If there is enough interest, I would like to host a get together at our farm this spring for FF members.
I am thinking a cookout and mill demonstrations, or any other wood skill.
Ockrsfarmer is willing to bring his WM, we have the Lucas here, I can find a couple logs to play with!
There is a pond and plenty of camping space if any one wants, and of course it will be a family affair.
Any other ideas are welcome.
I am thinking the middle of May, weekend of 11th or 18th.
That's my broad idea, what think you?
Hi Seaman,
I would be interested if it comes to be.
Tee
Seaman - I'd like to come down from Spruce Pine, not very far at all.
David L.
Seaman, I meant to get back with you about that. I can do it any weekend except the 11th or 18th. :-\ We'll be leaving the 11th and coming back the 18th from a family vacation. The 25th would be good for me. What do you think?
I'd like to attend, but mid May is normally when I'm cutting hay (weather dependent) so I could not commit until a few days before the event.
I can make it I believe, most dates. I'd be happy to get together and meet everyone.
Okrafarmer
We will keep working on a date. 25th won't work i think, maybe June1.
Let me see how many are interested.
I would be interested in coming, but I have to work around harvesting hay also.
I think I could make it. It would be fun to put some faces with the names. Keep us posted!Brian

June 1 should be fine for me. :) Note: if there is anyone else closer to Seaman who has a bandmill and would like to bring it instead of me, that's fine too.
Agreed, I'm not picking on Okrafarmer, ..Pyrocasto maybe?
I'm in! Keep us posted on a date.
-lee
Shhhhhhhh.......I might slip off and head that way. smiley_horserider
I might try a day trip!
keep us posted on the date how far from Ashville are you?
tj
I will talk to the wife but I don't see an issue with it. It's always a good day when you make new friends and learn something at the same time.
Rob & Sarah
I'd definitely try to make it. Sounds like a good time.

Wow, that would be great! That's quite a trip to make.
I might add, if people are thinking of coming into the area from a long ways away, and have never had a chance to visit western North Carolina before, there are some really great things to see and do within a short drive of Seaman's place. He could probably tell you more about it than I can, but among other things, there is Chimney Rock and other great scenic mountain areas, the Cherokee reservation with many different attractions, and the Biltmore Estate, definitely worth visiting. If you're making a trip of it, there are plenty of great things to see. ;D
Okrafarmer is correct as usual, lots to do and see close to here.
Like I said , plenty of camping room, pond for the kids, or big kids, if you come from a distance you are welcome to camp for as long as you want. Several nice hotels within 20 min drive, and a local campground with cabins.
I would not be opposed to the burning of gunpowder if any felt led in that direction, 100yrd benches and pistol berm on site.
Sounds like a good time. Forestry Forum friends, food, sawmill, how can you not have a good time.
By the way, what will you have for food?
You really want me to answer that? ;D
If the menu is bread, meat and chesse, yes. What else is there to eat??? :D

We will make sure there is bread, meat, and cheese. Among other things. . . . ::)
You coming? ;D
The "other things" have me a little concerned about making the trip. :D
Oh good gracious! If people are partaking of southern delicacies nearby, that isn't going to turn you away is it? We aren't going to put them on your plate! That would be most unkind, and not very neighborly.
MEAT AND CHEESE AND BREAD on the menu. Southern delicacies available for those who might want them.
8)
I am most definitely interested in stopping by to make a few friends and maybe pick up a little knowledge from some of you more seasoned sawyers. I'm in Hendersonville, just 30 minutes at most from Asheville.
Okrafarmer, thank you of thinking of me.Even if there was no food being served or worst yet,a vegan picnic,if I was thinking about coming nothing would keep me away. Just a liitle bit far at this point and time. Have not been to see the step son in DC for a couple years and that is only a 10-12 hour drive.
I understand, cfarm! Well, it is a long trip. I used to do the Clinton, ME to Greenville, SC run in 21-23 hours. Seaman is about an hour northwest of me, and the trip is probably very similar in time.
Some part of a bovine I'm sure, and pork, and fixins, and....grits! 8)

Perhaps we could take up a gas money collection for anyone willing to pull their mill to the party. 8-10 MPG gets expensive in a hurry. :-\
This get together sounds like a great idea and once a date is settled on I will certainly make my best effort to get there and have a chance to meet everyone.
Thanks for the opportunity Skipper, look forward to meeting everyone.
Hey all,
If this ended up being weekend of June 15 or June 22 I will be in the area and would love to come. The "Southern Delicacies" won't keep me away!! ;)

:o So you're trying to get the "Longest Trip Award", eh? Anybody want to come from farther? Warbird? Ianab? :D
Starting to sound like it's gonna take a BIG pot of grits to feed everyone!
A largely portioned pot of gumbo might be in order. . . .
Along with the meat and bread and cheese.

