i've noticed lots of big tree pics througout the forum, was wondering whether anyone would want to start a thread on live burls..the ones still attached to trees? They're always good conversation starters..large or small..pica are a must
I recently posted a picture of this guy on a woodworking website when we got talking about Burls. Its not the biggest on here I am sure, but at 18 inches in diameter, its the biggest one I have. Granted its hard to see with all the snow on this Black Cherry.

Here are a few, most were alive when photographed ;D, the big oak was dead. The slabs were from urban salvage continously burled Carolina Cherry (tree from L.A.) , the maple was from local source (34" x 11' long, 5500 l lbs).

Here is one from Maine that had been harvested. I called the logger twice to try and buy and he never returned my calls so it must of been sold.

Here is a 45 inch white elm with a burl on the side. It died after the woods were cut and is just about all plant food now. Amazing how fast stuff rots in the woods.

I should have known........ ::) ::) ::)
I think one a them Yooper burls ya gave me is gonna be in an auction at some point. That is if Tammy is gonna give it up :D :D :D
Is it time to fire off an auction? :)
Reid, did those burls appear in a woodworking magazine in the past ??? The boards look familiar, and after hearing the "continuously burled Carolina cherry" from Cali., I'm pretty sure I've seen them before. Just curious....
Yeah, your right, the Cali. stuff was in Fine Woodworking (I dont have the issue in front of me, but it's been 6-8 years ago). Just found it, issue no. 154 page 26. Boy ws that a "crap shoot", it worked out but I normally don't take that $ much risk. It could have been scrappy wood (Light pithy, like say sumac) but it was good stuff. Great memory.
Ironwood
That's funny, cuz my short term memory kinda stinks :D I only have about six issues of Fine Woodworking out of the hundreds of woodworking mags that I have (I really need to get a subscription). I look through those six issues quite a bit...
Anybody can have a big burl, but you have to have a loader and a truck to haul it around. But not many have a burl like this one I have.

You can see the other end of the massive trunk sticking out the top.
I am pretty sure its a maple but you would never guess where I found it. ;D ;D
On a maple tree? ;D ;D
What are you going to make out of that? ;D
Beenthere, you seem to be stuck on ice, your back tires are spinning, but not the front. :D

I saw that Dave, and I might need a free replacement....how did it happen? I didn't break it, honest I didn't....I just ran it into a tree....or two...
When you 'sold' me on this green painted thingy, I thought it would be perfect in every way....
;D ;D ;D
Even the Green ones break down. ;) :D Only DanG tractor smiley on the WWW, or at least only one I can find. :-\

On a maple tree? ;D ;D
Nope, it was already off the tree when I found it. It was stuck between two hoses way up on top of the loader boom of the forwarder.
Beenthere,
Doesn't that make your chin hurt to keep pounding it on the fender of that green tractor? Beter get a red one, chainsaw too. :D :D
<---Found one. :D Sorry for the derail, Turningfool.
Dave
could hte small one simply be a gall? Ironwood

Zach and a beech burl behind our house. You can see the green roof in the background. Beech burls aren't very common around here. This is the only one I've seen actually :) :)

Pretty nice sugar maple burl 8) 8) ;) :)
What is a burl and why does it form? Is the tree fighting some foreign body? Is it something like gall in a grapevine?
I believe this is some sort of maple, not sure.

Yeah, "Brad_bb" ask earlier a question that I was wondering also.
Does anyone really know what is the cause of them??? I have seen them all my life but never really knew what caused them to grow and develope.
Ok, THE easy answer first, insect, injury or disease. The scientist cannot make it occur in a lab (that I know of) and it is a sprial growth much like a tumor, or cancer.
Ironwood
The one in thedeeredude's pics looks like a lead that died and broke off years ago.
OK, what causes a burl to form anyway? Is it a imperfection in the tree, a scar from a wound, bug, what? :P

From what I have heard over the years...All of the above ;) ;)
THEDEERDUDE,
That maple looks like REALLY high quality pin knot (the best kind), but from the setting in the backround of hte photo it looks like it would be missed by someone.
Ironwood
Reid,
Its not easily seen from the road that goes through there and I doubt anyone would know what it is anyway. If that tree ever comes down I'll have my hands on it pronto.
Aaron
Here's how you get that last burl. Chop it out with a saw, it's almost completely outside the normal shape of the bole anyway, then cover with a sprinkle of dirt and some old leaves. No one will ever notice. :D
Dave
I have showed this picture before, but I am posting to keep updated on the thread. These burls had their own burls.

The fella that owned these spruce didn't care about the burls he just wanted them into lumber, talked him out of it.
