Does anyone know where I can go to find logging or milling collectables such as figurines or statues for office desk and such?...Ive searched Bailys and things of that sort but am not able to find what Im looking for. Im redoing my office ::)...ok ok...the place I sit and talk on the fourm ;D...new carpet, paint shelving, file cabinets but I need decorations!!!...so if any of you can help point me to a place that has such things Id me much oblidged. :-*
Sorry, I got enough competition if yer looking for old stuff. Someday stop by, I'll make ya jealous. ;D
oh suuuuuuuure Jeff....rub a guys nose in it...oh yeah....LOL.....I cant believe its so difficult to find this kind of stuff...maybe you need to off load some of ur stuuf....tell ya what...Ill be happy to " store" some for ya till you find a place to put it..... ;)
O.k> Chris, but I'll tell ya collecting is ADDICTIVE. Its the hunt. Finding something is primary over what it is you find. You gotta look everywhere. Antique stores, Junk shops, flea markets, Auctions, estate sales, on-line auctions, yard sales, everywhere!
I'd recommend as a cheap thing to start collecting in the way of logging would be wooden log trucks. Lots of guys out there making them from the simple to the complex. You can get them from 10 bucks on up. When you get into some of the metal ones you can talk big bucks. I've seen the real thing sell cheaper then the toy. Remember to one thing leads to the next. I found a dynamite crate marked for the logging industry one time and got me into collecting explosive crates white led to blasting cap tins and so on. We use the crates for furniture, tables and such.
Here are just a few of the things setting around here.

Cripes Jeff,
You got all that junk and you wouldn't even let Tammy buy that cute little school bus >:(
Yea, right. My collecting takes the back seat in the bus compared to hers. Don't let her kid ya. She has over 400 DIFFERENT buses.

And boxes and boxes in storage...
Ha Jeff, On the fifth picture down theres a little vise like thing you have their. I have one of those things too. Got any idea what it's used for.
EZ
Yea, I got a couple of them and I use them. they're saw vices for working on crosscut or rip saws. I clamp my dragsaw blades and two mans saws in them. Work very well. Pretty easy to find.
WOW!!!....some real nice stuff ya hav there Jeff. The statue of the logger holding the saw....WHERE"D YA GET IT!!!????...and the horse drawn logging sled...WHERE"D YA GET IT!!!????........ :o :o ??? :o :o ??? :o :o
The statue of the lumberjack is a whiskey decanter from Kontinental. He is pretty cool. We found him at an antigue shop in Lewiston for 8 bucks.
I did a google search for you and found this.
http://www.pickypackrat.com/figdecant.htm
The log sled was found on Ebay. I search diligently but have never found another. Mostly cause its really folk art. One of a kind. I always thought that someone could make some of this stuff and have a good market for it. Imagine wooden Logging tongs and crosscut saws.
Jeff, could you send me a pict of the circle saw in pict # 9. Is it a whole saw?
Ed K
Oh yea, its the whole 56 inches. I drew up the design on the 'puter and then had it cut with a plasma torch.
Jeff,
You ARE one multi talented man. That saw blade is wonderful. 8) Thanks for showing it to us.
Gus
Jeff,
V E R Y N I C E saw turned into a picture. Hope that that blade did not meet a bad end and leave some one injured.
D._Frederick,
Nope, it was retired from service because of a very large collar crack. Somewhere in All these threads there is something about it. A Gentleman named Dick Blue had it and was moving to Arizona and did not want to take it. He had worked at a lumber yard and when he retired he got the blade with all the other employees signatures on it.
Tom tried to get me to preserve it the way it was, but I figured if the names did not mean enough to the guy it was given to to keep it, then it sure didnt mean anything to me. So, I turnend it into some art! ;D
I got another stowed outside with a whole bunch of bent shoulders that I may have done too. I got that for free from a guy that included it with a chainsaw I bought.
WhenI first seen the blade I thought you painted the background white. :-[ Holy macaroni, what a wonderful job, Jeff. My wife says it is really beautiful and she thinks you should give it to her for Christmas. :D
EZ
An excellant choice Jeff.....and valid reasoning too...thanks for the link...I went on E-bay as well and type in " forestry"...and " logging" and even " Smokey The Bear"....I really liked yer Smoky Bar statues.....But icame accross some pretty cool stuff.....ended up bidding on a real simple item but liked the novilty of it....But I also saw a USFS Ranger die cast...pretty cool....Im keeping an eye on that 1.....thanks again for the help and ummmm offer still stands ya store summa dat stuff fer ya... ;D...by the way....you only paid 8 buck for that statue?....WOW...went to the link you sent and they want $60.......you REALLY scored on that 1 Jeff....8 bucks....ok ok...Ill give ya 12... ;)
I only buy wholesale. ;D
Its gotta be a deal or I dont buy. I passed on that decanter on ebay several times. Cheapest I ever saw one go was still over 50. When I saw it for 8 in lewiston I had an awful time keeping my poker face and trying to dicker it down to 6. No go, so I grugingly paid the 8. :-/ ;)
I have bought a few forestry books and things from Woodland Enterprises they are a mail order and have a store and museume in Moscow Idaho they will send you a free catalog and you can shop onlne at www.smokeybeargifts.com They have figurines and pewter sculptures and color Smokey Bear prints and all kinds of the stuff you are looking for.
Jeff, That is the koolest thing I've ever seen for use of a retired circle saw. My brother in law has two nailed to trees at the end of our rd to advertise. Guess they'll come up missing real soon ;D.
Rita says its gorgeous. spelling?
Ed
Jeff....I ordered those free poster sets......won a patch set on E-Bay...but still looking for Smokey Bear figurines ( which I meant to say thanks for the site post) and logging and or milling figurines.....so keep those sites coming guys I REALLY appreciate it. Gunna really do it up. By the way Last Chance Logs to Lumber will be featured in an up coming issue of a magizine. Ill posyt it after it prints. :)
O.K. AtLast, I figure you can take it now. Time for page two. ;D

