Welcome to the forum Taylor.  If you ever run out of trees to skid with those horses just bring them on up north. We still have lots of trees up here. ;D

Welcome to the Forum, Taylor. My Grandaddy logged with mules  when he got started logging. By the time I came along he had stepped up to gas powered equipment. Sure hate I missed that era.

Yes,
The Norwegian Fjord is usually a buck skin colored horse with a black strip down the middle of his mane some time they even have some striping on there legs . When you cut the mane like it is suppose to be cut it looks like a mo hawk . As far as going up north to cut trees well that might be something I want to do any way ( I don't have enough horses to cut all the trees here right now I would need at least 2 more  ;D  ;) ) . Just think by the time you got this far north the snow may even be gone.  ;D  We got some interesting terrain on our farm where the only way to justify removing some of the timber would be to skid out with horses.  On the 160 acres we have I know of atleast a dozen springs.  There's no possible way to get even the smallest of a tractor in there without getting stuck.  The last time we even tried the one area it was late fall on a dry year and we were stuck more than not. We just gave up and thankfully we never had a bunch of timber cut ahead of time.

My s-i-l and her husband are into Belgians and I have been trying to convince them to do some skidding for me.  They don't seem to have the time right now especially with the oil boom moving in from Alberta.  I have helped Randy do some haying with the horses in the past just to keep them in shape. I like to see them earn their keep. :)

Gads! That is too funny!

If I won the lottery, I'd probably buy all new logging and milling equipment, and keep using it until I went broke again!

There is no doubt about it!

Well as they claim the oil boom is moving to Saskatchewan as we have alot of oil and gas resources.  Our new government has opened it up to allow more exploration and drilling to be done.  Although there currently is drilling going on in southern Saskatchewan and has been for quite a few years it is nothing compared to what will take place in the next three or so years.  The government released their new budget this past week and have put $240 million dollars into the roads alone for this year.  I am not sure what they have been spending on roads prior to now but I do know that they never put anywhere near that in 5 years.  Finally we should get some decent roads.
There has been alot of exploration done in the past few years in our area (east central Saskatchewan) but not to the extent that is to come.  Last summer there was about a half a dozen oil rigs drilling in a few areas to do alot of the preliminary testing and such.  They obviously found the results they were looking for.  Saskatchewan is also home to a future tar sands project north of the town of Hudson Bay some 60 or 80 miles.  They have logged of a huge area in the past few years for the site and a pipeline.  They had loggers on each end working towards each other.  From what I hear they logged a path of a mile or so wide the entire distance and have benn building a road as they logged.
Needless to say this area is about to change drastically. Most of the land prices have nearly doubled in the last year alone.  I know of some land that was advertised at $40,000 for a 160 acre parcel two years ago, it sold this past summer for $120,000.  The land is only good for pasture and such until the oil companies want to drill on it.
