Title: Bangor,ME Northern Forest Expo,May17-18 2013
Post by: thecfarm on January 02, 2013, 01:22:01 PM
This is in Bangor Maine,May 17-18 2013.

http://www.nefpexpo.net/Bindex.htm

Last time I checked there was no times on the website. I contacted Northernlogger and they told me Friday 9-5 and Sat 9-4.

I just want to get it out there early so all of you that work outside your homes can sign up for a vacation day and go. All sorts of sawmills being shown off,the last couple years there has been a 1000 hp chipper in use. Lots of chainsaw, skidders, small wood lot equipment to check out. Big trucks and small ones.
I will be taking the Hammond Street exit,I think it's 183.Says Hammond Street on the exit.Much easier than exit 182A.Four years ago I wasted time in traffic.Once I got on to Main St I went by everyone and turned around and came in the way I am going this year.I went up there this winter and tried it.Worked great.Hammond runs right into Main.Do a google. There is ALOT of traffic coming in from the South, not much at all from the North.

Count me in! 8)  Might go both Fri and Sat. ;D  For those of us not used to such equipment those chippers are just insane!  Wish Lucas or Peterson were going to be there. :(

Yep,party at thecfarm. I will have to get the Magicman's recipe for his chicken.  :D :D I will go Friday to avoid the crowd. Than I would like to bring the Grandson up on Saturday.

John, hang in there for the swinger guys. Somtimes they go by a diffeant name too. Like the guy I brought my Heatmor OWB from. I saw his name there as Best Way Wood Heat. No mention of Heatmor at all.

Ya but no grits allowed  :D

I just emailed JS Woodhouse as I noticed they would be one of the vendors, I asked them if they will be bringing a supply of Split-Fire woodsplitters with them to the show, and if so, if there are any show specials for them.   8)

Ask them to bring one with an electric cord too. I saw one 4 years ago there. seemed so odd no noise, but it was splitting wood. I liked that.

That's where I saw/found out about them, Matt. 8)  I'm 20-25min from the show if you want to see mine in person. :)  You too, of course, Ray. ;D

I usually go on Fridays, and I have already marked my calendar to go that day. We'll have to meet up at sometime of the day and get another group picture of FF members at one both some place.

I don't think JS Woodhouse will sell to the public. You have to go thru an equipment dealer.

True.  I got my Split-fire through the local Massey dealer, who (obviously) got it from Woodhouse.  But I found out about Split-fires from seeing them at Woodhouse's 'tent' at the expo.  If only I had the cash to buy all the cool 'little things' at that show.... :( ::) :)

In the past, you signed up ahead of time and they sent out an entry pass free.  I will be looking to get a pass for this year as I plan on going if the clouds and stars line up.  :D

I think you can now, Yes,they will send you the pass. But I always print out the page. Not just so I can save the $7 ?? it cost to get in,so I don't have to stand in line. I signed up a friend less than 2 weeks before the show. They hung onto the pass and he picked it up in the Fastlane.  ;D Just think up a name for your "business" I will put down "the Boss" for the Grandson pass. He'll like that. If there was Tractor Driver I would put that in. He likes to drive, but does not like to get off the tractor.

All I can think of is the McDonalds across the road from the expo. You know the area better than most. Gates open up at 9 right? I don't want to be late for the show.

Actually Ray it looks like they changed the 'rules'.  It used to be you had to have a company name on your name tag but I noticed they made that optional this year.

As for breakfast I say we skip it and just grab lunch from one of the vendors. ;D

As far as lunch goes, you can pay $10 for a hamburger at a show vendor, or walk down the hill to McDonald's and get a drink and fries with a burger for $5......
I'll walk down the hill. I know I can use the walk.....

I just went and saw that John. pre registration is free now. No need for a company name. That is good. I'll still have The C Farm on my tag.The times that I went only 2-3 food vendors were there. Quite a line to get food.

I just registered.  Looking forward to it.

I'll probably just pack a lunch in my old metal lunch box just like I was heading into the woods.  Too darn frugal to pay ten bucks and too much to see to wait in line I reckon...

All registered, did me,the wife and grand son. No tractor driver for him this year. No option to put in what I want.I got the confirmation in my email.
One year I went with a guy from work,he is a Lab Tech there. I put Lab tech on his badge. Should of heard some ask him,Lab Tech, what's that.  :D  I had fun with it.

April 24th is the latest for free registration I noticed. Maybe people was complaining about the long line.

