We debark our logs before we saw them.  We're using a Mellott debarker and it is set in line with our mill.  We have also debarked some veneer logs for export.

Is he planning on debarking before sawing or is it some sales gimmick?

Depends.  Most of the mills I know do, especially down south.  The blades (either circle or band) last a lot longer and stay sharper longer.  Some mulch/etc and there mulch customers don't want bark.  Just depends.  I've got one mill that's got a huge Nichlson Ring Debarker.  This thing's awesome.  It literally zips through it.  He's feeding two scraggs and a circle mill, so he needs that thou.  Most run rosser heads, etc.
