What do we do as in our full time jobs??? Or is this question for the guys that work in the woods full time???

Well for me my job is very fullfillin....Know when ya drive down the road and ya see that bum sitting on the corner with the tin cup selling pens??? Well that's me :D :D :D
See that Lexus across the street from me??? Well that's mine as my welfare checks pay for that 8) :D :D
The money that I get pan handling buys me beer and smokes and crab legs for dinner :D :D :D

K I'm gonna stop now before I fall off my chair ;)

I retired a year and a half ago after 33 1/2 years with IBM Corp and now I enjoy taking logs, cutting them into bowl blanks and turning them into bowls or other woodturned objects. It's fun taking something that might be destined for firewood and making something that just might become a keepsake. :)

I am but a simple forester, working my way through life, planting trees, cutting trees, doing theft investigation, estate division, etc.  On the side, I build furniture and refinish the old stuff that comes my way.  Still working the woods.  I also practice the fine art of the raconteur, when the sun is down and the scotch is up.  But then, most forestrs are gentle philosophers at heart. ;D

Retired and live on a 45 acre tree farm growing pine trees.  Own a custom sawing business too.  www.tomssaw.com

It's a shame more members don't have complete profiles. You could get a lot of information about their life from that too.

It is a growing cycle, we plant one thousand for every hundred we cut.  Often, we selective cut, remove only some of the mature pines, and leave the rest to grow, but some folks are into plantation growth.  I'm in the south, Texas, and we supply alot of fiber to the US, and structual materials, when we are not out done by the foreign inports.  15 to 20 years minumum in the cycle, so I plant for the next generations, as do most foresters.  We are the origianl environmentalist, I have slept under beech trees in Germany that were well over 150 years old, and at the time had another 50 to 100 years to go in their cycle, a lond dead foresters ghost probably kept me up those nights trying to explain his managment plan, or it could have been the moment.

Janel ok I get it now :)

K I own a small construction company and I really enjoy what I do, it's fun and I like being my own boss :) I (sometimes) like my customers but sometimes the stress of it all takes it's toll ::)
I've always wanted a mill since I saw a WM in action at a wood show in Powell River 8) It took me 3 years of research till I bought a mill but I'm glad that I got one as when I'm alone with it and I can't hear the fones ring :) There's something about being alone with a mill and a log that can't be put into words. When I'm at the mill I feel alive and the whole world disappears and I get intune with my inner dimensions of my soul and my mind :) I feel happy and content and that's makes me feel like a human again.
I enjoy the people that drop off logs and I like how they will just stand there quietly and watch in aww as their log is being cut up, I think it takes them away to a different world aswell for that brief fleeting moment and that sticks with them well after the boards are loaded into the truck.
We also have a very large shop and you saw the boat that we have nearly completed. We make wooden pens and also make them out of deer antlers. My dad who lives on the same property makes bowls and all sorts of other stuff and I'm gonna post some pics of his stuff as it's very unique.
As I believe in protecting the environment nothing from the mill goes to waste, everything is sold or used for sellable projects. What can't be used goes into the woodstove as that's the only source of heat that I have.

Janel, just a part timer sawyer, my paying job has got me desk bound and FF helps me make thru the shift.  As far as more cutting, in the PNW more trees die and rot than are milled, not counting fire.  Have you every seen a sawmill town die?  2 commercial mills within 10 miles of my front door are gone due to the Spotted Owl, they used to run 3 shifts.  I look out my kitchen window at thousands of BFT dying due to Bark Beetle, USFS is having are hard time finding bidders.  These trees have made our (and I mean all US taxpayers) forest a timebomb, if not addressed now they will burn.  That's how I got into this game, I cut the trees and mill on site.  I'm busier than I want to be.  BTW I think your chip trailers are cool.  BWW

Janel,

Its a little after 5 oclock in the Morning and I am on my way out the door to do what I have done since I was a teen ager. Go to the sawmill and saw lumber. I'll come back and make a post after the sawmill hours and post what my other job is. I learned a while back not to try to write to much in the morning as up mixed gets everything. :)

Janel -

I am a third grade teacher. I'm not directly involved with forestry, but I've done some interesting projects with my students through the years.

