Here are three bowls that I finished a few weeks ago. Den Socling sent me some of the Wenge & Red Beech he had left over. Just wanted to show you all what I make with short pieces of wood.

Those are absolutely beautiful! Great job! Do you sell any of them?
Nice turnings Saw... Is that bottom bowl the Wenge? I thought is was usually darker, with light streaks? What are you finishing those with?
SAW WOOD
VERY impressive...nicely done and very tastful...my lathe scares me...lol....very nice job!!!!!!!!!!!!
I gotta say WOW! Is the middle one Red Beech?
Saw Wood,
All I can say is WOW (https://forestryforum.com/smile/Wow.gif)
Those are some very nice bowls.
Very nice sawwood, the only thing I can make with small pieces is kindling. :)
Nice job! I like the bottoms especially. :)
Very nice :)
nice job i like the center one. 8)
Sweeeeeeeet!!! Amazing, very nice work.
I should have put information on each one. The first one
is Walnut and Maple. The bottom and top are stave pices
and the middle and top ring is maple. The second one is
Ash with a cherry bottom. The last one is splated soft
maple. With segmented turning you just need short pices
to make a bowl. I am working on open segmented bowls
and will post them when done. I have just been turning a
while so i haven't sold ony yet. If any one would like to
supply me with there short pices of wood i could make
you a small bowl in trade.

Sawwood
Very nice work !!!!!!!!!!!!!! 8) 8) 8)
You got it, Sawwood. ;D Or, Turning wood? 8) check your private mail line.
You have some very beautiful pieces. Thank You for sharing.
Sawwood,
I really like your segmented bowls.
Are you useing a 3" face plate or a screw center?
We have been saving Walnut burls for turning. This is one of five pallets. We Anchor sealed all pieces.

Here is a Red Elm bowl I started, it was getting late so I let it sit over night thinking I would finish it the next morning. Wrong, the sapwood rim cracked ??? The only reason I kept it was of the Quartersawn ray that showed up.

Great work Sawwood! Someday I hope to make the time to get back to turning again. I will need a bunch of practice before I turn out anything as nice os your work :)
Al, those rays are spectacular! Could you remove the sap wood and save the piece?
Very nice Sawood.
Beautiful work!! Now I gotta find some small pieces to send... ;D
sawwood,
thanks for sharing. beautiful work :o 8)
And I like them too!
Mark
Thanks all for the kind words, ElectricAl; I use a 3"
faceplate on a 10" plywood block. I will be putting
some photos of how i make the segmented bows
soon.
Sawwood
Very nice, that is the "craft" in craftsman.
Wow sawwood, those are relly impressive! :o Your workmanship is beautiful!
If I'd known you had such talents, I would've sent some pieces home with you this summer when you were up visiting.
What sizes do you need?
Patty
When Sawwood showed me what he could do with little pieces of wood, I found these segmented bowls very interesting. I did a search and found lots of people making them. If you look at this site: http://www.woodturns.com/articles/projects/kevin_neelley/frame_miter_segment_bowl.htm
I think you will be even more impressed. These things take a lot of time. Other sites show a lot of math in calculating your finished design. I really want to do it but I doubt that I will ever have the patience, ;)
OneWithWood,
On this bowl we are done :'(
I turned it green, and as a green bowl drys it distorts. It is egg shaped now and would be difficult to sand the inside if remounted on the lathe. ::)
I really like the way a green turning distorts as it drys. It adds some character to the piece ;)
But Sawwood has stepped it up a notch on the technical end ;D
I keep going back and looking at his bowls :o

Sawwood,
Very nice turnings, I particularly like all of them.
What kind of lathe ya using?
The bowls have a nice finish on them, mind if I ask how u went about it? Finishes can make or break a project, so I'm always interested in how other folks go about it. Thanks
:) Cool Beans, GGoooooD job, just cool,
To make a segmented bow i first draw the size and shape
out on paper and then with a computer program i git the
size and angles i need to cut the pices. After cutting them
i glue up the staves or rings and this takes the longest
time. I them mount on a wood face plate and start turning
it to the shape i drew on paper but some time it come out
a little diff. After i finish turning and sanding i use a wipe
on varnish or lacquer. I will take some photos this week
end to show the steps i go threw to make one.
Sawwood
Sawwood,
Nice thing about one offs, is that you can be flexible with the design. Now if I had to make 4 identical pieces, I'd be in trouble :D !
I'll bet there is a tense moment or two when u first flick the switch on and put the gouge to that spinning glue up!
I have done a fair amount of spindle turning, but never any segmented work. It looks rather complicated with all the angles and keeping track of where to put all those small pieces.
Have u tried Zinzer's Seal Coat, it's a 2 lb.cut wax free shellac to build depth. Then top coat with a varnish or lacquer?
WOW, those are beautifull pieces of work. What size pieces you looking for sawwood? Ever work with red cedar?
Those are absolutely gorgeous. You will get me to buy a lathe yet. I was hoping to put that one off for a while, but I don't think it is going to work. But I'm still going to take some of the oak and walnut I've got down and make some plane knobs...then you can show me how the "pro's" do this bowl stuff. And I want to see one of the hackberry bowls when you do one. That discoloration should make it really interesting.
No trip to the woods today, and probably this weekend either. My shower is leaking through the tile and I've got some work to do there. Deer opener anyway. Don't want to get shot while gassing up the saw. Then there is the funeral I've got to be a pallbearer at this afternoon in Butler, MO. My friends grandma. Gotta get cleaned up here real quick. Still have some sheetrock crap on me from the shower.
Again, good job.
Mark
want some Osage, brazillian cherry, Koa, or walnut?
