Also I'd recommend taking a course.  I took a weekend course through the local college and it was well worth it.  It makes you buy all the safety equipment and having someone knowledgable watching you cut and correcting mistakes before they become habits is well worth the money.  You don't come out an expert but atleast you have some idea what your doing :)

Also they teach you how to properly sharpen a chain with files!   8)When your chain gets dull you file it, right away.  No finishing the day with a dull chain, then taking your chains in to be massacered by some kid on a bench grinder or the old timer that takes the rakers off as a "favour" for you.