I just happen to like trees and wood and the people who like the same things I do, so that is why I hang around here.

What do you do?

I don't know what problems you had with the phoo albums on  my site but it might be real simple.  You have to click on two things.  the first is on  the stump to get tho the picture page.  the second is the link in the upper right that opens the album software.  Then you  can pick an album.

www.tomssaw.com

How do you keep the side doors shut on the dumps to hold the load?

Tom,

The links are broken for me, also. Your computer may be showing the albums from memory, I would guess.

Post by: Tom on September 15, 2003, 09:20:51 AM
:DNo, I don't think so. :D  He's a fixin' to get his leathers dirty.

I always felt comfortable with the power screwed on and tire hanging out if the bike was fairly upright.  When it heels over so that you see the rear tire out of the corner of eye trying to pass you then my foot comes out. :D   I even developed a style, for awhile, where I stood on my left foot and was off of the bike.  It felt real good but I realized one day that I could be in real trouble if my foot caught on something like a rut.  It wouldn't take much.  I put my feet back on the pegs again.

Have you ever ridden behind a big thumper?  I was on a TR6 one day in Griffin Georgia  and couldn't pass a brand-new Matchless 600 thumper.  Everytime that thing fired it threw clay and rocks in my face. I could actually feel the engine pulses I think.  Man that hurt.   I put my front wheel inside of his back wheel to get out of the rooster tail and just hoped he would do something wrong.so I could get by.  He didn't.  From then on, I tried to beat the big thumpers to the first turn.

One of my favorites is MC001 which is on page ten now.  Yep, he recovered.

Yeah, I've eaten some dirt. Looking at the pictures reminded me that we used to race wearing tee shirts! geez!I looked at MC001 and didn't think it possible that he recovered. I thought he was too far off center. We used to race in strip mines and reclaimation. Sometimes, I'd go over the top with my butt above my head but I would USUALLY land on the seat.

Janel,
As I'm 16 years old I'm still in school (grade 12). Although i don't really have a job i've worked 2 summers in a carpentry shop and am starting a Coop placement at a welding shop on the 22nd. My envolvement with forestry started almost as soon as i could walk. My dad always took me out to our 200 acre woodlot and i've always found the woods to be a great place. For the past 2 or 3 years (in my spare time) I have been working with my Atv to cut down and skid small hardwood trees (maple + birch) and sell it as firewood. the first season i got 1 cord, not bad considering i used a bow saw. the next year my best friend brought out his dad's craftsman chainsaw and we got 3 cord and split the profit. this year I used my dads Johnsered saw and got 3 cord by myself. Once my dad retires we plan to start selectively cutting and managing the wood lot with a mid size 4x4 tractor.
Thats all i have for now.

I studied forestry in college but came home to manage the family farm and timberland.  We raise tobacco, cotton, and some wheat, soybeans, and corn.  I also look after some of the family's rental property.  I try to do as much of the forest management as possible by myself, such as controlled burning and spraying, but leave the logging to the loggers.

As far as I can remember I've been  makin sawdust somehow.
Raised on a farm, learned from my father and grandfather what to and or not to do with trees ,which one to cut and why and how to get the max $ out of them . Got me a sawmill and added some value to these trees in the process. Younger we used horses to get the wood out ,I was not very good with them, that I left to my brother he seamed to be able to get those horses to do anything and have fun doing it I felled the trees he pulled them , then we got a skidder ... I pulled and he fell the trees ....Sawdust has been in our family for many generations and hope it will be for a long time to come

Janel, you are terrifc.  You hve been more out of some of us than Ol' Jeff has in quite some time.  Way to go!

