Title: Porcupine quill floats
Post by: limbrat on August 19, 2007, 07:42:46 PM
I am about out and the tackle store says they cant get them. After looking on line it seems that the fishing floats were made from the african porcupine and they are no longer avaible. Are the quills from the porcupines in snow snake country big enough for floats or would i be better off looking for avian quills? :)

It depends on what you are trying to float.  If you're looking for floats for your float plane, definitely not.  If you're trying to float a fish hook, probably not.  The quills from our porcupines in Minnesota are about 3 inches long and about 5/32 inch in diameter.

Thank you it dont look like the native porcupine will be filling the market for 5 to 8" fishing floats.
