Title: A Very Special Auction
Post by: Jeff on February 22, 2012, 05:02:40 PM
(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10001/special_auction.jpg)
I'm excited to tell the Forestry Forum membership about a project that has created a one of a kind item in support of the Forestry Forum. After an inquiry from our member "Rooster" in Wisconsin to another of our members about creating something for the support auctions. Nebruks from Latvia and his fellow craftsman John Neeman, also of Latvia have generously put their time and talents together to create a Handcrafted Axe in the American Felling Axe style. The Axe, Handle, and leather sheath will be completed in the coming days and sent to me to then list in the auctions.

I'll announcing the start of the auction on the top of this post in a week or two. If you are not signed up to bid already, you might want to get that out of the way HERE (https://forestryforum.com/cgi-bin/auction/auction.pl?action=reg). :)

Nebruks sent along some first photos that I put in a video slideshow to share and this note:
QuoteBeauty finished shots will come in 2 days. Maybe Jeff you can already post these pictures in the forum with the information about the particular axe and donation for the forum. Then as the 2nd part would come beauty shots in the forest and also our movie "The Birth Of A Tool" it will also be ready in 2-3 days.

All the best

Jacob

From Nebruks.
Quote"We are a small company located in the small country of Latvia that is located in Northern Europe along the Baltic sea. Our company is founded by two craftsmen. Skilled blacksmith John Neeman and his friend carpenter Jacob, who's passion is traditional woodworking and bladesmithing.

We use our hands to create hand tools that will live and tell their story lying in hands of craftsmen that will use it.

Our traditions of blacksmithing and woodworking walk step by step together. We are uniting our history, traditions and craftsmaniship in one ancient craft. Tool making.

When someone asks, "Why? Why are you making hand tools in this hi tech age?". Then we usually answer them with this quote:

Quote"It is a tragedy of the first magnitude that millions of people have ceased to use their hands as hands. Nature has bestowed upon us this great gift which is our hands. If the craze for machinery methods continues, it is highly likely that a time will come when we shall be so incapacitated and weak that we shall begin to curse ourselves for having forgotten the use of the living machines given to us by God."

    Mahathma Ghandi

Some of the forum's first introductions to Nebruks was when he shared some of the most beautifully done videos I think has ever been posted on the forestry forum. You can find topic here: The old way of felling trees (with a felling axe) (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php/topic,51662.0.html)
Additional Information:
QuoteThe web page www.neemantools.com is under construction at the moment. There will be available - framing chisels, woodworking and forest axes an adzes, drawknifes, froes, hunting knives and kitchen knives. Our page will be ready in a month with possibilities to order tools online and see all the process of how they are being crafted.

This is going to be an awesome auction for a very unique tool. John and Jacob have been making some serious tools that work as good as they look.

I'm almost "giddy"!

Just wait until you see the documentary video on how they make their tools!!!
World class/ Professional...yet humble!!

Get ready for a piece of the "Old Country".

This is the first part to a short documentary movie that Nebruks sent for me to post that shows the whole process of how the John Neeman tools are being hand crafted so you all know the process that created the American Felling Axe for the Forestry Forum.

This is a carpenter's axe.

Years ago I received a call from a gentleman to come mark and sell some of his timber for him.  It was around  his house and shop, his blacksmith shop.  Turned out he was one of the smiths that makes period hardware for the movies, as well as some for the Renaissance Festival sites.  He made iron for the Last of Mohicans film, the more recent one.

He was small in stature, but made the iron ring, and I had a flash back to older days, marking timber and listening to that ring.

The old ways were simpler, and to an extent, more satisfying than now.  I think I need a walk in the woods.

The Axe is on it's way from John and Jacob's workshop in Latvia to Harrison Michigan. When the Axe arrives in a week or two this auction will commence. This is a wonderful thing :)  The one sad thing about this auction for me is that I'm the only one on the forum that doesn't have a chance to own this wonderful gift from our friends in Latvia, however I am one of a few that will actually get a chance to admire it in person.  ;):)

American Felling Axe

Hand forged traditional American Felling axe.
Laminated steel. Using W108 tool steel for the blade.
Hand shaped, (linseed oil and bees wax finish) elm wood handle.

Overall length: 32 inches.
Blade width: 5 inches.
Axe head height: 7.5 inches.
Axe weight: 4.4 pounds

Made as a special donation for the Forestry Forum.

