I recently came across an ad for free pine logs. I'm looking for white pine so I thought I would inquire. Well, there are some twenty really nice trees (18-24" at the base, 60-80ft long) recently cut and about 30 minutes from me. The only catch is that they are on an island. It would be my responsibility to bring them to the water (50-100ft away) and haul them by boat to a public access to the lake and then home. So, I'm trying to figure out if this is worthwhile to attempt. From the pictures, the logs are very nice (straight and clear).
Suggestions?
There is a thread on here somewhere of someone that tied logs together in a big raft then pulled them with a boat.
Member Quebecnewf logs off an island all the time. He is helped sometime (or hindered ??) with snow and ice, but he gets the job done (as it is his only option if he wants logs).

More work I guess, but not a lot more actual cost to transport.
Logs have been moved by floating or rafts for hundreds of years, not so common these days, but it will still work now. Assuming you have a boat and some way of getting the logs in and out of the water?
It's something I'd be tempted to try just for the heck of it. ;D

Can you wait until winter? They logged the 1 square mile island on my parents lake a decade or so ago. Just drove the log trucks across the ice when it was a couple feet thick.
Seems like a lot of extra work for some average pine logs.
Sometime's its more of a adventure if you have the time and money!
Need a way to get them to the water without tearing up the ground too. Or maybe Toleda don't have laws like that?
A boat trailer with rollers and a winch on front sounds like it would be pretty easy to put the logs in and out of the water. I guess you'd still need a boat launch and a boat to pull them. Take some pictures for us if you grab them. Good luck.
Getting the logs out of the water seems like the easy part. I was thinking of bringing my Kubota with FEL. I have the means to haul that myself.
Although the shore of the island has no cliffs, the owner tells me that it is quite rocky. My most difficult job may be to get the logs to the water.
The next issue is that I would have to borrow someone's boat. I'm decent with the canoe, but it would take a while to bring a log across the lake that way... Probably it's a better idea to ask some friends.
If I wasn't in such a need for them I would wait until winter. And maybe I will have to do that in the end. The closest available pine seems to be 3.5 to 5 hrs away. Hauling them was going to cost me $150-200 per 1000bft.
I'll certainly take some pictures. Although my wife will say that I don't need it, it would provide the evidence of what a crazy fool I can be sometimes. But I do enjoy a little adventure...

What we want usually outweighs what we need. Add in the challenge and some adventure and your wife might as well start making the sandwiches. ;D
I understand your need of logs now, but this is sounding more like a really good winter project. One that could be planed out to minimize cost to you and have less damage to the shore from logs entering and exiting the water. A snowmobile or ATV can handle those logs in the winter, a cone or sled would work fine.
Maybe you need a logrite Junior arch or fetching arch?
