I am wondering, is there enough interest for Tammy and I to start planning a Forestry forum type get together for this next summer here in Michigan at our home? We have had a lot of practice lately roasting pigs so thats what we would do.
If our plans don't change, I will take my wife to visit her mother in Milwaukee next summer. I was thinking about taking that big boat across to your area while they visit. If you set a date and it will work for my wife, I'll be there.
There's plenty of interest here. :) Actually getting there is the big challenge. I'll sure give it a try if y'all put something together. 8) 8)
Jeff if i know ahead i will try to make it. Haven't been that
far North.
,Sawwood 8)
Like DanG said, getting there will be the challenge...perhaps some other forum members from PA would carpool :)
Getting to michigan is no challenge. Heck, I did it.
I'm In!!!!!
And I know, mostly, how to get there!
I would make the drive again. Yummm, roast pig.
Will we be having any drag saw contests? ;D
The whitepe's will make it if we can.
Count me in, but I'll still have to check with da wax lady. :-/ She's still a little pithed at me for da great roast piggy trade I made with Tammy at logging congress. :D
O.K., we have interest. Lets set a date. That way we can plan far ahead of everything else. ;D
I am open to anytime from mid june to mid August.
We are ok with any time except the last full weekend of July. Our fire department will be hosting the U.P. Firefighters Tournament that week and weekend.
That's it then, the party will start in mid june and run until mid August. ;D
I'll start building up some comp. time for the long haul 8)
The first week in August works best for me but I would come up anytime. This time I will pack the trunk with some beverages.
I'd like to come, but I'd need some time off in July for a family vaction trip. Should I bring my mill. I might need some income between mid-june and the middle of August. :D
Howze about July 4 weekend? We could even stick a candle up the porker's butt fer Bibbyman's birfday. ;D ElectricAl could blow up a few logs to help the celebration along, too.
I and my Sweetie are seriously thinkin' about a "new" ::) motorhome, and we ain't had a vacation trip to that part of the world yet. The election will be getting closer, too, so gas prices oughta be down a bit. :-/
I like the idea of july 4th weekend too. Only have to take one day of vacation to make it a 4 day weekend. If not then, just say when and the Loveley Miss, the Road King and I will try and make it. We will even be happy to chip in for da blue beers and spicy jerky!
WS
Mid July on would work best for me. I'm haying from mid June until then. The last full weekend in July is taken for me too as that's when the tractor show in Walloon is. The third weekend in August is the Buckley show.
I think I could make it, except for last week of july. Be glad to pitch in for some of the vittles.
Sheryl and I were in Frankenmuth yesterday. Guess we should have driven a while longer and said hi!
Hope to meet some folks from the forum at PB show next sat.
Tom
Second weekend in July is my show...but don't let that hold ya back...get togethers are great...will there be any hotsaws playing??? hehe....
Corley...you said Buckley.,..did you get to see the Predator this year???
Oh- my-- word- I was reading this in the NUMBEST frame of mind :P and somehow missed the small part about *NEXT* year. Where I've been so criminally busy and-er- not on the forum that often recently I somehow thought this thread was about THIS year until I saw a post marked 'today' and mentioning 'july'- so then the lightbulb flickered on the the whine and grind of a generator that don't really want to run.
*next* year ;D. We don't have our vacations posted but I sure would like to make it. Town meeting is in early June, the Intermediate course should let out around May or June, and the State Nurse Liaison meeting is in May. Those all may or may not matter.. so July or after would work best for me I guess. All I can say is- do it, do it!!! lw
Tammy and I have been mulling this over and its down to either the first or second weekend in August. Votes?
First weekend. If ya keep puttin it off everyone will always have an excuse. 'Sides that, if the Lord comes back the before the second weekend then I won't get to meet some of you fine folks, lessen of course you go where I am going.(https://forestryforum.com/smile/angel.gif)
p.s. I don't really know if I could make it or not, but would sure be willing to try no matter when.
Either one'll work...just hope I can make the haul.
Start planning now. ;D Put away a quarter a day till then and you got gas money.
