Title: Sawing cabin logs
Post by: jdtuttle on March 13, 2012, 07:44:01 AM
Looking for advice on sawing small cabin logs. They will be 6 1/4" x 6 1/4" finished. Sawing white pine. I know to keep the heart in the center on smaller logs. But how about some of the larger 18" to 24" logs. Can I saw a couple 6" x 6" logs from the edges & not worry about the heart? Or will they have a tendency to move while in the kiln? They will be milled into D logs with T & G.

I don't know anything about white pine, but one thing you might do is oversize them a little bit, then resaw after they come out of the kiln before going through the molder. That way if they move a little, you can straighten em out.

it is tough figuring to get multiple D shaped logs out of large logs.... thats why i just decided to cut square logs. i can use square logs with a little wane on some of em, and realize a greater amount of logs for the house. mine will be covered on all 4 sides by a porch so square works for me.

If some do bow you could cut those ones up for your short pieces between winddos, doors and corners. Also when you dress the 6x6s I would run the bow on the tung side, so you might take some of it out with some clamps or screws or a combination when putting it together.

Sounds like a great project.  I'm sure you will need lots of other lumber for trim, even rafters or joists so I wouldn't worry too much about trying to sqeeze 2 wainy 6x6's out of a log,  instead of getting 1 nice one and some nice 2" material.

I am often guilty of getting greedy with a log , especially when I have only 1 dimension on the mind.

Stoped in at my friends sawmill yesterday. They manufacture log cabins, been doing it for 20 some years. I asked him the same question. He said they get one finished D log from every log. The reason he gave me was if a log checks it will stop at the heart & not go all the way through. Makes sense.

It really is a small world! They're all good people. My dad rebuilt one of their Detroit diesels a few years back. I take my planer blades to Bobby to have sharpened, as well as any larger stuff to have machined. I can draw it out in CAD and take the files with me for his CNC equipment. Sure does save time over my manual machines.
A couple years ago we were up visiting and Dicky wanted to 'showboat' some of the new mod.'s on their mill. Boy that thing was fast -except when the carriage jumped the track! Bobby said, "I told them to install the hold downs on the carriage, maybe now they'll listen."
I'm actually heading up to see Bobby today, if I can catch him in between golf games or flying his plane!
