A NEW CONTEST FOR ALL REGISTERED FORESTRY FORUM MEMBERS!
(Click here for registration application to join the Forestry Forum!) (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=register)
I'm sure many of you are aware of the new T.V. series called "Ax Men" premiering Sunday evening, March 9th at 10:PM eastern time on the History Channel. Maybe less of you realize that one of the Logging crews featured on the series, Stump-Branch Logging, is represented here by Forestry Forum members Mindy and Stump-Branch Logging owner brushape.
Together, the Forestry Forum and Mindy have put together a contest that will run the length of the first season. We will have a prize each week, and a special prize drawing the week the last new episode runs. All together, about 13 contests. Actually its one big contest, because each week adds to the next. In a little while, I'll be placing a link below to within the Forestry Forum where members will learn the details and how to enter. :)
Many of the prizes will be coming from the Stump Branch Logging Store you can check it out at
http://www.stumpbranchlogging.com/store/

Hello Everyone,
Today Melvin, along with other Ax Men, is flying out to LA. They will all be doing interviews with various shows throughout the week. The big one will be Jimmy Kimmel Live on Thursday March 6th. Jimmy Kimmel airs on ABC at 12:05am. I bet those of you in Canada can get that show! Its a little late for me so I'll be taping.
Talk to you soon,
Mindy
Lets fire up the contest, I just finished watching the 1st episode. 8) Good show.
You can watch it early if you have Comcast HD. It's under On Deman/HD/News/History channel
The Contest has officially began!
I have to check my notes when I get home but just wanted to say that it was a great show.
Jeff,
It won't let me get a registration app. I click to get one and it goes to the Forestry forum link with all the boards? Am I doing someting wrong?
ADAMINMO
Yea, you are. You are clicking the link to register as a new member of the Forestry Forum. :)
Click on the link in the next post down. :)
This is about the only time I wish I had cable. :(
About the only other time would have been to catch "The Soprano's" ending so I knew what everyone was talking about. ::)
I don't think you missed much with The Soprano's.You should be able to rent that now.Shows how much I am interested in it.I have no idea. But this Ax Men you are missing out on.They log a whole differant way than what we are use to.There is a link to buy the series on one of the posts here.I feel it would be worth $80 or so to get it,if you can't watch it.I have a satilite TV.No cable where I am.
I think the series can be purchased for $40 for the 13 episodes, but it won't ship until July, well after the first run season ends.
Week one's Scores have been tabulated, and a winner drawn from this weeks high scores. :)
Contest will be reset after the airing of episode two, later tonight. :)

Entries are down this week!! You still have today and part of tomorrow to enter this weeks contest!
I hate to say it but the show is on past my bed time, I would like to see it moved up at least one time slot. I would also like to see more of the operation and spend a little less time on the skyline.
Both VCR's and DVR's solve your problem. :)
I just don't understand it when folks complain about the time slot. ::)
It also replays 4 or 5 times a week and again the next week or two.
Yep. :)
You can watch it several times during the week.
This week's contest prize is going to be a Stump Branch Hat Autographed by Melvin!
Well, since I don't have cable or a dish I have only seen the first episode at my daughter's house. Since then I have even bought vcr tapes and given them to my son in law but he "forgets" to record them with promises that they will be on more this week.
Still have only seen the first one. ::)
:D :D :D :D
Hey, can't miss CSI though. ::)
Tonight at 8pm Eastern, episode 4 airs again.

I am 8 & 1/2. My dad has a sawmill and a chain saw. I have a chainsaw too. I like to cut trees. I have been watching the show. My dad tapes it. We watch it when my home work is done. My dad gave me the name edger boy.
I can not wait to show off the shirt at school.
Thank you
Hey! Thats great! Well welcome to the Forestry Forum! Is your Dad a member too?
Be sure to have him email me, or instant message the information so we can send you your stuff! If you go to www.stumpbranchlogging.com/store there is a kids section and you might want to find your size there if you think the adults sizes are not right.
Edger Boy's dad is a member. Me JSNH. The show has inspired him to at least do his homework. Working to get his reading/writing up to speed. He just wants to be out in the woods.
I tape the show and we watch it after the home work is finnished. The questions started easy but the previous show we had to watch 3 times.
The name edger boy comes from last summer. He and his brother started playing with the edger. Sounds pretty dangerous but it wasn't. It was unplugged and I was near by. They spent all of an hour taking turns hand feeding stickers thru it by turning the flat belt pulleys on the feed.
The little one keeps asking to make sawdust. I was milling on Sunday and I look past the carrage and the 4 year old is under the sawdust blower dancing around with an umbrella. If I only had a camera with me. Boy was his ma mad he had sawdust everwhere.
Here is Edger Boy and his brother last year.

I don't know of anyone more deserving. Thanks for sharing your story JSNH. Enjoy your prizes Edger Boy. I bet dad is as proud about it as you are. :)
I don't even have access to the show, except taped copies, and I don't feel slighted in the least. ;)
Congratulations Edger Boy 8)

Grading the next couple weeks is going to be time consuming. Is it just me, or does it look like there is still two more episodes?
Yep, Last night was a recap and then two more and it's over. :( That gives me a coupla chances to get lucky. :) That is if I can answer all the questions.

