Title: Bookcase project....with pics
Post by: Osric on August 09, 2008, 03:03:19 PM
Thought I'd post a couple pics of a bookcase I finished.  This was made from red oak and most of the boards were so crooked or knotty that I didn't think I'd be able to use them for anything. Thanks to some creative cutting and gluing, I think I managed to do OK.

The design is just a basic Shaker box with shelves.  I added a decorative molding to the top that I've had laying around for 15 years.

The only money I put into it was the plywood back and the brass shelving rails, so about $35-$40 total.  Sad part is that it really didn't relieve our book overpopulation problem.  I need to make a few more of these to even make a dent in organizing our books  :D

I like it! :) I, too, have a book problem, I think they are breeding on the shelves of something. I have 4 bookcases in my bedroom, and 4 in the office. My nightstand is a bookshelf, and there are stacks of books on the floors. :D

I'm currently working on a similiar bookcase, made out of oak also.

I used a red oak stain to even out the inconsistencies in the boards and then 3 coats of high gloss polyurethane.

I have never tried stain. I like a natural wood look myself, although I do like to use amber shelac on red oak. Poly and shelac are about all I use.