I did a little recon mission the other day to double check my memory.  For those of you coming up or down 95, I would suggest using exit 183 (Hammond St) not 182.  IMHO it a much more hassle free way to go.  Those coming from the south you take an immediate right off the off ramp onto Norway Rd (from the north, just cross over the over pass then take Norway).  Stay on Norway until the stop sign (a couple of blocks with a small park on the left).  Take a Left at the sign, go two streets over and take a right onto Buck St. (Mountainview Ave is the other street you will pass).  Just follow Buck until you see the expo parking signs on the right (back side of the raceway/horse paddocks).  Right, Left, Right, Right...easy peasy! ;D

All that being said, thecfarm (Ray) and I are planning on meeting at the Micky D's on Main St for breakfast.  Hopefully some of you others can join us?  Between 7:30 - 8 Ray?  Too early?  You can still follow the above directions, just take Buck down to the light and take a left (that's Main St.).

Anyway...the McDonalds is down the street a bit, I'd say a half mile (maybe less) from the expo parking, on the left next to what used to be Millers Restaurant (now called Seasons).  A lot has changed in Bangor (or that area at least) in just the two years since the expo was last here.  I'm pretty sure the McDonalds was on the river side then! :o  I'm looking forward to the next expo in two years in the new auditorium.  ;) :D

See y'all there!  And NO, the Micky D's does not serve g--ts! ;D :D

7:30-8 sounds good to me. I will have my suspenders on and my FF hat. Thanks for the recon at McDonald's too. You did good.  :D And,yes,McDonald's was on the right, riverside at the last expo. I drove through there last winter. I guess I was too busy looking at Paul Banyon. I suppose the casino took all that over.

I'm not sure that I can make it to the place for breakfast. So we should plan on another meeting place for lunch or around lunch time.
Can we meet at the logrite booth at lunchtime?
We usually do something like that.
We'll have to find out if they are going to be having their own booth or in with someone else.
Hopefully they'll post it.
Or we'll have to ask.

Ray, do you mean the lot behind the Irving?  I don't think that's an option but I'm not sure.  I'm going by later today, I'll try to see if it's open.  (Thinking it is being used by the construction folks.)  The new auditorium butts right up to Paul and is completely fenced off.  I'm guessing ppl could park in the casino garage if they wanted to.  Like Snowstorm I just go up Buck St and park on the infield.  It's pretty easy on Friday not sure what it's like on Sat.

Jim, if I could afford the consultation fee I'd have you stay an extra day and have you out to the house to help figure out my plan of attack on my old (timberframe) farmhouse.  Twisted/rotted grits, bad sills, sagging roof, wonky field stone foundation, you name it I got it. ;D  I'll start a post on the timberframe section when I get closer to diving into it.  I digress...I like the lunch time meet up idea.  Logrite should have their own booth, at least they did last time.  Or the WM one or...(dare I suggest it ??? :-\ ;)) the Peavey booth. ;D

JohnM and all: On Thursday the 16th, I'll be traveling to VT to go to a school teaching timber framing that week/day; to offer our tools for sale to the students there. And then traveling home Thursday night. I won't have time to unload the tools before I head to Bangor on Friday morning. So they will be with me. Just saying, if anyone would like to view what we have you'd be welcome to walk out to the parking lot with me and see.

I would love to take a look at least Jim, if not buy anything that day.  Can't afford anything major (my mill comes first! ;))) but I can start getting an idea of what I'll need down the road.  It's (timberframing) something I've always wanted to do but have never taken the steps to learn about.

One week to go. 8)

Sounds like nice weather for the expo. Looks like me alone on Saturday. The Grandson is not doing good in school, again. :(  The parents told him that he has to do better, homework wise. He did not,so there goes the Expo.  :'(

Wise parents.
Good for them, but sorry you don't get the enjoyment of the two of you at the Expo.

Yep, I'll be there Ray and at Logrite at noon(ish).  :)

Hey, there was a write up on the expo in the weekly little newspaper we get in the mail around here (it's called The Weekly...who'd da thunk it?!!).  The director of the expo said "I think the exhibitor who's come the furthest to this show is a portable sawmill manufacturer from Australia."   :o  Lucas?!  Dare I hope?! :D  They are not on the exhibitor list but I don't of any other manufacturers down there.  Know of several from NZ but not Aus.  We'll see soon enough!

Well, I left thecfarm and JohnM in the parking garage, late Friday afternoon, after we looked for a few minutes at some tools, and went into the hotel to use the bathroom.

Shortly after that, I headed home.

I didn't get too far, about 40 minutes drive, and all of a sudden I hear this POP and the tach on the dash goes dead. Rolled to a stop at mile marker 116 south bound on I95 just north of Augusta, ME.

Called AAA and got a tow. Nice guy and his gal in a ramp truck hauled my broke down SUV up and off the highway.

They drove me to a local Best Western and I stayed overnight, as the mechanic at their shop would be in at 8 am to look at my truck to see was was wrong.

