Was watching the local "Cops" show on TV the other night. You know the follow the local cops with a camera stuff.
They were with a lady road patrol officer in Northland and she's following an old Kenworth with a low loader trailer and a HUGE Kauri log, about 10ft dia. It was hanging out over the sides of the trailer. Thinks, that looks overweight... and pulls the guy over.
Anyway it was a swamp Kauri, 30-50,000 year old chunk of wood.
Problems really started when they put him on the scales.. 8 tons overweight, over all, and individual axles. Stickered the truck on the spot and wouldn't let it back on the road.
Ad break and they are back next day. Big crane at the weigh station and the drivers boss is there with a big Stihl and 5ft bar. Slices 8ft off the log, they crane it off to another truck. Cops check both trucks and they are on their way.
$7,500 in fines later
Now you know why Swamp Kauri costs so much....
Ian
I got pulled over last year for being 7000lbs over weight with a Dump-truck hauling gravel.. $3500 in fines and a couple trips to court.. All's good now
i have never driven anything near that heavy, but why would anyone take a chance with that kind of load knowing he would get weighed and surely realizing that he was way overweight? just stupid or what?
And here I thought that question was directed at me. :D

I drive an over the road truck,Pulling a flat bed 48' trailer,Most of the time we have to take the shipper word for the weight. they will tell you the truth ::),
The fine goes to the driver & not the shipper or trucking company.I got a fine in La,a couple of years back for being 800 lbs over,But my bills said I didn't weigh that much,To me if the fines went back to the shipper alot of that would stop.Mark,,,,,,
Gday
the sad part is they would have known well before they got it on the truck it was going to be well over weight :-\ that cuunk off change and two days lost would have been better spent on a swinger or shifting their mill out to site I have always had to bust up anything bigger than 5' dia due to loader size the biggest i did was 8' and thats a Huge chunk of wood :) :)
Regards Chris
Couldn't they have just bought an overweight permit and got an escort to keep the log intact? Seems like a shame to lop 8 ft of a log like that.
If memory serves as of a few years ago the largest over weight fine was levied in northern Ohio .If I recall correctly it was a huge upsetter forge destined for some place in Indiana .I'll Google and see what I can find .
I would like to see pictures of that log on the trailer. Wonder how much it cost to get the crane there too?
I couldn't find the upsetter but I did find this from 2003 ----A truck carrying factory equipment through Michigan has been given the largest fine for an overweight truck in the states history, The Adrian Daily Telegram reported March 13.
The truck was fined $57,685.
The New Jersey truck, which was bound for Ohio, weighed in at 480,000 pounds, about 320,000 pounds more than its legal weight. In addition, it was permitted for 16 feet wide, but it was 18 feet 2 inches wide, law-enforcement officials told the newspaper.
If somebody would keep fining me I might lose that extra 20 lbs. :D
I agree Doc. Until i came to your comment i was about to give my weight,,196,,dang did i say that. ;D
