Title: No flowers
Post by: jim king on January 18, 2011, 09:27:25 AM
At our other house I had great luck with this flowering vine and had them every where but after a year in the new house they are 16 to 18 feet tall and refuse to flower.  Every one in town has flowers on this plant except me.

Any ideas why no flowers ?¿ ???

I dont know what they are called in other parts of the world but I have seen them every where.

You've not been giving them evening waterings while stepping outside after a couple beers have you?

Those are bougeinvilla. I have them around one side of my fence. The thorns will tear you up just mowing near them.

Jim,

Mine do the same thing. Some will flower a year and ones right next to them won't then next year they all will. I don't know why.

Raider Bill:

Now that you have given me the name I did a search and maybe it is the lack of Magnesium in the soil.  There is none-no Magnesium in the soil here.

We have yellow ones also that are nice but if you plant them near the fucia colored ones they turn to fucia.  I don´t understand that either.  The same holds true with the canas, they all turn red if there is a red one near.

If that's the case see if you can get epsom salts like what you soak your feet in. A 1/4tsp in a gallon of water to start with, maybe once a month.  Another thing that heavy flowering plants need is phosphorus. A source of it is chicken litter but be careful because it can burn plants easily.

Chicken litter is easy to come by here but Epsom salts may be difficult but I will go look in a few drug stores.  Another site says micro nutrients.  No miracle grow here.  That will be another 25 years until we reach that level..

One of the sites says that they do not like wet feet.  The water level here is 18 inches down so I will try some in big flower pots also.
