Title: Hockey night in ... Motor City !!!!
Post by: isawlogs on May 14, 2008, 01:21:08 PM
Seeing as some do not like it when a thread goes off to far , I am gonna start this one for the playoffs !!!!

"Quote from another thread "

Marcel, I was flipping around this a.m. during coffee and watched a little Mike and Mike on ESPN. They brought up the "every 33 years" things.

They were doing their morning predections for all the games (all sports) and Greeny made the prediction that the Stars would make a comeback. I think he is just wanting to look like a genius if it happens. I wish it would but I doubt it. I don't know who the Leafs did it against in 42, or who the Islanders did it against in 75, but I guarantee it was not a team as potent as the 2008 Detroit Redwings. It just ain't happening.
However, he DID bring up something I wasn't aware of . . . the Panguns are up on the Flyers 3-0!   yetserday when I mentioned the 33 year thing I was thinking the Flyers had won a home game. YOUR series has a MUCH better chance of fulfilling the 33 year rule. The Flyers have 3 times a better chance of beating the Panguns than the Stars do of coming back on the Redwings.

Oh .. I get to watch both of the games , one is on every night ...  8)  Those Red Wings are on fire , there gonna be hard to stop by your Stars , gonna take the Pingouins to do that  ;D ( but would much rather have the stars in the finals I think they hit less and are a tad bit slower then the wings  ;D

And how do you think that the Flyers are gonna do that ???  There defense is all broke up . There penalty killing is well killing them , even when they have a man advantage they are struglling , They do though have one hell of a goally , I would take him on my team anytime . He has kept them in the game more then once.

Roxie, when i was looking for the Pitt/Philly shcedule i ran across an article that said they last met in the 99 playoffs. Not that far back. You may remember, that is the year the Dallas Stars won the Stanley Cup.

I thought they met also in 2001 ... Might not have been in the semi finals though ... Oh did I mention that I am hooting for the Pingouins  :) :) 8) 8)

Go pingouins go

      ;D ;D

It sure would be nice if the regular broadcast channels would play the games!  I am soooo frustrated by not being able to watch pro-hockey.  :(

Although a couple of months ago, I did get to see my very first professional sporting event.  And it got to be hockey.  Watching the Ducks take on the Avalanche.  It was a pretty awesome game.  Ducks won it on a shoot-out at the end.

As for who my household is rooting for, for this years Stanley cup, it has to be the Redwings.  Sorry but the Mrs was born in MI and has lotsa family there.  :)

The Wings looked sluggish, could not convert power plays including a five on three. The Stars are going to have to tighten up and stay out of the penalty box if they expect to continue. Detroit is normally too good.

Marcel, the Stars penatly killing is usually among the league's best and often leads the the league.

Sometimes they act human though and look like the Flyers of last year. Hey man you have to hand it to those Flyers. Any team in any sport that goes from the WORST to the playoffs ther next year, that ain't disgraceful!

My prediction for tonight though:

Pangs 5 (at least one goal will be an empy netter)
Flies 2
::)

Sorry Roxie those Tuxedo Men are gonna be on fire tonight and want to end this thing to get some rest before advancing to the finals to face the  ................

DALLAS    STARS !

The great 33 year comeback of 2008!!!!

Marcel, Marcel....poor, out-of-touch-with-reality, french guy.  The Flyers are the strongest when they come from behind.  Pulling it out in the clutch is what they do best.  They've spent years, and years, and years, perfecting the APPEARANCE of losing, only to suddenly pounce upon an over-confident prey.

We shall see tonight.   8)

Yes it was!!   8) 8)

Sunday's game is going to be real interesting since the Pingouins haven't lost a game at home for 15 straight games.

Can the comeback kids stay in the playoffs?

Note to TexasTimbers:  The empty net goal was a daring prediction.  You saw the goal alright, but it belonged to the orange guys!

Sometimes being wrong sure feels good! I have a tendency to pull for the underdogs. Plus it's always better for hockey if the series are competitive. Glad they won!

Now, predictions for Saturday from y'all . . . how bad will the Wings decimate my men in Green? :D

I was listening to some Dee-Troit sports talk yesterday while I was working in the shop. I could not find anything more than a couple of casual refernces to the Wings! All they are talking is Pistons. And get this, there was more time devoted to the TIGERS than the Wings. ::)

I can tell you that all of the local sports guys here are predicting the Wings will finish it Saturday. Common sense really. Turco, for some reason, loses part of his motor skills in JL Arena. He just plain sux in Detroit. I think he is from there too!