Hey,

I've been in contact with nebruks and John Neeman, and they said that before they shipped the axe they gave it a quick test drive...  something was mentioned about "works just like a chainsaw...without all the noise and air pollution".

Just remember guys, even though it looks pretty, there isn't anything "fluffy" about it. It's one lean, mean, chopping tool.  Who ever wins this auction, better be prepared to give a demo via photos or video. 8D

It can sit in a place of honor when not in use, but it was born of fire and wood...so it should be allowed to fulfill it's birth-rite.

The bidding will not only support the Forum, but it will also send a message to those who made it, in that we appreciate the skill and craftsmanship that they have shared with this community.

Get ready guys...it's almost on Jeff's doorstep!

6 Weeks to Cananda?  Eh?

Well that's what you get for trying to ship a stuffed Spotted Owl, packed in a box made out of Green Ash slab-wood, that spent a month in the trunk of a car owned my a crack dealer, with a big sticker that said, "Caution/Explosives", addressed to the Queen Mum, while she was on holiday in Toronto...haha

Let's hope the customs agents don't like felling axes!!

Meadows Miller, I was just kidding with you. It is a great stool and I am proud to have it. The winning bid was $625.00. Good luck in Alabama I built a cedar sawmill mill there in 1998 around Tuscaloosa Alabama, and ran it for several years before moving to Oklahoma.

I am hoping to have those guys make a couple custom timber-framing tools for me...like a"swan slick", 1" slick, or maybe a competition felling axe.  Just not sure which one.

That's because the delivery guy was on vacation. When I lived in Prince Rupert there was one guy from Terrace to Rupert doing the run. I had a parcel that arrived in Vancouver with a couple days from PA I think. It took 4 weeks to get to Rupert because this guy was on holidays. Things work a lot different out there. :D

I've been admiring that axe, but am no competition for the axe hounds on here. :D ;)

Hi There.

Oh, it looks like the winner of that auction will not be able to use this axe because all the loosing bidders will be standing in a row at the winners door begging to borrow that axe. :)

BTW, thank you all for enjoying our work. We will have also that American Felling Axe model on our web site with possibility to order it directly. I hope that we will finnish our web in approx. a month. But the product list will be updated in near future until it will reach our aims and until all the products we have developed and decided to produce will be made.

I will try to post the 2nd part of our tool making movie in few days.  It will uncover the timber framing chisel/slick making process. I have also made a sharpness test video on that particular auction axe. I will post it here when the auction will start.

And again - thank you all for appreciating our work and keep in touch.

All the best to you folks from Northern Europe/Baltic states.

20 foot should be safe, my hands learned early on that being behind me in the woods is questionable at best, to the side is better.  One learned the hard way, when, on a hot afternoon, the machete slipped from my wet hand and flew past his leg.  Didn't know he could dance.

But from the shaving display on this ax, I might have to put it over the mantle, I could loose a foot.

I think I will start the bid at $500.00,  for the increased medical insurance coverage I will need for that fine piece of steel.

Gentlemen, Gentlemen Please,

I don't know why you are squabling amongst yourselves...there will be plenty of oppurtunity for you guys to order your own axes from Nebruks and John,  seeing as I have had my eye on this prize since before it was even made.   You don't think that I went and talked those guys over in Latvia into donating it just to see it get hung up on someone else's wall... did ya?  I've been savin' up...sold my dog, been riding my bike  in the snow to work, eatin' frozen vegetables from the garden from '08, and now I have 2 paper routes, and got my wife running the lemonade stand out front!
I can't lose!

But thanks for playin' along.

Rooster

Rooster! You can try to sell those frozen wegetables from 2008 as an exclusives to some fancy restaurants. You know it is similar with the good french vine - the older it gets - the much more it will cost. I am sure you will earn much more money with that than selling your wife's sisters kids in an eBay auction. Cheers!

Ya know, in thinking about this, maybe we should low bid this offering, so as not to raise the price on the ones that one may order direct from the maker.

Hmmm, 'tiz a puzzlement. eh eh

Actually, I hope this auction gives Nebruks and John Neeman some nice exposure, and that it generates a fair number of tool orders, or even some pontential customers down the road.  They have been pretty busy, but don't let that stop anyone from contactng them about a custom tool.