I just found this, I gave $6 for it (a little high, a little high). I have not researched the date on it yet but maybe chetor Ron S has an idea. I have a feeling its from the mid 60s. It an unopened can of Kinsford Charcoal from Iron Mountain. It was packaged as a hunting product. Pop holes in it with a can opener and instant stove.
At the bottom it says "Only you can prevent forest Fires"

I've seen that Hunter Heater years back. It may be circa 1950's. Isn't there any date or pat. number on the can? Some great items you have there.
That hunting heater is like a barometer. That can is always popping as the pressure changes in the room.
Ron, it does say made in Iron Mountain Michigan!
Iron Mountain would like to think so, but I'll bet it was made in Kingsford. ;)
I agree on Kingsford as to where they were made. That was back when Kingsford was still a small part of Iron Mountain. The labels may have been made in Iron Mountain.
check for zip code #. 1963 and newer will have one, older will not.
We know its older then that. Probably 40's
Got a problem. I have a VERY valuable rare ax that I've had for years and years and years. I'm guessing that this AX would of had to have been either the one Paul Bunion used, and at the very least the one that George chopped down the Cherry tree. If not theirs it would surely have had to have been either Ole Bens, or Abe Lincolns. Here's a picture of it!
Oh, sorry. I forgot to mention, It's so old it's shrunk over the years!!!!! :)
Is that Jeremy? Either that or dat boy is ONE BIG DUDE. ;)
Yep, that's Jeremy! If he keeps growing he'll wind up pushing 6 feet tall! Last year I told one of my hands I'd give him 20 dollars to give him a birthday whipping. Then I told Jeremy I'd give him 20 dollars not to let the guy whip him. THEY WRESTLED TO A DRAW!!!!! ;D ;D ;D
The boy's not so stout on his right side, but he makes up for it with his left!!!!!!
The ax is only about two inches long, and about a inch wide. Somebody's used it sometime for pecking or something cause you can see a few dings and where it's been sharpened a long time ago. Also it's not the origional handle, the handle is obviously homemade. Looks like good metal, for sure it's not cast, but I'll never use or grind on it. Quality made with a bevel between the eye and the edge. Not just flat stamped. No markings.??? I'm thinking my grandmother once gave it to me but I was real little and can't remember for sure.
My latest find fits in my 2 man saw category. Kinda sorta. Well, you decide.
Look at the video clip. ;D (https://forestryforum.com/media/2bunnysaw.mpg)
That's a neat piece.
You might be interested in this item somewhere in your collection as a unique conversation piece.

New addition. Keep a look out for one of these, they are kinda cool. Its from the Franklin Mint back in the 70's Made from pewter and HEAVY!
Looks like his axe handle is limp as a wet noodle. :D
Hm...dunt look like hes-a-gettin much done dare and dat does look a tad bit limp...maybe its the axe dat heby and dats-a-why he aint-ta gittin much dun?...anyways....COOL!!!!!
An addition that is a stretch but it looks like a saw! There are still 3 wrapped new ones in the box of the dozen it started with