 For me:

I am a retired educator of 7th graders.  I tought in a core type program of Social Studies (Western Civ), English and Literature for 30 years in the same community, Dallas, Oregon.
I have been dealing with the lumber and timber industry all of my life.  My father had been in the retail lumber business for 40 plus years. I reckon I come by some of this from that direction.

I married a wonderful lady 24 years ago that had a 70 acre timber farm.  Yeow Wow!

I manage the Tree Farm and have two Mobile Dimension Sawmills and one very large head rig.  I do a great deal of custome sawing for people all up and down the Willamette Valley, here in Western Oregon.

Along with all of this I am a Master Woodlands Manager, some one that assists other Tree Farm owners with their trees and mangement, thereof.  I do all of this kind of thing free gratis.

When I am not doing any of the above I am usually seeing to it that kids get a fair shake in our schools, via my position on a three county regional school board for the last 27 or so years.  I also belong to a couple fraternal organizations that help children who may have physical malaties and need assistance as well as another that sees to it that children who may have speech handicaps are identified early on in life and have those needs corrected at no cost.

Yep some of us here have very full plates and can't hardly find the table to set at in order to eat. ;D

In addition I also have a number of students that are loggers.  I have 3 major outfits that I try and keep jobs going for them.  All of that part is done for free as they are still my students.  If you have any additional questions feel free to ask away.

In the past I was in various aspects of agricultural education.  For the past 20 years I have dairy farmed and for the past 10 or 12 we have logged and milled timber off of our farm.  We sell grade lumber, ties, pallet stock,  and pine construction lumber.  We live in Ozark Co Mo.

Right now I don't have any pictures from inside the house.  My scanner is broken and I need to get a new one.  When I do, I will post some.  That porch sure is nice to sit and rest on.  I have a good friend from another town who all his life wanted a porch so he could sit and drink coffee during rain showers.  He never got it, so when I sit on mine I think of him and count my blessings.  Hope to get him to visit during a rain sometime. :)

I thought their was a place somewhere here for advertising what we do, but darn if I can find it now.   Heres a link to my company website.  http://www.rcbassociatesllc.com/Advisors/rcbassociatesllc/

I am the "B" in RCB.  I do consulting on company retirement plans, help sell and install them, do financial consulting for retirement on individuals who work for the companies, savings plans, investments, general stuff that has to do with saving or sometimes spending money.
What I really "do" is work hard and leave early, get to the woods with one of my favorite chainsaws, and make noise and chips!  Unfortunately that does not pay quite as well as my day job, so I have to keep doing that.  Actually I have a great time at work and enjoy almost all of my clients.  The ones I don't, I kindly ask them to find someone else they would rather work with.  thankfully that doen't happen too often.

Hi Janel and everyone.

I manage the oil and coolant analysis lab for the Caterpillar dealer in ND & SD. During the day I sit on my behind and stare into a computer or microscope and talk on the telephone. My most recent training is in chemistry/biology/environmental science although I started out as a heavy equipment mechanic. I did that for about 15 years then went into exile for about 10 years. During that time we moved back to Minnesota to spend time with my folks until their time was up and I spent another 6 years going to school to learn some new skills that landed me my present job with the same company I started with back in '74. Today I am equally comfortable running an electron microscope or a D9 Cat Dozer.

I grew up in the forests of northern Minnesota about 8 miles from the Canadian border. Worked in the woods a little when I was a lot younger and spent a summer working at a sawmill. I really missed the trees-woods-sawdust living out here on the prairie so I decided to buy a sawmill and make a little dust. I found I could get trees from the dump or the tree service guys so I have had no shortage of logs. We don't have the fine hardwoods out here so I can't be too fussy but I do have a lot of fun. About 2 weeks ago Cindy (my wife of 28 years) and I bought "da turdy room house" and since we didn't want to go broke we decided to heat it with wood. Now we'll be able to saw and split and stack and to do all them fun things we used to do in Minnesota. We will probably be spending all our time and money for the next 15 years fixing it up as a bed & breakfast when we retire.

This winter I am going to build a big skating rink in the side yard like I used to do in Minnesota.