I know that I will eventually be placing a couple of tool orders...

I just wonder what the Latvian exchange rate for nephews (by marriage) is...hmm?

Uncle sold the kitchen wood stove and put in an electric heater. So no more kitchen wood split'n. ::)

I may have some strong competition for this axe, especially with Pigman selling his farm. I think the witch will have a little control over his pot though, especially with the new outhouse he just had to spring for.  :) John does have some very nice tools on his facebook page. If a bid is made in the last 5 minutes of the auction, the auction automatically extends 5 minutes from the last bid. The auction will continue until there are no bids within 5 minutes of that last bid.

I can't bid. :'( :'( :'( :'( I must have registered for an auction in the past and now I  can't remember my password. Not to worry, the auction lasts all week and I will get the password figured out before the serious bidding starts. ;) The bids are just high enough for the handle now.

The Axe is already well over $100.00 per pound...and the auction is not even 24 hrs old...we still have 7 days!!!

At this rate , we'll brake the $625 mark previously set by the Stool auction, by...... midday today!!  I have a feeling that this is going to get "crazy" awefully quick.

Well, the axeing price went up $300 in the first 12 hours.  That's $600/day.  At the end of a 8 day auction the winning bid should be $4800.  At that price, the axe should be 'self-wielding" 8) :D

Hey Guys,

Well is seems that my plan to win the axe by liquidating a large pet, delivering newspapers and selling cold lemonade outside in Wisconsin (Early March), has hit some snags.

I had to give the guy, who bought my dog, back his money...because he says that all she wants to do is wrestle, chase cats, and put nose prints on the inside of his truck windows!!!  I was like, "What do you expect?  She's a 90 lbs American Pitbull Terrier, that likes riding "shotgun", and doesn't know that she is the toughest dog within 25 square miles!"

The paper routes were a bust since today I had to deliver 152 sunday addiitons!!  And since I have been riding my bycycle, that took way too much effort...and I think I pulled a muscle or something.

So unless I can figure out a differnt way, I am just going to have to "cheer" for some of my fellow FF members to win this thing!!!

Good luck,

Rooster

I used to read Dennis the Menace cartoons in the papers.  One of my favs went like this........

Dennis was standing behind his lemonade stand, a pitcher on the table with an empty glass.  He was talking to a motorist who was parked at the curb, leaning out his driver's side window.  The sign on the front of the stand read, "LEMONADE  $1000".  The caption on the cartoon read, "Yeah, but I only have to sell just one."

Yeah, that's the ticket.

About 8 or 9 years ago, my brother and wife were awakened by a suspicious noise coming from their 1 year old daughter's room.  It sounded mechanical and like maybe someone was trying to break in.  My bro grabbed his 9mm and quietly snuck into her room.

His daughter was okay, the windows were secure, and all was well.  He couldn't find anything wrong!  As he was quietly leaving the room, one of the toys on the floor, an Elmo doll, loudly said, "GOODBYE FRIEND!" and shut down.  Scared the living crappola outta my brother.  He has never admitted to me whether he squeezed off a few rounds into poor little Elmo in the heat of the moment.  I probably would have!

True story.

This is simply amazing......and I got to see it! :)

Welcome to the Forum.

Our auctions are one of several ways to support the Forum. And we think a lot of the Forum, so this Axe is just a great excuse to see who can "win" the prize.

Hope you stick around and tell us a bit about your interest in the Forestry Forum. Pull up a stump, so to speak. :)

There once was an auction for an axe,

Dig deeper he should,
For chopping of wood,
Though warm, his net worth he now lacks.

Please accept these additions to your post to maintain the limerick format.  No offense intended in this editing!

The doctor is all about wishin',
To win this auction will take intuition,
To hang the axe on his door,
He'll have to bill more,
Then scare his patients away and go fishin'.

There once was an auction on a forum,
As time progressed it lost decorum.
Now limericks abound,
Some good, some not so sound
Ah sanity.... Where art though to be found?

We see the auction progress,
And the bidders digress
Instead of bidding, they come here to share a word
The price is now beyond absurd,
Woe to the winner if the axe is a turd!

As Dragnet made famous, "Just the Facts"
Some members have alluded to spending their refund of Tax,
For an item, whose artistry is not lax,
(although you won't find one on Fifth avenue at Saks)
Enquiring minds want to know.... who is going to win the Axe?

