Title: Air filtration on Stihl 090
Post by: fencerowphil (Phil L.) on November 11, 2003, 05:27:50 PM
Has anyone out there found a good way to improve air filtration on a Stihl 090? The stock filter system is poor and leaks sawdust around the flange. ???

I use the saw for milling and have taken the trouble of using Stihl's best synthetic oil, but what use is that, if it's breathing fiber. (I may be old enough to need a little extra, but don't think the saw does.)

Phil, do you mean it leaks dust all the time, or when you take the filter off for cleaning?

Which filter, green or black?

The flocked filter is a simple nylon frame with flocked mesh.  Even after I have applied a build-up of tape to help the nylon frame conform to the intake housing,  dust still is visible inside the cover area - where it should not be.   I can also, see traces of dust coming in around the nylon flange portion of the filter's frame  which fits it to the carburetor intake/venturi.  This lets the bad stuff right into the carb!

Kevin,
the 090 has a single stage filter - not much of a filter.  No colors involved.  It is really a poor set up - nothing like newer models, so far as I can tell.  I am considering making a multi-stage filter myself, or altering the intake area to something which might be used on a racing saw, etc.

I was thinking 066 for some reason.
The black filter is for extremely dusty environments.
A filter modification is likely the only way to beat the dust problem.
