Title: hard maple vs. soft maple

ok, you guys need to help me settle an argument.
how do the two differ?
i say all the stuff is pretty hard.

The major difference I see is that the hard will show the white white color except for the heart wood while the soft will run slightly reddish or blue/red. It can be very hard to tell after the lumber sits around for awhile.

seems i forgot all about boxelder, its hard to even call that stuff maple.
