the 540 and the tigercat are similar in price-over $100,000 or in that neighborhood. i was going to order a 604 here in Dillwyn at Bullock Bros, but i didnt think i could make the payments :(. It has a 6.7 Cummins (190 HP) Tier III motor, 23.1X26 tires, and weighs 26,000 LBS. it is a nice machine, and the deere is too, but how do they expect us to pay for it?

u cant, unless u r crooked and dont have a problem with screwing people. we have a 380c timberjack-it had 5200 hours on it when we bought it. we ended up giving 40000 which is alot less interest to pay on then 100000. u almost have to look for a low houred machine if u want to survive. we just bought a 490 prentice which is a 30000 ib machine and gave 24000 for it and its a 2002.  it takes awhile but in the end if u want to stay afloat u cant afford to buy new. but i would sure like to.

i know what you mean. i would like to buy new too, but it is impossible to make the payments. i like the older, smaller, easier-to-work on skidders anyway. they are easier to manuver it the thinning and selective cuts.  how is that 490 prentice working out for you?

Every used machine was bought new by somebody! I am not in a position to buy new equipment by any means, and like the simplicity of older machines, but there are plenty of loggers out there who have grown their businesses over the years and can buy new equipment. It had a lot of advantages if a guy can afford it. With cable machines I think the price is a bit scary, because you can only increase output so much to make up the cost. But with grapple skidders especially the newer machines are much more productive than those of 10 years ago, so while the price and bills may be higher many times the cost per ton of wood produced is lower. As long as you have the markets for that increased production, something I worry about with the current economic situation.

we havent put the 490 in the woods yet. we r going through it in the shop first. but it is a little big, i worry how good its going to maneuver in the woods. i guess we will find out soon enough. after we get it out there i will post pictures.

that looks like a nice rig thats for sure,   but like others have said it would be pricey.   Nothing like a brand new machine,    but looking at the few logging companies around here that are still surviving..   they are the guys that kept grinding it out with the same equipment and not buying new gear,    because when the mill shuts down   the monthly payments keep on coming.

I like those tigercats though,  all hydrostat smooth runnin.

Anytime i put bigger, faster, or more equipment on the job, i worked myself out of a job, and the money had to be spreed thinner.

Is it called "Extreme Loggers: Ice Logging" on the Discovery Channel in the states?  Same show?  Having an annoying title is a requirement for any TV program here in the US, it seems.