AUGUST 7th
I'm puttin it on my calander... as soon as I get a 2004 calander that is. ;)
Jeff after yer last trip, I suppose a weenie roast is out of the question. ;D
You got one. Somebody put it on the FF calendar. ;D
I'd have to show up on Friday.
Who else from PA is going? Maybe I only have to save a quarter every two or three days :D
I hope we can talk Ron W into coming. We will have to bring sand in and shellfish to do it though. Thats his Vacation time to the sea. Maybe if we promise him crabs.
Nah, that aint right.
:D
Yeah he's got a smaller truck...prob-ly gets much better gas mileage ;D
Don't forget! We are planning already are you?
AUGUST 7th 2004
pre-piggy fest evening of the 6th. We will be baby sitting da porker.
It's on the calendar. 8)
OH BOY! Roast piggy. 8) 8)
I'm not tradin' nottin this time though, last time I got into to much trouble. :o
august 5th 2004 is my 40th birthday , have been past Jeff B"s exit 8 or 10 times in the last year , I would love to be there for the pig roast and bring my fiance who lives just a few hours south of Jeff. I drive it non-stop every time so put me on the pig eatin list ! this travel guide is a neat area, 1st time I checked it out ! 600 miles to st.ignace turn right ,cross my favorite bridge and head south a few hours ! yee-haw ! ;D
Buck, DanG it, quit blowin by my exit and stop and visit.
Kevin told me one time in a private message that he had just been down to Alma Michigan to visit a relative. I sent him a private message that said he had passed within 200 yards of my house. He sent a message back that simply said. "Twice"
Smart Ass.
I would like to try to make it
ohsoloco me and my wife may not have room to car pool but we may be able to travle together
Hey Jeff, how long of a drive was it from your place to Elec. Als?
Norm it took us 9 hours. But that includes stopping off for gas station polish sausages. :D
The way I looked at it was I traded a day at work to get to Al's which I'd do anytime. We left at the time I usally leave for work, and we got to Al and Lindas at the Time I usually go home from work. Cool trade off if ya ask me. Other then dozsehot doggies.
i hear its a skip away can wife and kids go . how many posts do i need :) :)
Sure they can come Stump_jumper. If ya showed up without them we'd send ya home after them. :D
Hopefully we will get to meet before then, yer not far away at all.
I won't have any kids so feel free to bring extras.
Kevin is the Kid.
We have a pool, so if I know yer bringing the kids I'll put some water in it. ;D
Really, this is going to be for the whole family. There might be a brewski here and there for the adults that enjoy but that should not present any problems.
QuoteWe have a pool
I have a water dog.
If you put rubber booties on all 4 of his feet, shave him, and teach him to play marco polo he can get in the pool.
He's up for the first two but he wants to know what marco polo is?
Its an insane kids pool game that will assuredly drive adults crazy if they listen to it over 5 minutes.
No, he wouldn't like that game.
He likes to bob for waterfowl, if you have that game.
Nine hours isn't too bad of a drive. I assume it's really only seven since you had to stop at every rest area between the river and Al's place. :D
Our kids are moved out (YEAH!) I mean I sure miss em but my log dog loves to ride in the back of my pick-up. Guess I should leave em at home. He does ok at 55mph but choking on a bug at 75mph might not be good for him. He'd really rather ride up front sitting between Patty and me giving me slobbering kisses. Makes her jealous. :D
JUST NOTICED 257 DAYS UNTIL THE FORESTRY FORUM PIG ROAST! HOW LONG HAS THAT BEEN THERE?