Thanks Stump Branch and all the other prize contributors. :) :) :) :)
And way to go Furby. :) I hadn't even considered you a serious threat at this point. ;D
This last week has been a tough one around here. I almost didn't get contest answers posted. As it is, I think I got them in just under the wire. ::) I've been sicker than a dog the last 8 days with a really bad cold. Then this past Thursday the wife's father passed away and she had to go out of town for that. I stayed home. Along with being sick, our son s home on leave until Tuesday and we have the grand kids here until Tuesday as well. To top all this off the air conditioning went out Friday. :( It' currently (
at 7 PM) 91° inside with the windows open.
Anyway, enough of the excuses. I went nuts trying to figure out Darrel's nick name. I even sent an email to Gustafson Logging. :D I didn't get an answer. ::) I gave up and guessed on the beer can question. ??? And I have absolutely no clue on what the last question even means. :-\ :-\ :-\
QuoteQuestion 30: "Contact Operator Channel what?"
Channel 27
If it's from one of the in-between commercials like the Valspar question earlier in the contest, it's different from what I see because I have satellite TV here.
I was also thrown because of the bloopers History channel aired. Like question 18. An early episode identified Chris
Hand as 'Sparky'. I spend hours trying to figure out who the heck Chris Warn was.
Anyway..... Thanks again to all the sponsors, contributors and competitors.
And due to a posting delay because bad weather took out my satellite internet while typing, I now see that additional prizes have been added. 8) 8) 8) 8)

Good job there DR_Buck.I missed one week of questions when I was on vacation. Not that it would of mattered much in you winning.Have fun with your prizes. ;D
Question 30: "Contact Operator Channel what?"
Channel 27
Answer is in episode 8 on a roadside logging operations sign :) (Furby got it right ;))
That was a pretty close game. What a blast. That was alot of fun. I did come in 3rd , but 3rd place is second loser.Great game guys. Thanks to Jeff & Tammy , Logrite , And espacially Stumpbranch logging. Looking forward to next season if they have one.

CONGRATULATIONS Dr. Buck
sorta like when looking for something at home you just saw a few days ago,
and can`t remember where. Several questions I knew I`d seen the answer
for but could not find. some turned up the second or third time thru the tape
right where i`d been looking. I took some guesses also.
Jeff great questions, must have been fun finding them.
Congratulations to everyone else TOooooo.

Just finished a nice phone conversation with Melvin from Stump Branch logging. What a nice guy. After watching the entire season (many times :D) I felt like I knew him . He did a great job of making me feel comfortable during the conversation. The Melvin on the phone was just like the Melvin on Ax Men. He's the real deal.
I asked a lot of questions about the filming, his crew, his "2nd hand equipment" and he was patient and very detailed in his answers and explanations. One of the things I asked about was the History Channel's "creative editing" that provided a lot of extra drama. He pointed out that it's not as bad as it appears on TV. And as far as his 2nd hand equipment, the two break-downs on the series have been the only real equipment problems he's had this year. He does have one of the youngest crews around. He said the average logger age was 50.
Another question I asked is what made him agree to do the series. His response was so that he could show that loggers were not as bad as some make them out to be and that they aren't a bunch of spotted owl killers and they really do care about the environment. Not only was answer sincere, it was also passionate. It was easy to tell he really loves his job. He even mentioned on an up coming job, the harvest has to be scheduled around some birds hatching season.
They had the same camera crew the entire season and they "clicked" with his crew. After the 1st week of filming, they began to know what was going on, and where to be for filming and such. They had very little impact on the logging production and Melvin was able to meet daily load goals most days. According to Melvin they are currently in negotiation for season 2 and he wants to have the same filming/camera crew. Season 2 could possibly be the same 4 crews and possibly a couple more as well.
Of course I had to ask about "fishing for logs" or jammer logging. My question was, after warming up and getting into the swing of it, just how accurate was he in placing the chokers to where he wanted them to land.? The reason I ask was I got thinking that to be efficient and cost effective, he would have to get close most every time or he would never make daily load counts. Well his answer surprised me. At distances of 200 - 300 feet he can drop it into a 2 ft target area. :o :o And as far as production efficiency, I think I remember him saying that they averaged 8 loads a day and have even pulled as many as 11 in a day.
It was a pleasure to talk with him. Both the wife and I can't wait till next season for more Ax Men and Melvin and his great crew. As I said at the beginning..... Melvin's the real deal. :)
Foot note: I did drop a line about a Pig Roast in Harrison Michigan August 2nd. ;D
I feel like I won this contest now. After all the Sunday evenings sitting on the couch with pen and paper to create questions for the contest I didnt know that I would get a share of the grand prize. Melvin called me unexpectedly tonight as well and we talked for quite some time. Like Dave says, Melvin is the real deal and one of us. He called to thank us for having the contest and helping where we could. We talked about some other cool things and some possible projects that will have to be revealed at a later date. 8) 8)
Dave and Jeff,
Thank you for your kind words about Melvin. As you both pointed out he is the real deal. Tonight he is having dinner with me and my family and just hanging out. Right now he is on the deck with my husband watching the kids ride motorcycles.
He had a nice time talking to you both, and can't believe the support. We are all looking forward to another season of Ax Men. We'll be back for season 2 and another contest!
Thanks again,

I'm looking forward to seeing some reruns because I missed the last 2 weeks.
