Title: Band resaw systems
Post by: Sawyerfortyish on June 11, 2010, 06:47:07 AM
Looking at a used timberharvester band resaw with the run around system. Anybody here using anything like this. We were told stay away from the wider bands there very expensive and require a lot of upkeep. So were looking for a resaw that uses a 2" band. there are a couple comming up at auction and a couple for sale online. Just wondering if anyone can give some insight. Our plan is to use the circle saw to square up the cants then kick em over to the resaw. We have a morgan resaw now and have out grown it. It's a good saw but it has no run around and were looking to up production and cut down on manual labor with a runaround system.

friend of mine has a baker resaw with return. his works real well. it uses a 1 1/4'' band the same size as his wm mill.i saw boards on the mill and end trim each one. he cuts cants to length and resaws boards. his is a little faster than my set up . pc

Early TH's were built by Brewco and re-branded. Later models were built by TH. I ran one one afternoon and it kicked out some lumber. Some of the units were more troublesome than others. I don't know enough about them to help you out much though.

Have a 2 head WM since 1992.  Probably has 22 to 24,000 hours on it.  Same track, motors and hyd pump.  We run mostly slabs for lumber recovery and sometimes cants we have stockpiled.  Uses 205" x 1 1/4" blades.  Get long life from them.  A few years ago 2 units with 4 heads each and runarounds went for about 10 or 12,000 bucks.  Cheap at that auction in Nebraska.  We used another brand at our mill in alabama and it was alright, but not as accurate .  They sure help with production

Know a circle mill that has a locally made 2" blade one off with a return system. One of the main things that surprised me was that the resaw man can turn the cants. I was told that the  resaw is where they make money and one of the reasons is that the resaw man can choose which face to take a board from. Previous to that I thought a resaw just cut the cant however it lay when it got there. Live and learn.

They make a rubber wheel that you can glue to the surface of that wider wheel, right at the crown so you can run a narrow band.We put one on a Poulsen double cut mill,it seemed to work very well, only one direction of course. But those 5" double cut bands are $400.00 before shipping all the way to fairbanks.I can get Lennex blades,1 1/4 right here in town for $26.00.Aksawyer

We had asked about wide band cost. We were told that they run 1000 bucks and after you get them sharpened they needed to be hammered and tensioned and can cost 4-500$$ just to have them worked. Thats why we want to stay with a 2" band they cost about 100.00

Well we kind of had the cart before the horse. We bought it then had to put an addition on the mill building. We put another 50' on the building then the town threw a monkey wrench into everything. They want us to upgrade all the electric in the whole building. That means tear out everything and put new in conduit and explosion proof lighting. So right now the resaw is under cover of the new building and it's just too cold to do any more. When it warms up in the spring will decide just how much we want the town to know and try to sidestep some of the BS.