Speaking of stories about axes....quite a few years ago Price Chopper grocery stores had a logo with a hatchet imbedded into a coin simulating their name...Price CHOPPER!  I think I the coin was a cartoon Susan B. Anthony dollar coin, so the axe appeared to be stuck into the head of a woman.  I think some women's abuse associations complained and the company changed the logo due to the pressure applied.  Not that I'm into violence against women.  I can assure you I'm not.  But since I never associated the logo with that issue, I thought it just another sign of our times and smiled.  Just another axe tale.  Maybe I could buy some axe tail soup from them!

Do you think the axe is could be similar to the ring in Lord of the Rings....corrupting its possessor with evil?  Does Jeff go invisible when he picks it up?  He doesn't look much like a Hobbit to me!  Or is he really Gollum, seeking the AXE for himself!  We could be bidding against the "Eye of Mordor".  And there are some bidders who've disguised their identities.  Are they Auks or the minions of Sauron?  Aaauuugggghhhh!  It's the AXE!... the AXE!...the AXE!!!

Tammy talked me into letting her take the axe to the bus garage for "show and tell" yesterday. They were clamoring to see it after watching the videos. I was concerned about allowing it, because you could technically say an axe is a weapon, but she got the proper clearances and took it in. Her boss did the shave your arm test with it and is now hyped on the idea of getting a knife made if possible. He says he has never had a hunting knife that sharp let alone an axe.

If you axe me
There are good ships,
and there are wood ships,
and ships that sail the sea.
But the best ships, are friendships,
And may that always be
but if an axe in your hand
is not meant to be
then all of your bids are not so grand
cause the axe will belong to me
and we will still friends be

There was once a hand made ax
Which filled our minds to the max
It was freely offered to all
For a bid, quite small
But the big boys got aholdit
And it went to the boldest.
And that's all I have to say about that.

I hated to see him go so early this morning and not have a chance to visit. We got a really special axe holder last night as well thanks to Rooster and Stumpy. I've busted too many handles and would simply be crushed if I ever did that with this axe, but I'm seriously contemplating ordering something someday for use in my woods up north. I just don't know exactly what I need. right now in the back of my quad I carry and old old double bit with a sawed off handle. I use it when walking through my cedars for pruning off lower branches and dead branches as I walk.

Then again, my new axe is calling me. Okay, I'll do it. But it will have to be up on my beloved U.P. property, not on some old yard tree here or meaningless price of brush. I'll use it to cut a cedar tree for whatever project will be my next. I don't have anything planned, but there is always a project waiting to be started that just hasn't found me yet.

Maybe Scott should recount our steps, our worries, and our plans as we went.  He knows that better than anyone.

As for the bidding at the end, Scott and I spoke on the phone about an hour before the end of the auction.we decided on a final price, with some rapid-fire bidding back and forth.   We also mentioned that "overtime" would be fun, using the 5 minute rule to extend the bidding.  I got a call from him late and reiterated that, as long as he bid within 5 minutes of my last bid, even though the post read that the bidding was closed, that he would be the last to bid.  $1350 was reached, and Scott won fair and square. :D ;) :D

I wish to extend my thanks to all, first Scott for all his efforts, Rooster and Piston for keeping us sharp throughout, and finally Jeff and Tammy, who have earned the respect and gratitude they have received.  I apologize for unleashing the limericks.  I know that many of you would have thrown cyber-tomatoes if you could.  Maybe Jeff could work on that as an improvement for the Forum. :) ;D 8)

Maybe Scott should recount our steps, our worries, and our plans as we went.  He knows that better than anyone.

I guess that I should start this off by saying "axe and you shall receive"   :D

Thinking back, three things came together at the same time that led to the idea of the axe team.  The first thing was reading about some of the challenges that Jeff was dealing with from a couple of former members, and the hassle and frustration all around.  The second thing was the thread about folks missing Tom, and how a number of us had been thinking about him recently and thinking back about his practicality and wisdom.  Then, when Jeff started this thread about the axe, John and Jacob's exquisite craftsmanship and how he was sad because he couldn't bid on it himself, the idea started forming about pulling a group together to bid and win the auction, and then donate the axe back to Jeff and Tammy.

