not shure if this is a better specimin of picture set 2, bark is different. at first i thought it was popple til i picked them up and seen the ends. when run through the woodsplitter, wood is a nice orange color. these pieces have been sitting on the ground here for about 2 months now, and have been getting darker and darker on the ends. picture dosnt show it but the one end is getting a purple like color. split open its very beautiful i havent picked up anything bigger than 6 in. . all taken local here in mn
On first blush looks like a birch.
the bark isnt flaky at all. its a medium dark grey with lighter radius marks.
Is it light weight stuff and soft? Looks like a young basswood.
pieces are still rather weighty... i have never had basswood darken like these
beech
American beech don't darken like that and it don't grow out there. Does blue beech grow that far west? Don't know if it darkens on exposure either.
Can you get a fresh cut end , like a cookie, and smooth up a 2" square section with a utility knife, then scan the surface with a scanner for a photo? ;D Adjust the scanning preview to take a scan of the smooth section at 600 dpi, then crop out a 500 pixel area. A camera with macro setting is a little tricky to get in focus.

wish i did have a scanner, i know what your getting at :(
it kinda has the same smell as popple/ willow
bark is too smooth to be willow! wood is soft to cut. bark peeled off is almost cork like. looking at the rings, once it got about 2 in dia... it grew really fast
Dodgy Loner Identified it in Wood #2. Buckthorn.
Only two native buckthorn species in Canada, and that's the Cascara buckthorn in BC which is tree-like and the alder buckthorn which is shrub-like.
I thought it was similar to pictures online i have found, seems that their isnt very many, or of any real quality pictures of a trees wood in green form.
