Title: deutz motor
Post by: treefarmer87 on February 20, 2010, 01:33:12 PM
the skidder im getting ready to buy has a 3 cyl deutz motor in it, how many horsepower  is it? im gonna be pulling large poplar logs with it  (20" and up) how many trees can be pulled and not strain the machine?

What kind of skidder is it? Never heard of one with a 3 cyl deutz. Must be pretty small. I guess it would depend on the terrain you are cutting. Relatively flat wouldn't be to much of a problem.

Learn from my dear old dad, he said: "Load it light, bind it tight, and RUN LIKE H-ELL !"

The C4 Twiggy isn't a power-house. It will not like over-loading.
With 20"+ Poplar, pulled tree-length, you'll want to run with 2 maybe 3, no more.
You're far ahead of the game to cut 2, take 2, saw up 2, and repeat vs trying to come out with half a truck load every hitch. You'll move more wood in a day without killing the baby twiggy.

my specs on the F4L912 shows 62 hp at 2500 rpm.
I am wondering tho if it is a misprint as all specs on the other deutz engines shows in KW not hp as the 912 series specs show

20 plus inch poplar on 67 hp , say two at most, you have to be moving to cool that motor and if you put in under slow heavy loads you will toast it. any motor when overstressed will run hot and especially an air cooled motor.

You don't have to be moving to cool it, it's fan cooled. While I do suppose it could be over-heated on a 120* day, I have never heard of any Deutz dying of heat related issues so long as they are regularly cleaned of sludge and cultch so the air can flow through the cooling fins.
Hauling too big a twitch will not hurt the engine, you'll just end up beating it trying to take more than it wants. Think engine mounts / clutch / axles / planetaries / U-joints.
Remember, it's better to make 2 extra hitches a day than it is to be not working and paying for parts.
Also, I never heard of a  Deutz 4 cyl in a C5...Usually 4 cyl. in a C4, 5 cyl. in a C5, 6 cyl. in a C6..what year is it?

its a 70s model i think it had a detriot before and somebody put the deutz in it along with the dodge transmission in. it it does not have a  leak anywhere on it except for a small one on the right front hub.

I have no idea how many logs you can pull.
I will say that the Deutz engines I have known were bullet proof.
I have 2 Duetz farm tractors, a 40 and 90 horse. I bale hay and bush hog in the hottest days of summer and have never had one try to over heat.

for what its worth I have a 3 cyl. duetz on my 1635d rayco stumpgrinder if there was ever a piece of equipment built that takes a beating its gotta be a stumpgrinder I have litterly run the crap out of it  with no problems ,keep it serviced and treat it with respect and it will do the same to you

i just put a deutz oil/air cooled f3l2011 in a bandmill last summer have not got to run it much yet but have not had any problems with it getting hot yet but it will shut down if it has no oil pressure or high oil tempeture

i have to agree with you on this one you will make more trips with small loads and less stress on equipment and the end of the day move just as much wood ... i seen guys hook up 4/5 big red oaks take them over a hour to make a trip, plus almost gutting the skidder. when they could have hooked up 2 logs and moved way more wood in the same time

I posted this in another tread it concerns the transmission

Quote from: mburrow
it's a 435 NP, my friends tree farmer C5 had a 1.5 in input with coarse splines, had to get a v6 (old) gmc clutch for it, 12 in I think. the replacement transmission is a regular dodge (bolt pattern) with a 1 3/8 shaft with fine splines.

746 watts = 1 HP  1 KW =1.34 HP
A C5 is a pretty good sized machine, should be able to drag 3 trees no problem.  I would defer to Twig Farmer on this, since a C5 is what he operates.