At 7:15 am I called another tow company that I had done business with in the past and asked them for a quote of what it would cost for them to come up and get me. The called me back shortly thereafter and said $600. Wow, that was out of the question.

I called another guy that I'm suppose to saw his logs this week and left him a message that I needed a ramp truck rescue. And he hasn't called me back yet.

At 7:30 am I started walking to the garage that was on the other side of the highway about 1.5 miles away.

I got there just a bit after 8 am and the mechanic was working on my truck. He told me he had already had it running. Wow, what a relief that was to hear. I figured I was home free.

Well, he continued to say it didn't run very long and died.

He had checked the fuel line/system to make sure it was getting fuel as I thought maybe it was the fuel pump again. I lost that last summer on a Sunday and it kind of acting like the same thing.
He said I had plenty of fuel.

He figured it was the coil and the electronic module right next to the coil. He seemed to think that it was getting too hot and when it gets hot it shuts down. Let it cool off and it starts back up again.

So he went down back to the junk cars and trucks and got one out of a "parts" vehicle back there.
We put that one in and he let it run in his driveway for 30 minutes. Ran fine and he figured it was all set.

I asked him should I go down the road the 1/4 mile to the local Autozone and get a new coil to have with me for the ride home, just in case. He said I couldn't install it out on the side of the road as you need to grind off the rivets and put in some bolts to install it properly in the holding bracket.
I asked him should I go down the road the 1/4 mile to the local Autozone and get a new electronic module to have with me for the ride home just in case. He said that I couldn't install that out on the side of the road either.

I should have gone down the road 1/4 mile and got them anyhow.

But I took his advice and off I went down the highway. The cost for his repairs, for putting in the old spare part coil and module was $50.

I got about 17 miles down the road and it died again. I was not happy at all. Only 22 minutes of travel and it was dead again.

I waited a while and it started up again. I drove another 25 minutes to another exit and got off to go to an auto parts store and get some fuel line cleaner to hopefully flush out any build up in my system that was causing it to run rough. Stopped and started the truck right up just like nothing was wrong.

I got less than 6 miles down the road and it died again. Rolled to a shady spot on the side of the highway off ramp heading for Route 1 south to find another auto parts store to buy a module and coil.
While sitting there I got to thinking that maybe it wasn't the coil or the module but the wires that go to these two things. So I got out and wiggled them around and unplugged them and plugged them back in a couple of times thinking that maybe the was a bad connections or something.

Got back in and it started right up like nothing was wrong. So off down route 1 I go trying to find another auto parts store.

Drove through Freeport and didn't see one any where. So, after about 10 miles and another 16 minutes, I finally found one just south of Freeport on route 1 a nice little Napa store.
Backed into shady parking spot and shut it off.

I when in with the original parts from my truck and after talking again with the mechanic at the tow garage, he said buy the module first. So $89 later I put it in and it wouldn't start.

Tow garage mechanic says it won't work unless it's grounded..... Back into the store. Do you have a wrench that will take off this little tiny bolt? that I can either borrow or buy?

Clerk says: "Let me see, 5 mm is too small, 6 mm is too big. 1/4" is too small, 5/16" is too big. Oh, that must be one of those weird 5 1/2 mm bolts, like on the Ford distributors."

Great a weird size bolt.
"Do you have any tool that will work for this?"

"Let me look it up in the book. Ok, I've got the part number, and the computer says we have one."

Out back, in from out back. "here it is." "You can use it if you want or you can buy it."

"I'll take it, how much?" " $8."

Now I mount the module like it's suppose to be attached to the bracket, all grounded and everything.

Won't start.

Back into the store.

"Have you got one of these coils?"

"Yes."

"How much?" "$50."  "sold"

Hooked it up to the two wires. Try it, won't start.

Mechanic says, "it has to be grounded to work."

Take the $8 socket and rig up a bracket that came in the coil box and get the coil bolted to the module bolt and try it.

Started right up.

When inside to thank the counter guy and headed home.

Only got to go 90 more miles and about 1 1/2 hours to get home.

Arrive in yard at 3:30 pm. It took me 6 hours to go what should have been a 2 hour drive home.

Sunday morning, I ground the rivets off the bracket and mounted the coil correctly and so far all is working fine.

What a trip.

Wow!! :o  Good thing you didn't try that luck at the casino, Jim! ;) ;D :D  That's one of those 'sucks in the moment but makes a good story later' type events...or not.  :D :)

Thanks again for taking the time to show me the timberframe tools and I'll shoot you a note when find where that timberframe class is held that I was thinking of going to.  Crazy busy right now but I'm hoping to have road trip story of my own to share by the end of the weekend. ;)  (shh...don't tell Ray!! ;D)
