well i have been collecting stuff again for my mill. yesterday went to harbor freight picked up 2-2000# winches . figure 1 to use for lifting head ,the other for turning logs.
got them both for 100.00 buck including the 2 year replacement warranty .
at that price  i think i can make them work lol

Good luck with them. I tried one and the cable got caught between the hub and the case...destroyed itself in seconds. HF just came out with a new line of "better" winches...are these the one's you bought?

Steve,

Something that works great is using a "Weldsprocket" gear that Tractor Supply carries.  You can take the sprocket and split in half with a bandsaw, place the two halves around drum on the winch and weld in to the drum and where you split it.  Used this technique for a couple things on the farm and it worked quite well.

May have to machine the hole larger to a nice fit to drum.  Another option is buy the hub also, and weld it to the end of the winch drum, and weld the sprocket to that.  Depends on how  you wanna set the winch up.  Good Luck!

This isn't a very good pic, the one on the left is a HF cable hoist 120V, on the right 12V

I thought I had seen them factory made with the sprocket some where, I did google it and came up with this blog.
