i think it is a 24 or 25 hp. they got the points set and it is running good now. but it is not charging. i would like to know any short cuts you guys have on the charging system.

Get the battery fully charged and load tested first. You can then disconnect the regulator and check the alternator output across the two wires. It should be about 35volts AC. If that is ok it should read 14.5 volts DC at the battery with the regulator hooked up and full throttle. If not the regulator is pooched.

I thought these were all electronic ignition? I guess if you got them set it must not be so? DA  :-[

this one has a small cover up on top of the engine case that houses the points. i did not see inside it, but dad told me the points were inside it. said they worked off a cam or something. he also said they were only breaking open about as much as a cigarette paper. they got it running better than before but still no charge going to the battery, or at least the guage is not showing it.  the charging system is putting out 35 volts, they are checking into the regulator now. this engine charges off of a flywheel armature i guess as there is no external alternator or generator. like i say it is an 87 model.

i think they have narrowed it down to the little voltage thing that is out. does anyone know where to get one of those from.

Wood-Mizer stocks parts for the engines sold on their mills.  I have the 24 on my 86 and sparks has been able to get me anything I ever needed. :)

you can email him or instant message him via his forum profile, or you can just call wood-mizer and ask for parts. Any of those fellas can help ya, or ask for Rick Lauman. Thats Sparks

If Miser can't supply a part that old, Foley Belsaw "Outdoor Power Equipment" might have a Kohler module that will work. (P/N 5980047 @  $27.50)  They're at 1-800-821-3452 .