I do. ;D
Jeff:
I don't know if you can stand cuckoo clocks, but their are some night Black Forest cuckoo clocks with a lumberman's theme. Here is a link to one I like. All these clocks are original too, no two are alike.
http://www.cuckooclock.de/sitems/2-86283t/
The water wheel, shingle maker and the dancers are all animated, and yup their is a tiny little cuckoo bird above the dancers. :)
Basically posting this picture to make Chris Last jealous cause we ain't heard from him in awhile. Its an update to my loggers whiskey decanters. I found another one a couple weeks ago. :)
I knew an old war vet from WW2 who made those horse drawn bobsleds. He even carved the horses and he painted the runners red and the horses where life-like. He made them years ago when the hands were a bit more steady. He's passed away now and had no family of his own. It was he and the wife and lotsa nieces and nephews. Has one surviving brother out of 7, whom I know, but not real well. We used to hunt a little bit with his brother, but mostly with the old vet, whom we also fished with for years (grandfather and I). The old guy used to make axes (and blades) of wood, designed for ashtray stands. He's even made those hand sleds and tobagons for the local kids, years gone buy. He used to made tons of axe handles, my uncle would always bust them up split'n wood. Red oak doesn't make much of an axe handle. Need ironwood or maple. My uncle has a hand sled with the runners and irons on the runners. We had alot of odds and ends from old sleds and horse harnass around here, but it was in bad shape, so it ended up in the dump or buried in the barn when we tore it down. What was left behind here on the old farm from father's uncle, wasn't much, you could be sure of that because the cousins woulda lifted it. After we bought and paid for the place they were still rumaging and ranging for stuff, mostly junk. I have an eye for what's good stuff versus what's plain old junk. ;)
Tammy talked me into going out this weekend. Stopped at an old junk shop friday and found this old tin display box I think the handles are original to the box but really dont know how to tell.

Jeff,
Ditto Ed-k. Have two old circle blades about to meet my new ESAB plasma cutter. Those babies could fetch a premium, if'in a guy need a spare job. Way cool idea. :o :o :o :o :o :o :o
Reid
Jeff, did Tammy make you empty the dynamite boxes first? Just wondering :D :D :D
Reid, I wouldnt limit yourself to actual sawblades, heck, that plasma cutter can cut out the tooth profile just as easy. The guy that did mine said, let me know if you ever get any extra, I can sell them in a heart beat. THis guy had sheet after sheet of steel setting in there. All he had to do was pattern my saw and cut them out anytime he wanted if he was thinkin. One person in a thousand could probably tell you "Hey! that aint a real blade!"
Dynamite boxes were all empty :D, but I did get an old blasting cap tin one time that had to have its contents disposed of. :o
Did you have fun doing it? ;D
nope! Scared ta death.
If you want some modern equipment "toys" go to these sites-
http://www.tjtoday.com - Timberjack's newsletter - You can get two skidders, a knuckleboom loader and a track feller buncher there.
http://www.davesmodeltoys.com/ - lots of model toys here - Cat Skidders, and Wheel Loaders
http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=6970&productId=200204624&R=200204624 - This is a neat model of a Cat Harvester machine. The arms on the processing head move and it has a little saw bar that comes out!
There's always e-bay. Type in logging and click on toys and several sources for mostly cat skidder models will come up. There are some other items there as well.
A John Deere or Cat forestry equipment dealer keeps some equipment models on hand as well.
Jeff ,
Good point on the plasma cutter cutting out the gullets too.
Grampa was nightwatchman for a quarry in eastern Ohio and his barn organizing method consisted of many many dynamite boxes nailed to the wall. The barn was one of those hasty old "depression barns" as I call them. No real foundation and probably began to rot into the ground the day they built it. He had 40-50 dynamite boxes and before my Grandma sold the place my job was too tear down the safety hazard for the neighbor who bought the place. They had 8 children and 30 grand children and I don't know how many great grand children. Everyone down the line got a box and at least one of the old license plates tacked to the wall. We all had spent hours in that lod musty wreck of a building over the years. They never really had any money but he cobbled thing together left and right for all the children. Lots of cool memories and many scary things appeared in that barn over the years.
FUN MEMORIES, REID
Alright Jeff.....WHER'd YA GET UM!!!!!...those are TOOOO cool...are they the Kontinental too? You have succedded in makin me jelious....I REALLY like those...ALOT....whens the bidding start??
I think this song book dates to around the 40's early 50's. Have not found a date in it.
Oops! I was wrong on that date. Found refernce in two places on the internet.

Ya gotta wonder about a man who has a can of embalming fluid...
Well, wonder about him... or FEAR HIM....
I love the Lumber Jack song book... "With Yodel Arrangements"...
Not sure, but I think that's scarier than the embalming fluid.
Jeff, I'm sure glad I don't live with you, coz the next thing I'd make ya buy is a feather duster! :D
Great photos, and great collection, thanks for sharing them!!!
asy :D