The local theory is that since he SO bad, and predictably so, that the team can't play up to their level because they feel going in they don't have a chance. Wonder why. He has never won a game there.

There is no question who has the most talent. The Wings are one of the better teams we've seen in a while. All things being equal, on paper they look unbeatable right now. But that isn't how sports competitions always work, and IMO especially in hockey. If it did work that way there would never be upsets.

If the Stars can find that spark like they finally found again in game 4, they have a chance. If we could find that Jeff Galooley guy what did that little trick to that Kerry Jernigan skater in the Olympics, and whack 'ol Osgood's knee right smart, we might have a fighting chance. ;D

So my prediction? I predict that Don Cherry (wow! can that guy dress or what!?  :o ) is right. He says both Dallas and Philly could win another but that Philly has a better shot at upsetting the Panguns than does the Stars with the Hot Wings. Of course anyone who watches hockey even casually knows that plays the odds correctly, and I predict . . . . he is right.

The Stars won because they did not want to get humiliated at home by getting swept. I know I predicted up top that we would upset them but of course now it is getting closer to game time and the fact is I see no chance for them - based on Turco's past play at JL Arena.  I WANT then to win and wish I could WILL then to win, but my friends it just ain't happening. All I am hoping for at this point is that they at least fight likhell and compete, and don't go down shamefully.

I hope that even if Turco stinks to high heaven that the M&Ms (Morrow, Modano)  and Zubov (one of the best pucksters on both sides of the line in all of  hockey!) and all those younger guys led by Richards and Rebiero, Robidas and Norstrom (tough as a boot) will scrap for their lives and try and save this one for Marty. They sure owe it to him. He got them through two series they were supposed to lose and lose big against the Shark. Many "experts" predicted an outright sweep by the Sharks.

But now we see who is playing the best in the month of May and it is the Dee-Troit Hotwings. If we can stay within a goal or even two by the 3rd, we have a chance. If we get 3 goals behind - even in the first - might as well call Dandy Don Meredith in and hand him the mic . . . .

"Turn out the liiiights . . . thuuu pardy's overrr . . .alllll good thiiiings must ennnnd . . . ."

Hate to end a post like that though, I have to say something positive for my team. In case you Yanks and Canucks don't keep up with the Western conf. (and I think you do not, I probably wouldn't if I grew up, up there in true hockeyland) the Sharks were widely picked to win it all this year. We man-handled them. But it was because of Marty in large part. Yes we did it without our best player in Zubov (thank God is he back for this series or it might already be over) and we had suprising consistent play from what was supposed to be our weak defensive 2nd and 3rd lines, but what got us through besides Marty having great games when he had to, was the whole team showed more determination and grit than all the alledged stronger, more talented lines they faced in both series. They played like it was 1999!

Y'all missed some of the best hockey in recent history in that 2nd round series. We have been blessed to have Daryl Reaugh as our color man for the last 12 years, whom you hockey fans know for sure, and he said it would be exteremely hard to imagine a better series or even Cup than what that series turned out to be. He said in the 4 OT game "I have seen alot of hockey in my day but this has to be one of the best, if not THE best I have seen in many, many years and for more reasons than 4 OTs!" We have not shown that yet against the Wings except game 4 of course. After game 1 I was outright disgusted for their Failure To Compete! They looked like the Bad News Bears on ice.

So now for that positive note I want to end my e-book on . . . if Turco has a great first period, if he gets the opportunity to make at least a few good saves, and makes them, and 1 or 2 inhuman stops, that may be enough to keep them in it. That's all I can hope for because if he collapses early (or at all) they are toast. Was that positive?

C'mon Roxie, pull for the Stars. If you do I will switch my allegiance to your Flyers. ;D Sorry, Marcel. ::)

Actually, I have been pulling for the Stars.   :)  I happened to watch the 4 OT game because I was also waiting for my beloved PBR (Professional Bull Riding) which followed the game.  Needless to say, I was up until 3:30 AM because the bulls didn't get started until 2:30 that night.

The sweat those guys on both teams were putting out that night would have made a fan of anyone.  I wished they could both be declared winners that night because they both deserved it.  But there is something about that "gravel in yer gut, spit in yer eye" that transcends skill only.  The Stars have that.  The Flyers have that.

Welcome to the fans of the Broad Street Bullies!

My boss is a jerk.