Well Stumpy, the sign just showed up today, the pig roast still isn't here, and the plans have been laid for a month or two. I guess that about covers it, huh? ;D :D :)
Pregunta, Gonna be any logs in that pool ::) ;D Uhhhhhhhh, knowin Kevin, I probably shouldn't have axed that. ::) ::)
Just talked to the boss she said we can go, looking forward to putting faces to the posts that i'v been reading. See yal 8/07/04
Hot DanG Pasbuild, a 'nuther yooper at dat dar picnic. If I can talk JeffS into taggin' along, plus bring Da Wax Lady, heck dem folks down under dat dar bridge won't know what hit um. :D
Hey Florida gang! I just had a inspired thought.( I get those at this time of mornin' ::) )
Maybe my darlin' could borrow one of the busses from the retirement home where she works, and we could all ride up together. After seeing us together at Moultrie, we'd look right at home in that thing. 'Course, Ed and Crosscut would have to wear nurse uniforms so they wouldn't look out of place. :D :D
:D :D :D :D :D :D DanG, yer tooooo much. :D :D :D :D :D :D
Maybe Tom's "Dozer Driver" would donate the "Burban". HEY TOM. ;D ;D ;D :D :D :D
8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8/7/04 it is! We're looking forward to it. Barring another family tragedy :( :( :( like the the one that kept us from last years picnic we'll be there
Greg, ya goona drive a tractor down? ;)
Ya want me to ??? ???
What if I haul one down, unload it at the end of the street and drive it in from there? ;D ;) :)
I think we will need name tags so i can tell whos who :D :D ;)
That's a good idea S_J 8)
I'll provide the paint. ;D
Im partial to WM orange. :D :) :D :) :D :) :D :) :D :) :D :) :D ;D 8)
Well, we'll have to have some blue and red there too.
I'm not into painting; it ranks right in dar wit dat # 2 backhoe. But because I'm a nice guy, I'll volunteer ta paint everybody's names on dem. :D
Jeff,
Is there Motor home parking near by? How far are you from Hartwick Pines State park? If I come up, I would be in our motor home and would need some place to stay overnight. Then I would have to go over to Big Rapids (my home town) and visit my son who is was head maintenance at Paris Sawmill. He now is the band blade sharpener.
Dave
There are lots of places to stay. We have a state park right here in Harrison on Bud lake, there are some motor parks and I have a little space for parking overnight. We are about 45 minutes South of Hartwick Pines.
Jeff, are there any sponsor donations to the picnic?? Have you asked?
Captain
Nope, have not asked. As things get closer and if I see a need, I'll be calling around. :) Really, if you guys are willing to spend the bucks on travel, I should be able to buy the food. If it gets bigger then I can handle I'll find some help. :)
I meant "we". DanG, I could get thumped if'n I aint careful.
Jeff, I kin brang tha pig, if you gots a air compressor to skin him with. ;D
8) ok, where is it i'd like to come .. :P
Just southeast of ya a bit. Two halves, a state and a lake away. :D :D
Its right here (http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?country=US&addtohistory=&address=3210+Bischoff&city=Harrison&state=mi&zipcode=48625&homesubmit=Get+Map)
Not to far away from that
BIG SPORTING GOODS STORE
that we like to go to once in a while. 8) 8) 8)
Jeff and Delcy
Yes, Jays is only about 10 minutes away.
Oh great......I just about had Patty talked into the time off but if she sees this BIG SPORTING GOODS STORE just ten minutes away I'm in trouble. And I was gonna bring a pig too but him and the log dog (Cole) always fight over who gets to slobber all over the side of my pickup. Of course we can't leave the belgian for any lenght of time so she'll have to come. Without the dog and horse to keep the varmits away the chickens will have to come too. You do have a barn don't ya.
No, I aint got a barn but what the heck, we'll just get a bigger grill. ;D
Whoa! :o Stop the train and back it up, boys! I'm ok with eatin' the pig, and the chickens (although they may be a bit on the tough side, seemin since they are old layin' hens), I have a little trouble with you eatin' the cat & log dog, but I gotta put my foot down on eatin' my fat horse! They just don't make grills that big. And besides that, she will be a new mom by then, I plan to send out announcements when the big day comes. This is our first baby belgian, we plan to call it "BB" for "baby becky" or "baby belgian" whichever you prefer. :)
I thought I was safe here as Patty doesn't read this section. I guess she must of seen my name and thought to see what I was up to. Good part was see was so pre-occupied about us barbqueing her horse that the BIG SPORTINGS GOODS STORE just ten minutes away slipped right through. That was a close one. :D
Careful, Norm! You crawl much fudder out on dat limb, you gonna fall off the end. :o :D :D :D
;D ;D ;D ;D
Jeff
How do you cook that pig in the ground or in a roaster gas fired or wood fired? Do you season it during cooking or before cooking or after it is done? Just curious. How long do you cook the pig? ??? ??? ???
