Title: radios in the woods - VHF best?
Post by: Hobnob2 on March 08, 2008, 01:21:06 PM
Happy March, everyone.
I'm looking for better two-way radios.  Those consumer/public grade two-way radios that are supposed to have a range of 5 or 15 or 20 miles don't seem to handle hills and forest well at all.
I've read that VHF radios are better in the woods.  I need a pair of handheld units or a handheld/base station combo that will be clear and reliable across two hundred acres of very dense and hilly forest.  Anybody got some recommendations?
Thanks, HN2

Well, I can say I have been underwhelmed by CBs, it is easier to just shout and it carries further sometimes across an open field. 6 mile range in space maybe.

I had thought about marine VHF sets for my truck, but, it is actually against the law as far as I can tell.  West Marine has a nice selection if you go that way.

I had toyed with a big ant. on the truck to use it as a CB base.  Basically, I gave up since I did not have a cheap solution that actually works hand to hand unit.
