Title: Hammering a blade for rpm ??

Hi all

I am looking at a saw going to auction this week. I talked to the owner and he said the blade was hammered for 550 rpm. Does this sound right? Is there a way to tell what it was hammered for?

As far as I know there is no way of knowing what a saw is hammered for by looking at it. I suppose a saw doctor could get a close idea. 550 rpms is certainly in the range of circle saw rpms.

One thing to keep in mind, just because a saw is hammered for a certain rpm and ran well on one mill does not mean that it will automatically run at the same rpm on another mill that runs the same speed. There are a lot of other variables in there.

what kind of mill? Sounds like yer goona have some fun. :)

It is a Frick. If I am lucky I will get it.Then the fun begins.
specs
16' carrage
52" blade
totaly disasembled (not to bad)
track cut in halve (real bad)

For a 52 inch blade, 550rpm would be in the ball park for what it should be hammered for. The shops that do hammering have gages that they use for different rpm's and they could tell you what it had been hammered to.