This should explain. Pictures and everything :)
https://forestryforum.com/cgi-bin/board/YaBB.pl?board=members;action=display;num=1055506812;start=0
Geez I gotta get back to my usual 2 hours a day on FF to catch up with all this fellowship time. Well if I can still score an invite I would be delighted to stop by. Jeff always throws a great party for my birthday. I imagine Traverse wineries are on our list of activities for that weekend as usual, so I will score a couple extra bottles for adult sippin like pleasure. We couldnt really break those out at the CCC camp last year. Look forward to meeting a few of the new names faces again. I think there are about 5 people within 30 minutes of me now.
just a thought how about bringing project photo albums ::)
Hey Jeff,
I just tried to check out the "pictures and everything" site you listed for info on the piggy roaster. I got an error that said I wasn't allowed .
Does that mean it's TOP SECRET and if you showed me, then you would have to kill me ????? ;D I'd like to see the pictures, but maybe the price is a little too steep.
VA-Sawyer
try again :)
:o now the horse ate the chickens :o i hope she dont like roasted pigy too :o ;D
Im think the AtLast's are overdue...would like to be able to make it...this time :)
Hey Jeff
What ya got for lodgeing around there. me and the wifey will be looking for a motel for friday and saturday night. it don't have to be no 5 star place just so they give ya new sheets and ya aren't shareing a bed with no critters
Woody
Good timing on the question. We are working on a list right now. :)
Could you check and see if any of em allow pets. ;D
horses or chickens?
Jeff, I don't think they have any chickens, but the horse is doin well.
;D
They are probably hoping to invest in some guinees while they are out and about ;)
If I get a truck in and it has a crate with guineas in it I'm sending it back cod. :D
The girls are back in town as they say, notice the fence. Not sure it's belgian proof, but should be dog proof.
Want me to bring a couple up for ya Jeff, nothing like fresh eggs for breakfast.
Why would you trade perfectly good cod for guinea hens? I'd much rather have the cod, maybe in a beer batter. You must really got a liken for them funny lookin chickens,
I'll be there ;D Am I going to be the kid? :D Least I can have some of that blue beer legally now! 8)
Drinking age in Michigan is 47 :o ;)
Jeff are you saying that I was contributing at da logging congress. :o
Well I still got some years to go to reach that age so I guess we will be hush hush and not tell! :D ;D :D
Northerners..... :D
Jeff,
Are ya gonna have a log in the pool for the log rollin contest!
Mizuz stump jumper
NO! :D No logs of any kind go in da pool.
:-/
No furbys in the pool either. >:( ;)
Ahhhhhhh.....................man!!!!!!! :-/
Okay about the log rolling in the pool stump jumper was quite relieved that he would not have to try killing himself. :D :D
But maybe on the other hand the kids can try to catch a greased watermelon. This will not cause any hariballs :D because you don't allow Furbys in the pool but it may cause greaseballs not sure :-/ It is like trying to catch a greased pig. Slippering little buggers. :D :D :D :D :D
mizuz stump jumper
??? ???now I think Jeff has a new Drag Saw coming for the Drag Saw Contest. Buick V8? see if can get it to Jeff. trying.... Duh---Duane ;)
Where can I find the details about the pig roast on Aug. 7? I'm thinking of making the trip up there.
Within this thread so far, I will try to have something more this week. We are going to request RSVP so we can plan on food and things. There is a list of places to stay in a previous post.

Hi Jeff,
If you're referring to this link you posted on Jan 12,
https://forestryforum.com/cgi-bin/board/YaBB.pl?board=members;action=display;num=1055506812;start=0
I could not access it. I read through all the posts in this thread. Maybe I missed it.
Here it is! I thought it was in this thread but I was wrong. Agin. :D
https://forestryforum.com/cgi-bin/board/YaBB.pl?board=poll_archive;action=display;num=1081156619;start=all#2
Thanks for the link Jeff.
One more thing...it's August 7th, right? If so, what time?