While the puck is dropping in Joe at 12:30 (my time) I will be out in lowlands dropping trees. Up until last night I was fully intending on taking the midday off to watch the game. Lord knows I want to see it. Bad. But while my wife and I were watching Axe Men last night I got sort of convicted.

Here those guys getting chainsaws stolen by jerks with no morals, and losing arms because they have immense pressure on them all the time to get the job done, and I am planning on taking off to watch the hockey game when I have people patiently waiting for back orders.

On top of that, my wife is working today, on a Saturday, giving life to peeps by filtering their blodd for them, and I am planning on sitting at home watching a hockey game. I don't think so.

I don't know if this is irony, alot of things are credited as irony that do not technically qualify, but a man in the Montreal area is one of my patient customers who's logs will be getting on the trailer today. He lives in, and was born and reared there, in the Mecca of hockey, and has the winningest hockey team in history right there and doesn't give a flip about hockey. But I will be missing the game to get him his wood. That's not irony. That's injustice.

So Roxie if you can watch the game, beginning in less than 3.5 hours, you have to cheer our (they are fully yours too for today!) Men in Green on double-hard because I will not even be near the radio in the truck to hear it. Maybe I will be lucky and get the trailer full in time to catch the 3rd period on the way back, but I doubt it. If it turns out to be one of those great games I will find a way to get a recording of it. If we get smeared then I will not regret my decision.

I wish I did not have my priorities so screwed up. Man. My boss is a jerk.

I'll quit whining now.  :'( :'( :'( :'(

Silver lining . . .I haven't left yet. Been trying to get my trailer brakes and lights working. Chief, our teething puppy didn't want me to miss the game so he chewed the wiring harness beneath the truck to shreds. i did not notice it until I had no brakes pulling out. I've patched it together but it keeps blowing fuses.

At this point in the day the only thing that makes sense is to listen to the game while I work in the shop. Darnit. ;D

Silver linings.

This is so awesome.  I hardly ever get to watch pro-hockey.  Both the stars and the wings are good!  This is amazing hockey.

PENALTY!!  Oh dude.  This guy got clocked!  Doh!  Wings got a bad call.  He touched the puck first!  Oh well... advantage Stars.  :(  Okay, enough posting, I gotta give this my undivided attention.

I came in to the TV right after the Stars scored. I didn't get to see it and they haven't played a replay of it. Saw the danged Wings score right after tho9ugh.

Listening to most of it the first radio at first though it sounds like the Stars are unaware that they are just supposed to go through the motions.

Man those Wings are deadly. We worked out butts of to get that goal and they come right back to score with such ease. So good so far though. Detroit is outhitting and out shooting us but we are tied.

Hang in there boys! Those Wings are human and you beat them once, and you can do it again!!!!!

(Thanks for sabotaging my wiring Warbird).

That's the kind of bad call than could cost us the game. We can't afford for the refs to be calling interference when it wasn't. If they scroe here that might be the deciding thing. Got to overcome that though . . . .

In game 4 they saved face and avoided embarassment. Today, they accomplished alot.
1) They showed they aren't playing just for pride, these guys are playing to win and now believe they can.
2) The momentum is all Dallas now. If they win 6 they will be coming back into JL with more confidence than they have had all year, and they have aready upset two teams that were more talented sp they weren't lacking in the confidence department to begin with.
3) And the biggest thing that happened today, especially if they win Monday night, is that Turco will not be facing the haunting spectre of "Oh at the Joe" for game 7. He shook that demon today once and for all, and game 7 will be bigger than the Thrilla in Manilla. Well at least to us hockey fans. It will be up for grabs then.

Hey Marcel, you might ought to start hoping the wings win this thing. Because if the Stars actually pull this comeback off, they're going to go through the Panguns or the Flyers like a buzz saw. ;D

Click your heels together and say We can win game 6. We can win game 6. We can win game 6. . . . . .

Roxie me and my lovely wife, a hockey fan herself, will be watching and cheering on our Broad Street Bullies tomorrow!

The only hockey game I have ever attended was a Dallas Stars/ San Jose Sharks playoff game in Dallas.  That was already about ten years ago. I got to play the National Anthem. horn_smiley  And boy was that place pumped up before the game.  Right before the anthem, they hustled me out of the little waiting room and tucked me under the bleachers to await the introduction.  Boy was I getting nervous. :D  But, the call came and everything went just fine. smiley_sweat_drop   They comped me great seats, too.  About 5 rowes up behind the goalie. 8)  Seeing the game in person is  a lot more exciting than watching on the tube.

