Title: Worst case of PC I've ever seen
Post by: thurlow on August 23, 2012, 11:59:53 AM
Didn't want to hijack the Ford 2N thread..........I'm getting my pond levee 'fixed' this week.  The pond was built in the mid-50s;  didn't live here then, but lived just down the road and watched it being built.  SWMBO'd and I built here in '73;  the levee was overgrown with trees, mostly willow,  when we moved in.  We just let nature take its course, 'til I quit farming and built a pavilion in the pond.  By that time, the levee was broken and there was about an acre of water left.   It had seemed that it had always leaked down over time.  Hired a fellow with a track hoe to clear the levee and repair the break.  He was supposed to then cut a keyway the length of the levee to stop the leakage.  I was out of town the day he was here, but he either didn't cut the keyway or did a poor job.  Well........this is one of the driest, hottest Summers on record (we're about 15 inches below normal for rainfall).  There was about 7 feet of water under the pavilion in March; now it sits high and dry.  Got a local contractor to come and fix the levee;  he showed up Monday with a D65 Komatsu and a 200 Hitachi trackhoe.  The plan was to knock the levee down almost to the water level (soil to be pushed off the back of the levee), dig a keyway, refill the keyway/rebuild the levee.  The soil for the new levee was to come off of a nearby hill, which was gonna require a dirt pan.  As we were looking, the contractor pointed out a couple of nearby knolls and said that they could be cleared off and the soil could be pushed to the levee with the dozer, which would be considerably cheaper.  The contractor also does some logging;  he pointed out 4 or 5 dead white oak and suggested that they be cut and hauled;  there were also several trees on the 2 knolls.  So........we wound up with 2 loads of logs, cut the keyway (can't tell from the picture, but it's about 8 ft wide and 12-15 ft deep).  There is a layer of blue mud (not soupy, but wet) running the length of the levee;  only way it can be there is if water has been seeping through the levee for the last 50-plus years.  Evidently the levee wasn't proberly cored when it was first built.  The contractor, the machinery operator and I all agree that this will fix my levee problems.  Oh, yeah...........the PC.  The logs are going about 100 miles up the road (last commercial mill in the county closed a couple of years ago).  The log truck driver was about 5ft 10in tall and weighed at least 400#.  The picture was tooken as he was throwing the straps over the trailer;  I couldn't post the one made when he bent over...........
