Title: Value of a used kiln?
Post by: Engineer on July 31, 2009, 11:17:53 AM
I'm looking at a Northland kiln, 3000 bf max capacity, uses 110v electric power.  It's pretty well used and slightly abused, it's probably too big for what I need but I have been thinking about offering kiln services to the local area for hobbyists who want small quantities dried.  Any idea what a kiln such as this would be worth on the used market or at auction?  I think it sold for $15k new, at least according to the current owner.

I know nothing about that brand, but given you can sometimes get/ find a used Nyle in the same board footage range for $2000 (or there abouts) I would not get too crazy given your description of the unit. Have you tried Googleing the brand and model for comparision? At that "new" price was it a Vaccum kiln?, or is he just pulling your leg? Maybe that included the structure?, which usually w/ a new Nyle or Ebac, you build yourself.

Personally, I would look for a Nyle, and if it needed a "building", find an old ice box truck body.