We'll keep an eye out for you, TT. :D Pop_corn

Spinner that's a cool story I would like to hear a few details! How did you get picked for that?! ???

You played your trumpet (sax?) in the old reunion arena which was a good arena but the American Airlines Center is LOUD! I have been to activities in both and the ACC rocks.

I could not keep my secret from my wife. ::) I was too excited. PArt of the fun is getting psyched up for the game and I did not want to rob her of that. ;)

If they win tomorrow, and the Flyers win today, I am going to start believing in a Stars -  Flyers final. 8)

QuoteHow did you get picked for that?!

I sent in a CD of me playing the National Anthem.  It was that simple.  Of course, I used the K.I.S.S. method (Keep It Simple Stupid). And that is what set me apart from everyone else.  Ever since Whitney Houston "did her thing" way back with the National Anthem, everyone felt they needed to put their own personal mark on it. ::)

BTW, you need to be careful with hockey, because you might need to play the "O Canada" as well. :D

Well, my hockey fan friends, we are heading out in a little while. I was assured by the front desk clerk at our hotel that we will have plenty of company in the short shuttle ride to and from the AAC tonight. And they will all be Redwing fans!  8)

We hope to be the only specks of green and black and white in a sea of red-clothed Mitcha-kinners.  Depepnding on the outcome of the game though, since the hotel is only a 15 minute walk from the AAC - we may not ride the shuttle back!

Hopefully we will be walking. That will mean we smeared them to the point we would not feel safe riding back with 12 anebriated, infuriated Wing fans looking to exact their revenge against a couple of Texans, even if it is about even odds.  :D

GO STARS! GO!!!!!!

I was looking at a cool website before we leave . . . . . .  http://www.whowins.com/home.html

And I didn't like the fact that Detroit has won 11 straight game 6 games. But I noticed something else that was encouraging. Of the two teams that were on the losing end of those historic losses, it was the Redwings that took that first 3 game lead in 1942 only to lose 4 straight, and it was the Pittsburg Panguns that fell prey to the Islanders in 1975!  Both the Panguns and the Wangs have experinece blowing a 3-0 lead so maybe that bodes well for us. ;D

Well it was a good run. I do not understand why our boys could not mentally prepare for the game but they just were not. I am not ashamaed though. They had a fine season, went much deeper in the playoffs than what anyone said they could, and were 2 wins shy of playing for the cup.

We had a great time - except for that one part where we, uh, lost the game - but it was a blast. We met some nice wings fans who were fun to be around - and they were really impressed with the way we do things here in Dallas between periods and with our arena. They were not as impressed at least last night, with the way we do things during the period. :D

When you get your butt kicked fair and square you can either whine about it or take your medicine like a man. The Detroit Redwings are clearly the best team to represent the WQestern Conference in our bid for the cup and they earned that right fair and square.

So, sorry Maurice and Roxie, I have to remain loyal to my Conference so I hereby wholeheartedly throw in my lot with the Dee_Troit Redwings. Scoot over Wings fans and make room for another cheerleader.

Prediction:

I predict Marcel is going to pretend he forgot about this fun little thread - until (if) the wingless birds win one. ;D

MArcel try and remember this simple precept of bird fighting. When one species of bird does battle with another species of bird, the bird that can fly the best usually wins. The Redwings have, well, "wings". They are red.

The panguns have nice little tuxedo's (perfect to attend funerals etc. like for instance the death of an Eastern Conference Champion after a 4 game sweep) but it is well established Panguns can't fly.

So, that's why you see those guys in red dashing around the rink like they are flying at Mach II and those other ones, the ones with no wings, well they are running as fast as they can but flying is a much more efficient form of travel. Results? 4 pucks in the nest. :D

Hey, where is Roxie ??? ;D

I do not follow hockey enough now to know how these teams play, but the Flyers of old had an answer to that.  smiley_smash

Title: Re: Hockey night in ... Dallas Texas !!!!
Post by: Gary_C on May 25, 2008, 03:11:25 PM
The year after the Flyers won the Stanley Cup, the Soviet hockey team came to the US for a tour and played a number of the best NHL teams in exhibitions and beat them all as that was an all star team that could really skate. Their last exhibition game was against the defending champs, the Flyers in the old Spectrum on Broad Street in Philly.