If I drive up that day, it's at least an 8 hr. drive for me (plus the time change), so if it's over at noon, I probably won't come.
I figure anytime from friday evening to sunday evening. Several of us will be here visiting and cooking da pig friday, and most of us should still be here Saturday night into sunday.. Plan on a campfire in the evening Saturday. :) NORM! DONT BRING IOWA HOT DOGS!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for the info Jeff.
Why....?
Are you allergic to em? ;D
Must be. :)
Jeff,
I put down 4 for the roast, cause you didn't have a 3 1/2. ;D Hannah is only 2 so she'll not eat a whole bunch... then again, I might make up for hers. :o
Lookin' forward to some downtime....
Ken
OK ... Can someone tell me what is required at the border , to be able to get over ... and taste some of that piggy ... Might be making plans ... I dont have no crimanol records so that part should help.... Have pick-up can travel Can read french really good, sometimes english if I dont drive to fast ;D
If ya coming to eat piggy, and won't even look at um,
yuck stuff, I don't think you'll have much trouble getting through. ;)
I'm pretty sure that all you need is a passport Marcel. Used to be all you needed was a valid drivers license but times have changed.
Norm...
I guess I'll have to look into that ... dont have one of those passport thingies, Might take a drive to the border and see about that ... its only an hour or so away..... worst thing they can do is send me home .... ;D
Last time I went through they required two forms of I.D., atleast one had to have a pic. That was right after 9/11 though.
Normally a birth certificate and a passport are considered interchangable. But I'm guessing you would still need a picture I.D. with the birth certificate.
Now I don't have a clue about you coming INTO the US. I don't think it would be any different, but ya never know. ::)
I do have alot of ID with my picture .. Driving license .. Medical card... firearms license card I wunder if that would do ... ???
I would think so, but you have lots of time so to be safe I would still ask if possible.
Someone posted a website for one of the border crossings or something along that line, some time back. I don't have a clue as to where it is myself, but maybe someone will see this and have a link for ya.
Marcel, you might IM Kevin. They seem to let him in every year so he must know all the tricks :D
Quote...Someone posted a website for one of the border crossings...maybe someone will see this and have a link for ya.
"Generally, Canadian Nationals must show ID but are exempt from passport and visa requirements. However presentation of a Canadian passport, birth certificate, Naturalization certificate or other supporting documentation will facilitate the inspection and is strongly encouraged."
http://www.customs.ustreas.gov/xp/cgov/travel/vacation/kbyg/documentary_req.xml
I think the documentation required is about 95% based on the person you are talking to. I crossed into the US at Fort Erie/Buffalo and all they did was ask what my citizenship was and where I was going, they didn't ask to see any documents. The meesus got a few more questions, probably based on her 'permanent suntan' ;) Coming back home we crossed the border at a different point and all the Cannuck authorities asked was again, citizenship and place of residence. They asked the meesus where she had been but not me.
When the nice lady asked if I had anything to declare I replied "I had a wonderful time." she just smiled and said "Welcome home." and waved us on.
BTW, I think the other 5% is whether their Preperation-H is working or not, they were taking apart a car when we drove past on the way south. :o
Murf .... you cracked me up I'm still laughing......
I'll try to see if Kevin can point me in the wright derection....
Thanks for the replys .... ;) ;)
Well I've had my car searched once,
inspected once,
been heavily questioned 3 or 4 times,
and the rest were mosly,
what ya going to be doing here?
how long ya staying?
and where ya going?
Getting back into the US was always easier then leaving. Except for the guy that didn't belive I had nothing to declare at 1am on a Sunday I think it was. I was crossing near the Winsor casino, and he seemed to think that was the ONLY reason someone would go over there, so they MUST have some $$$ to declare. Didn't belive I had simply crossed over to try and buy a fishing license. ;D
Driving license, and one other photo ID might be asked for.
You might want to check on health insurance, not a requirement but very costly if something happens.
Never had a problem either direction. But if you are traveling with children you had better have lots of paperwork.
I'll drive slow and keep my seatbelt on ....
Well, this is a timely revival of the Piggy Roast thread...we just past the 200 days mark! Only 199 days to go! 8)
