I've always admired some old farm buildings in our area that were constructed with cordwood walls. I was wondering if any body has ever tried this method of construction. I've read a few books on the subject, I would like to try a building of some kind with this method just for the expierience,...burlman...

That has always interested me, as well, but I doubt if it would hold up too well in our heat and humidity. Get yourself a sack of mortar mix and a pile of firewood, and go for it. Looks like a good method for a smokehouse or wood shed.

I'm in line with you smwwoody! I have read about houses made from straw, rammed earth, adobe, pop cans, old tires, even old 727's on a pillar that rotates in the wind, 8) and ect. but this actually sounds good to me. I guess the biggest problem will be the building codes. May have to find a place a little farther from town.

I'm getting ready to move to the township where my mill is located. it is a small back woods twp that is in the process of being taken over by some pencil pushing city folk who are retireing here. they are pushing real hard for all the city codes. it is time too run for twp supervisor. my family has lived in this twp for over 150 years and now it is time to stand up for what we have built!!!!!!!
Do it right........Go gett'em! Those big city folks that ruined their place move to get away from the mess they created and then think they need to tell you how to "do it right".
Tell'em all about "when in Rome" and then tell'em the road goes out as well as in. Some of those guys need to be Green Carded and kept track of. :D
Well It seems that in Sept I will be cutting out a frame and rasing it for a cordwood home. They want to put it up green so the timbers will shrink around the cordwood and keep the joints tight. I tried to explain what would happen but they know more then me. It is their coin and I will do it their way since I have said my bit.
Rob Roy seems to have done this and looked into and learned a bit about it. He has a good book and gives some good advice.
Also I am now peeling logs for a tire wall home that will be the perlins. I will have to get back over there and see how the tire packing is going. :o

I wonder if the DNR will get after the tire home guy for improper disposal of used tires. :D
Would you belive that they had to go to the State and get a Tire Dump Site and a tax deal for this. It is all above board and legal. But they think that the termites will not go up through the dirt and tires to get to the pine perlins. ;D They do not know termites very well. Only 70 more logs to saw and peel.

I sawed some nice oak for a gal that had a cordwood home. She was redoing the walls cause the cordwood shrank and left gaps between the wood and the mortar. Other than that the house looked nice.

Well the tire packing is going slow and it looks like they will not be in the dry before winter. The perlins are going to be ready.
I seen in Country Side mag that a guy built a cob/cordwood chicken house. I hope them chickens like termites. But there are still a few of them buildings around after 100 years.
