Title: stihl 028 wb
Post by: rivermouth on April 22, 2009, 10:40:35 AM
I was given a stihl 028wb that would only run for seconds at a time.  The engine was flooding as gas was coming out the exhaust and running down the saw.  It has spark and a new plug.  I cleaned and rebuilt the carb (tilotson) and put on a new air filter (the carb was full of the fluff/flocking from the old filter).  Now it runs for several seconds but the plug remains dry.  Any ideas where to go next?  I'm thinking I have needle valve issues.

I had same problem.
Take the cover off the bottom of the carburetor and look for a small screen in the carb under the cover.  Screen is about 5/16" in diameter.
Mine was plugged and when I cleaned it my problem went away.  No more problems in last 3 years.

Be sure and let everyone know if this fixes your problem.  It will!!!!!!!    Jim

Brian, that 'stuff' you found was probably from the gas filter, as they'll fall apart after years of neglect. Unless you bought a new one, your probably without one now. Like Jim said, the carb more than likely needs to come apart to gat all that stuff out. You can't just blow it with an airhose and consider it cleaned.

I don't believe either one of those things will lead to that much fuel gettin' in to the crankcase...

Sounds to me like your metering lever might be set wrong during the rebuild, and the needle is too far away from the seat, and letting fuel pour in.

gary

it was pouring out gas prior to the rebuild and now it seems to be dry.  It will run for seconds at best.  The fuel filter seems to be newer but I guess I should replace it and the fuel line next.  Luckily I don't need to saw anything till the fall.

An often over looked cause for running lean or not pumping fuel is the hole that goes from the crankcase to the pump side of the carb gets pluged up with gunk so you end up with not enough pulse to properly pump fuel.

I misread your first post, and thought the saw was still flooding out on you.

If no fuel... then yes check that little screen in the carb.  A carb rebuild will do no good if you run the same crappy filter and fuel line.  Replace those and you might be suprised...  :)
