Title: Lake States Logging Congress
Post by: Corley5 on July 30, 2003, 08:39:34 PM
If all goes as planned I'll be at the Lake States Logging at the U.P. State Fairgrounds in Escanaba on Friday Sept. 5.  Anybody else going?

That's my plan. Friday and probably Saturday although I have no idea where I'll sleep. Probably have to tent it some where as all the rooms anywhere up there have been booked for months I hear.

I booked a room today in Manistique at the Holiday Inn Express. It's a little farther than I would like but was the best I could do.

I'm planning to get there about noon on Friday and then leave Saturday afternoon.

Okiemac

You can camp right on the grounds of the UP State Fairgrounds where the event is held.  I have a spot reserved, just call the UP Fairgrounds direct 906-786-4011 and they will give you the information.

Jeff,

Do you have guard dogs?

Anyway stop by the camper I would love to meet you or any of the FF members that may be at the show.  I will have my ton flatbed, which has my name on the side pulling the camper  so you should be able to find me.

Is there any designated place where FF members will be stopping at to BS?

Looking forward to meeting all of you.

Does any body have logs that they would like sawn up for free, we could use some for demo-ing at the show.  If any one knows some one in the general area have them call Don Cadwell at mobile mfg co 1-877-272-9645, thats toll free! We've got the mill set up to cut boards up to 4" x 12"  and can cut up to 20' in length, and as little as 4' length.   Hard or soft wood I don't care, 2000 to 4000 BDF of scale would be great, I don't want to work to hard, we've got a 20+ hour drive to get to the show.  Every one is welcome to hang out at our site, I promise not to give the band saw people a hard time.  I'd like to show every one how the mill works.
Enough sawmill talk for now I'm heading over to Hawaii sunday, were I'm hooking up with Steve of Hawaiian Hardwoods, to check out what its like to saw that tropical hardwood.  I'll share some of the pictures in a week or so.

I should have my reservation stuff in the mail Monday from the U.P. State fairgrounds. I'm goona be a happy camper. Can't beat not having to leave and only 12 bucks a night. They say they have shower facilities so I can get by.

I am either going to tent it, or I have an idea in my head on how a little canvas, some plastic, velcro and zippers will turn the forestry forum truck and hard tano cover into a little camper. ;D

Are there any of yooz guys available to have Jeff's famous Kabasi soup at the Brokaw camp Friday evening? If enough are interested we will make it up and bring da pot and da stove.  :)

Mark, call the U.P. fairgrounds. I bet they do. The number is in one of the previous posts. If you call today there should be time to get the reservation thing in the mail. I will post a map of the fairgrounds they sent me after I get back from the mill today.

The soup offer sounds good! Wife Jan and I will be leaving in the morning for Iron River for the week until Friday. Then we'll be in Escanaba all day for the Expo and then be on our way home in the evening.

So it depends upon what time " the  soup's" on.

Soup can be when ever is good for everyone.

Here is the layout of the fairgrounds.

we have requested a spot in the Pocket Park Campground. I am guessing that will be closest to stuff. I know that the main buildings are right near there. The place is huge so I am sure there is camping somewhere.

Note: this picture is wider then allowed. :D

DA yooper customs officers must be holding Jeff at da bridge, cause he should have made it back by now.  ;D
Nope, no new forum members today, but dat don't mean they weren't there. We heard at one time we were only a couple of displays away from Kevin, but we never did spot him through the whole show. Dem Canadians sure can be elusive when they want to.  :D

Great weather and lots to see, looked for members of the gang but didn't see anyone other than the two gals.

Got home just before midnight Friday, leaving after "soup" with Jeff & all. It was great meeting more Forum members and the Woodmizer crew.

Now "catching up" some after the week in the UP.;  need to get the paperwork for a proposed timber sale out to the landowner for review, check some active logging jobs, and get ready to leave for 2-3 weeks to northern California, Lake Tahoe, to visit oldest daughter and family, and then to Montana to visit a son in Bozeman.

Sorry I missed you Ron. Was looking forward to a visit.  Guess I'll just have to track you down in your home county if I want to make that happen.

Tammy and I arrived in Escanaba around 9:00 A.M. Thursday. She dropped me off at Meadwestvaco and went on to da fairgrounds and set up camp. About 1:30 she picked me back up and we drove to Dagget, about 40 miles beyond Escanaba to pick up a log bed at mottocedar www.mottocedar.com and then returned to da fairgrounds around 3:30 where we met up with Dewwood almost immediately. Dewey was camped about 3 spots away from us.
Dewey's Rig
(https://forestryforum.com/images/04_01_03/dewwood_digs_at_logging_congress.jpg)

We also got to meet Shotgun briefly about that time. Shotgun came back later the next Day and Chet and I got a chance to have a great visit with him. Dewey Tammy and I then went in to Town for Supper. After returning to camp we visited a while longer then turned in. Tammy and I found the tent pretty comfortable. Her more then I. I got up 3 times and she slept all night so she never found out that the temp dropped into the upper 30s! In exchange for Supper the night before, Dewey fed me a great breakfast so Tammy could sleep in.

Chet and da Wax Lady showed up about 9:00 and Tammy and I met them near the Michigan Association of Timbermens tent...

We were right near the fence looking at the Baker boys. Couldn't have been closer to the equipment.

Wood-Mizer was on the opposite end. Kevin Corder and the whole Wood-Mizer crew stopped in Friday night for da weenie soup as did Sawmill John and Don of Mobile Dimension.

I got to saw for the first time on an MD mill! Only took a couple passes, but I can say I did it!

Kevin Corder told me that Wood-Mizer would have an LT300 set up and running at St. Louis MO. and I would be able to saw there. ;D
