Hardware Store security video of the 6.3 "Aftershock" on Monday

Although the quakes are not huge they are occurring at a very shallow level under the city, so are very violent in the nearby area. the actually acceleration forces are way above what even our current building codes are designed to withstand

We have them here once in a while but as we are in a swamp they are not strong at all.  The parrot cages swing and they scream and that is about it.   I would not want any more than that.

What do you expect when you build on liquid sand and close to a fault line.

have felt some of the bugget ones as live a distant from the quake zone.

The city was actually considered a low risk earthquake area, quite a distance from the main known fault lines. But right on top of a layer of sand and a heap of smaller faults than have just become active  :o

A couple of other cites , including the capital Wellington are built right on the main fault line that created the Islands. But if all the politicians slid into the sea... is that a problem?  :D

Biggest city (Auckland) is built on an active volcanic zone....  ::)

Right here, we have fault lines AND a freaking big volcano, but what the heck...
