearing suckers in upper michigan as a kid smoked them in a old refridigerator.
bullheads to.then drinking beer in grandpas basement with him and uncles.
We used to sucker spear every year in da U.P. near Curtis.
Next 3 posts were deleted, as the topic turned inappropriate for this website. Enough said.
Thank you, Jeff!
Why? What was so wrong with the posts? I'm open to anything can you send me the posts?
Steve
No need to send it to you, you made it. This site is listed as a resource for forestry information in several places for young people. Making a still is border line for the general board but the subject after that was absolutely inappropriate. As I said enough said.
Sorry about the posts Jeff and yes I know that kids read and learn here and I keep reminding myself about that! Sometimes my brain just don't think right!
Steve
No problem Steve. Its my job to remind you. ;) Now lets talk about spearing suckers!!
Speaking of suckers has anyone done any fishing yet? I'm sitting here doing paper work and bank stuff that I hate to do and the sun is shining and I was thinking that it would be a great day to go fishing. We have salmon and trout here but we have to wait till the season opens. It sure is nice to be fishing and not having any phones ringing!
Does anyone have any stories about the big one that got away?
Steve
jeff: you mentioned spearing suckers near Curtis, If you can identify the creek or stream you may have been on our property, or near it. Spearing was actually a bigger deal years ago but has diminished recently for some reason. I was born and raised where sandtown road meets M117.
I am not sure the name of the rd, but it's gravel with a tube, or was it two? Its the stream out of the lake. You turn to the left before you get to curtis.
You must know the place, we would spear from the tubes in either direction, and I would go through the tubes, at least the one.
We went every year for 10 years, and then after totaling out my truck on the way home we quit going. that was in about 85 or 86 We always went Mothers day weekend and hit the black suckers most times. I went the year I got married with my father-in-law, brother-in-law and grandfather in law. We left on a friday afternoon and got to curtis about 6 o'clock. We decided to go to the shipwreck inn till it got dark. At that time it was a small local bar, last time there it was a restaurant :-/
Anyway, we were shooting pool and this tall very shapely tall good looking blond motioned me over to her side of the bar by using the index finger curl, you know what I mean, don't know how else to describe it. It means "Come here", well all my in-laws started laughing and said get over there! I walked over, and she wanted me to go with her to the fire hall dance. My new in-laws of course were trying to get me to go. I kept making excuses, and she kept coming up with answers, said she would even drop me off at the creek when she was "done with me."
Well, as tempting as that was, I stayed true ;D Mostly because I knew the story would beat me home!! After that, and until he died, my father in-law would always greet me with that finger curl motion and a grin.
By the way, we always brought enough suckers home after just 2 or 3 hours of spearing. Usually way more then enough.