The Flyers coach, Fred Shero, had a simple game plan. The Flyers defensemen were told that if anyone tried to skate across their blue line with the puck, to knock them down. It did not take long in the first period for Ed Van Impe, a Flyers defenseman to flatten one of those high flying Soviet forwards. And you can probably imagine the roar that went up in the whole country.

So the Soviets left the ice and went back to their dressing rooms and their coach refused to play any more with those "ruffians." The general manager of the Flyers went into the Soviets dressing room and convinced them to come back on the ice and finish the game. Afterwards, when asked how he got them to come back and play, the GM said he used an old capitalistic trick. He told them if they did not play, they would not get paid.  ;D

Needless to say the Flyers won easily after that incident as the Soviets were skating very tentatively after that. And Ed Van Impe became a very well known hero for that check which he said was really not all that rough.  ;D

And I got to hear this story directly from Ed who I met some years later. But he was still a hero.   8)

I think it was the mid 1970's. Back in those days, the "Broad Street Bullies" had a player whose last name was Schultz and was called "The Hammer" because he only knew how to skate forward and when he wanted to stop he just ran into someone.  :D

My wife ask me a few years ago when we were watching the Stars getting hammered (on the scoreboard) by the Sharks I think it was . . . . "Why do they fight in hockey and it is okay?"

I just said  "It's not 'okay' it's a 5 minute major penalty for the but it's part of the game honey. Just like there is the shooting the puck and skating on the ice, there is fighting in hockey. " :D

I didn't know what else to say?

Compared to a shot in the mouth with a puck, a fist is rather minor. :D

I love these tough Football guys. A deceny hit, and they are out for 2-3 games ???

One night I watched a Hockey player take a puck in the mouth, took 55 stitches, and returned to the game, a few teeth less. Where's my 1-tooth brush ???  Now, THAT's TOUGH.  8) 8)

Watched most parts of most games.

Thought Fleury should have gotten the Conn Smythe Award. Never see a Goalie get it, even though they play the whole game, every game.  ::) ::)

Penguins DID deserve the Cup.  8) 8)

They did.  Can't believe how many super close shots the Wings had that just didn't go in, though.  That one off the cross bar was a nail biter.

Well, I am not really a sports guy, but from what I saw on the news the Guin's did a real nice job. We checked on the iternet near the end of the game to see them ahead (no cable) and knew t was over when gun shots and 4" professional fireworks started going off in the area  :o Luckily it didn't wake the little ones. Folks around here sure are over the top for the sports thing, it is good for the Burgh and all but people get pretty "cranked" up for it all. I once ran into two 75+ year old bubuska wearing "bubbas" (grannies) as they are called in hunky lingo (I can say that I am 1/2 hunky) talking about getting excited about out to Steeler training camp :D. Great to see them all jazzed up about something, I'll never forget overhearing that conversation ;) Western Pa. is quite something ::)

I turned on CBS morning show this morning, and I thought they were just downright disrespectful of Pittsburgh. The story was "Detroit loses the Stanley Cup" Not Pittsburgh wins. They didnt even say the word Pittsburgh or Penguins until late in the story. Granted, the reporter professed to be from Detroit, and the story was about how bad it was in Detroit and how much the Michigan people needed the win, well, lah-tee-da. Give credit where credit is due. Pittsburgh has had its share of rough times to.  I'm a wings fan, but I'd rather saw an upbeat story on the win, rather then a downer on a loss.

We had a birthday party here today for my son . I heard "know the Pirates will be letting us down if they dont take the World Series ::)"

Take no prisoners and except nothing but excellence I guess ???. I suppose this kinda thing could go on Anywhere, USA. Just funny to hear it/ see it first hand.

I don't remember in my whole life seeing the 3 big networks in the US ever air an NHL hockey game. Not their game, so they ain't gonna air it.  I mean I'm right next door to Maine, one of the coldest states in the union.

Well Jeff, Pittsburgh is owning the ice tonight at home base. 4 goals before the Wilds got their first. Crosby is back after 28 game absence with torn muscle injury. He has no goals yet tonight.

I'm not big into it. I just watch a couple games here and there and now I get them live internet stream, so can pick and choose what I want to see that night. 7-3 for Penguins tonight was final score, Crosby scored 2. He's our man, since he's a Maritimer from N.S. ;)

My daughter has played hockey in Crosby's home town rink a few times (Coal Harbour NS) unfortunately the magic hasn't rubbed off. :D

We do have a local guy born and raised here in the NHL.
Ryan Graves plays defence for the Colorado Avalanche.