In the back of my mind was the realization of how much, and how positive an impact that the Forestry Forum has had upon our lives these past twelve years.  If we need some advice on almost any topic, chances are that there is a thread in the archives with some great information.  If we don't find what we're looking for there, all that we need to do is make a new post and there will be a variety of responses from folks that have "been there, done that".   Tom's many pearls of wisdom that he shared; both in his posts as well as in personal messages or e-mails were also in the back of my mind.  This is truly a wonderful community that has been created and provided to us, and I figured that I was not the only person who felt this way.

Norm and Burlkraft were the first two members that I reached out to, to see if they would be willing to participate.  I knew that both of them would provide me with some solid advice about the idea and would let me know if they thought that it was not wise.  Fortunately, their response was favorable, so more folks were contacted.  Most of them were frequent posters, and in the initial e-mails Norm and Burlkraft were referenced as both being on board in order to lend more credibility to the project!  Not knowing what visibility that Jeff and the Mods have to PM's, I did not want to go into much detail; instead I figured that if I PM'd everybody asking for their e-mail address to "get their input on an idea", I could then communicate with them privately, share the concept and ask them if they wanted to participate.

Universally, the responses to my e-mails were very supportive and positive.  Almost everybody that was approached wanted to join and made a financial pledge; of the few that did not join most were in the midst of challenging financial circumstances (and we've all been there at some point or another, so it's easy to relate).

Rooster was another person that was approached early in the process, as he was the one that knew John Neeman and Jacob (Nebruks) and was responsible for the original axe donation from them.  Rooster had some great insight, and was the first to suggest that we purchase axe #2 from them and provide it to Jeff for a future auction, so that anybody that was outbid by the team on the first auction would have another shot at winning an axe (a few other folks also suggested this as well).  One of our biggest concerns was that we did not want to corrupt the auction process; yet we liked the idea of pooling our funds and giving the axe back to Jeff and Tammy.  Securing a second axe would help to prevent this, and in the back of my mind I liked having a "backup plan" in case that someone outbid us during the auction (Sawmill – your bids kept me awake at night!)  If we were outbid on the first auction, we'd have the second axe already being crafted to present to the Brokaw's as a gift.

My unstated goal at first was to be able to reach at least $1,000.00, as I figured that the bidding may reach that level and wanted to be sure that we had enough funds on hand to win the auction.  As the pledges approached that level, I upped the target to $1,250.  As more folks joined the team, they were asked if they had any suggestions for other folks to approach to join us, and the list and the amount of donation that we were compiling kept growing.

Our biggest worry was that Jeff would figure out that something was going on, because of the high volume of PM's that I was sending to folks asking for their contact info, as well as the potential for someone to "spill the beans".  Fortunately, Jeff never caught on and although a few comments on the forum were provocative, we were able to maintain our confidentiality!

As more folks kept joining, and making pledges, we started up an e-mail distribution list to introduce everybody, to talk strategy, and get everybody's input on issues such as making a presentation case (consensus was not to have a box, instead to have something that allowed easy removal for viewing).  Rooster and Stumpy's craftsmanship of the display really turned out well.

One of the funniest things was all of the "trash talk" that started going down on the Axe thread from various members of the Axe team (and a few non-members as well).   I gotta tell you, we were having a blast!

We discussed what we would do if an outside bidder kept raising the price.  Do we keep bidding it up, or raise more money for the forum by letting them win the first axe and then give Jeff and Tammy our donations and the second axe.  Let me tell you, there was some spirited discussion back and forth on this topic!    Jacob wrote from Latvia expressing his and John's astonishment about the generosity of the Forum Members, and also asked us what our plan would be if someone outbid us at the end.

Then came the discussion related to how to let Jeff and Tammy know about the gift.  Should we keep it a secret, or let them know our names?  When should we let them know, etc?  At first, we figured that the soonest that I could get a check and letter to them would be on Tuesday or Wednesday, as the auction ended late Saturday and it would be Monday before a check could be overnighted.  Then, someone suggested that we let them know right away after the end of the auction, so that started the wheels turning about how best to accomplish that.  Fortunately, Burlkraft volunteered to drive over to see them on the day of the auction; arriving about 30 minutes before the end.  So, a letter needed to be drafted in advance (and ultimately two letters - one letter was based upon us winning the auction, the other was based upon us losing to an outsider and instead letting Jeff and Tammy know that Axe #2 would be theirs).  A cashier's check was also obtained from "The Forestry Forum Axe Team" and sent to Steve along with the two letters.

