We've been using a new roof sheathing product on this house called Zip System. It is an osb sheathing with a water resistant coating on it. There is a proprietary tape made for it that fits in their dispensing gun. It makes quick work of drying in.

The plusses are the waterproofing layer stays on the roof and it's safer to go back up there. Tarpaper doesn't hold up for too long if its wet and the wind howls, both of which we've been having. It's also pretty easy to go for a ride on it. The coating is much like a lightweight burlap embeded in the old phenolic plastic, I have no idea what it really is but it has pretty good traction. It is a little heavier, the dispensing gun is a bit unwieldy but much less so than a roll of paper and a bag of buttonkaps. The price isn't good yet, all told it worked out to around 18-20 per sheet by the time it was taped. But figure the price of tarpaper, nails and labor against that. It's supposed to be good for 90 days exposure.

Here was another reason I wanted down as quick as possible, the hill just keeps on dropping on this side. We knocked out most of the soffit and fascia on this face today. The red wall sheathing is just barn paint on ply, he'll tyvek in spring when he's up to siding it.

I dunno if I'd skip the paper all together but I'd let the roofer do it.   ;)

I was just thinking about that stuff for my little roof project.  What stinks about that is my father in law just retired from Huber and can't get me any deals on their stuff any more...
