Title: this what your lookin for?(SHOOTOUT)
Post by: woodmills1 on April 26, 2003, 06:10:06 AM
finally got caught up on things that didn't get done during the extended arctic winter we had.  Cutting red oak for fence wood and for some trailer decking when I made these passes to resize a few pieces.  mind you they were made with whatever blade was on the mill at the time, all of which have many sharpens and board feet on them.

Sheesh, you hardwood guys must have the nicest fences :)...and trailer decks 8) anywhere. The only Red Oak we have up here in Northern B.C. is in the building supply stores for a small fortune. By the way, pretty strait cutting. What kind of mill??

woodmizer HD40.  Yes nice fences when the 16' log is a first cut and the first 8 passes around it give clear lumber.  My customer is a local fence company and they have been happy with the product I cut for them.  They were paying $1.50/bd ft and getting #2 or less that was at 7/8".  I give them 4/4 at around 1 1/16 but they are taking the whole tree at $1.25.  I harvest the trees, mostly culls that are being shaded by others or multiple trunks.  I also get the benifit of lots of nice clear first and second pass lumber that is less than 6" wide or 8' long since that is the lower limit.  As I said the blades that made those thin pieces have lots of use, and I sharpen and set on woodmizer equipment and they are .045" standard double hard. IMHO you can't go wrong with

Yes thats it.  I could not read the dial so how thin is it.  I have some that are 0.028 out of white oak.  I had some that were thinner butt Granny wiped her nose with them and threw them in the burn barrel.  >:(
I am sure if You Northern boys seen what we put in trailer decks and fences here out of oak would make you cry.

that was the thinest piece that was uniform across width and along length.  I had one at .025" but it was tapered slightly to .040" across the length.  I just sold some full 8/4 red oak that was 2 1/4" thick and 11" wide.  this was to a construction company.  they requested the 11" width to fit an aplication on a low bed trailer.  It was 50% FAS with even some of the center cuts looking almost like #2, but they paid $1.50/bd ft so they got the very good with the lower grade.  they are a reletively new customer and seem happy with my lumber.