You can see the da house and da sawmill and some of my pictures at http://www.pbase.com/mmathys

Mark,

Thirty or more long years ago, we considered oil analysis. We built a system that controlled the scan of an SEM with a computer and did analysis of particle size and shape. We would stop the scan to do X-ray analysis on particles. We worked with Kevex, I think they were called. I suppose that this technology that we couldn't get off the ground is what flies today. Is that what you do? I think that Cat looked at our system but that was a lifetime or two ago. There was four of us in the beginning. We called the company LeMont Scientific. Ever hear of us?

Hi Janel,

I am a CPA by profession working at Indiana University where I am involved in strategic planning for a group of auxiliary services (residence halls, bookstores, student union, auditorium, parking, bus, motor pool, etc.).  I also do some financial work for a small printing corporation.  My wife and I own a 100 acre woodlot that we manage for timber and wildlife.  I am in the process of building a barn to house my WM and Nyles kiln.  The goal is to add value to the timber removed during the ongoing timber stand improvement and hopefully recoup the cost of managing the woodlot and make a little profit while doing the things I truly enjoy.  I have had many jobs during my life but I have always managed to do something to keep in contact with nature.  I hope to become a good enough sawyer to work the mill full time when I retire from the university.

I am currently a Ph.D. student in ecology at Purdue University.  I have been a consulting forester, climbing arborist, trailworker, restoration supervisor, and probably a few other things I'm not remembering right now.

Nature is my faith and is the only thing that keeps me sane (relatively).

That name sounds familiar but I've only been around SEM for 6 years. Our instrument is old (uses 8" floppies for the EDAX) but the new ones are pretty neat. They will analyze a sample and give a printout showing the chemical makeup of all particles.

Mark,

That is interesting. Twenty or thirty years ago, EDAX was Kevex's competition.

If your SEM uses 8" floppies, it must be more than an SEM. What brand is it? Does it have a separate 19" rack with various electronics including the 8" floppy drives? Two drives side by side by any chance?

HI Den

The Edax is separate, here is a picture. The SEM is an ISI-SS40.

Mark,

Thanks for the picture. Your ISI is the right age and a LeMont Scientific Image Analysis System would have fit in the picture perfectly. I had to look at the spectrometer closely. We put a small system in the same size, 19" rack and ours was painted black, also.
That really would have been nice to find a system still running. Thanks for taking the time.

My great grandfather ran what they call an up and down saw powerd by steam. My grandfather and my dad were dairy farmers and always wanted a mill to make lumber for the farm. When I got out of school Dad and I bought a old sawmill I fixed it up for our own use but never intended to do what I do today. That was 23yrs ago I have a better mill now and can saw as much as 10,000 feet in a day. As well as log and manage our farm. I watch everyone else around commute to work and am just thankful that i'm my own boss. Wouldn't want it any other way life on a farm is great. :) 8)

Janel,
The ongoing saga and pics of my saw barn and milling efforts can be found in the thread 'Time to stop being a wannabe' in the Sawmills and Milling section.

Perhaps someone who knows how to make a link directly to it would be so kind as to post it here.  Mebbe even tell us again how it is done? ???

Link to Wannabe thread (https://forestryforum.com/cgi-bin/board/YaBB.pl?board=sawmill;action=display;num=1029859839;start=)

Here is how to make the link, OnewithWood  If you click on Modify you can see how it looks.  Url, address and title with beginning and ending tags. :)

Or you can copy and paste the address into the psot like I've done below   It's not as fancy but it works.

Hey, thanks to that masked man who did this for me!

Well I had the land and the trees available, and was too cheap to pay someone to build a house for me, so I talked my dad into helping buy a sawmill, (I was going to get the ground version) we bought a Timber Harvester fully hydraulic, my brother had to move and I knew what he owed on his house so I got a really good deal!!! long story short I dont need to build a house now, might anyway, but we saw for whatever we want to, I am thinking of cutting Arkansas cedar for siding on my house now.....BTW I do communications work for a living.
