Title: 272 vs 372
Post by: ccoxva on October 21, 2009, 09:47:37 PM
Have a 272 that needs rebuild and was wondering if the 372 and the 272 had the same cyl and jug???Thinking about the big bore kit?

Nope, the 2xx series was from the 1980's I think. The 3xx series was introduced in the late 1990's. The 272 was replaced with the 371 which was a different/new motor. The 371 evolved into the 372.

I bought a 272xp in 1998 that I was told was the end of that production run.  There is a plate on the saw that puts the date of manufacturer as 1997.  I think the only thing that is the same between the two is the displacement.

From what I have been told the 372xp is a good saw, I like my old 272xp.

Sorry, my dates are off. But yes, the 372 is an excellent saw (I own 4). One of mine is a 371 and it was manufactured in 1997 also. Too bad they aren't available any more.
The Jonsered 2171 is the same saw wearing a different color.

The displacement isn't the same - the 272 is 72.2cc, and the 371/372 is 70.7cc (with a longer stroke and less diameter). Some late versions of the 372 is close to 75cc, but that's another story.

You are right - but the base for the 272 was the 162, introduced in 1976 or late 1975.

Btw, the 272xp still is made in Brazil - but it is a "detuned" version, on the power level of the 038 Mag2 (same bore and stroke as well)......... :)