Then, there was the final bidding strategy!  DoctorB graciously volunteered to be one of the final bidders, and we hashed out a plan to "take it into overtime" in order to add to the excitement.

Unbeknownst to me, some of the members of the "axe team" were jumping in and making pledges on Friday and Saturday, with the goal of "keeping things interesting".  I did not know all of their handles (in some instances their auction handle was different than their FF handle), so I started sweating a bit wondering if we had some serious competition for ultimately winning the axe....

Here's a little tidbit that nobody knows, and that was although I knew that the auction was supposed to be extended by 5 minutes if anybody bid in the last five minutes of the auction, when I placed a bid 4 minutes before the end and the "countdown clock" never changed, I started to sweat....  Then DoctorB placed a bid, and the clock still didn't change to reflect the 5 minute extension, so I bid again, and then he got in the "last bid" a few seconds before the auction was supposed to end.  The auction popped up as "Closed" on my screen, and I had not won!  ARGHHH...... so I called Doc to "congratulate" him on winning, and he told me to get my butt in gear and make another bid, since it wasn't really "closed"...  Fortunately I did, and we were able to keep up the "back and forth" for a few more minutes before I placed the "final bid" that Doc and I had agreed would "end" the auction.

WOW – what a blast this has been!  What's really been great is that we not only had the chance to recognize and reward Jeff and Tammy for their "gift" to us, we also forged a great working partnership between a diverse group of members on our "axe team".

Without exception, everybody on the "Axe Team" was a pleasure to work with, and all contributed to our collective success.  Many thanks to everybody for a successful outcome!

Excellent recounting, Scott.  Excellent!

Second AXE??  I'm not sure I could make through another axe auction! :D ;). So I'll tell you guys right now, I'm not gonna be the one runnin' up the price next time.

And Magicman is already ahead of me.  I would love them to craft something just for me.  Probably a knife.  When all the dust settles, I think I'll order direct.

Finally, and no one asked me to say this, I would ask our loyal Forumites to continue to give back to the Forum in the future.  Doesn't take much, but helping maintain this spot the way it's been is important to all of us.  If you can, give to those that make your life richer.  You'll only be helping yourself.

You and me both, Doc.

With all of the time that I have been spending on the computer these past few weeks, (not to mention my laughs from reading some of the smack posts!), my wife probably thinks that I've got a mistress...

She's a surgeon too, except in her case she specializes in castrating animals....  I've seen her take a male cats, uh... shall we say "parts"..., in about 90 seconds, so I think that I'd better pay attention to her for a while...

I'll sure be watching though.

Now folks, you know that Doc and I expect for the second axe to bring even more at auction than the first one!   :D

Well all I can say is great job guys and gals, had me fooled, but I kept on thinking man they are really crazy for this axe, I think Jeff summed it up best in the video, to quote Jeff "Holy C**p" , I also liked the look on Jeff face when he was told to "sit down!" you could tell he had no idea what was coming and was kind of uncomfortable with the whole goings on.... but it all worked out well in the end.

THE AXE IS HERE!

Any suggestions on when to start and end the auction and for how long to let it run?  I was thinking on starting it tonight, and letting it run until Sunday Evening. or we could let it go until the following Sunday. Or we could end it during the week.  I'm just trying to figure out what would be best for those that want to bid. :)

I think you should start it a week before the pig roast and end it the Thursday or Friday night before the roast starts.  That a way, someone may have something big waiting for them.

Well, I'd rather have it out of the way leading up to the pigroast so I don't have that to be concerned about. My head is just plain full those last few days. The pigroast is only about 3 weeks a way so if someone happens to win it that is attending, they can certainly pick it up here. The one given to me will certainly be here for anyone that would like to look it over. :)

I'll start it tonight and we'll end it a week from tonight.  :)

The auction software has an "anti-sniper" feature that keeps someone from making a last second bid to win it. If a bid is made within 5 minutes of the scheduled end of the auction, the auction is continued another 5 minutes from that bid. This will continue until there are no more bids within 5 minutes of the last bid, at which time, the auction will close.