Now if I make it, it will be pork sausage gumbo. If someone else makes it, who knows!
thinking of going to my buddys in ky in june would like to meet some of the people on the ff
I guess the sooner we decide a date the better. Any Saturday in June will work for me. I should be able to come up the Friday before, if need be, and help Seaman with any preparations. I only live about an hour or so away.
Lets go with the 1st of June, I know that will cut out a few folk, but no date will be perfect for everyone.
All are welcome to come up early or stay late if camping.
Now we can move on to important stuff like..... FOOD!
June 1 it is!
As for food, I will be willing to make a large pot of gumbo. But what other thoughts do people have for food? And I mean people who intend to attend. So, Thecfarm, if you are planning to come, we'll be happy to talk about your specific dietary needs. But if you're not coming-- we won't cook for you! :D :D :D
Seaman, do you have any thoughts about a main course, or should everybody try to bring something to share? What's the cooking situation like at your house?
I warn you, if I have to do ALL the cooking, it will end up being a pot of gumbo, and a mess of Finnish Air Force. For those of you who don't know what Finnish Air Force is, neither do I, until I do it. You can see a monologue about it if you search in the Food Food Food! section.
Okrafarmer, it really depends on how big a crowd we are talking about.
We have a gas cooker that will cook a pig, if those who know they are coming want to chip in, I can procure the appropriate amount of meat, 1/4 to 4/4, you and I can cook Fri night if you like. We can send someone to Ingles for most of the sides.
Those who want to camp, if any, will be on their own for other meals.
Cooking will be done at the mill with gas, fire or hot-air, which I can produce my share of. ;D
Okrafarmer,Can't make it this time. :D But put it in your recipe book, meat, bread and cheese. ;D You all have a great time planning, sawing, talking, cooking and eating.

Cfarm, I am quite capable of making a nice meat and cheese sandwich without any okra, grits, collards, broccoli, or mustard greens. Just let me know if you take mayonnaise, or anything like that.
For the rest of us-- roast pork and gumbo! Start registering, people! Tell how many you will bring! Sign me up for myself and 2-3 kids. Mrs. Okra is expecting a baby to be born in August, and I doubt she'll want to come. If she does, she won't eat much anyway, and neither will the additional toddlers.
Sign us up for
4 people.
Seaman, how much do you think would be an appropriate contribution for each person, for purchasing the victuals?
For those wondering if they really want to come, please consider that in addition to this, you will be within a few hours of some other really great things to see and do. It's not too far to Charlotte, Chattanooga, Bristol, Knoxville, Pigeon Forge, Hendersonville, Flat Rock, Chimney Rock, Table Rock, King's Mountain, and Greenville SC from there. All kinds of things to do in all those places. So if you want to make a trip of it, you can do a lot of things along the way, or on the way back. Many other things and places I can't think of, too, and beautiful mountain scenery. Within 100 miles of Seaman's house I believe you could find the majority of the species of trees found in eastern north America. Possibly excepting all those weird Florida-only trees from the total. ::)
I'm going to have to wait a few weeks before I can commit, but the plan right now is for me and my better half to come. Looks like we may be moving her 93 year old grandmother in with us about that time, and that's the possible hold up. Gotta take care of family first. So I'll be watching to see if this continues to develop and commit asap.
I dont know if I want to drive that far, that IS 45 minutes!!! :D :)
Count me in. June 1st, I'll keep my schedule clear if possible.
I been wanting to meet up with you anyway, Pyro. I talked to you on the phone once or twice.
Checking on the price for pig parts Okra, guess it will also depend on how many show. I certainly ain't looking to make money, but can't afford a bath either.
You bringing the kids up to camp? The pond will be nice by then.
I might just do that! Depending on weather, of course. Let's start counting noses. 4 for me, most likely.
4
I count 16 probables and 5 maybes
seaman count me for two, when you decide what our donation will be let us know and I will send my money wheather I come or not, waiting on a knee replacement from the va and you know how that goes,if I don't come orka can make an extra ham sanwich for some hungry soul, make it with mayo
I would like the oportunity to meet the southern half of the fourm hope you let swingers in.

Tj, I hope they find a replacement knee for you. Spare parts get harder to find the farther back the model was made. :-\
okra you know its like they say they don't make'm like they use to

That's for sure! If our young people from today (even including myself, though I can barely claim "young") had to go back to the way the world was 100 or 200 years ago, it would be a sorry sight indeed.
Just found this thread. How far would the gathering be from Franklin? My wife-to-be will be taking a honeymoon starting June 1st. She has relatives that have summer places in Franklin. Might be an excuse to come north instead of south to Florida. I prefer the mountains to the beach!

Yeah, I noticed that after I posted and didn't take time to correct it!
I'll be there too! :D
There's a fellow named Rex who contacted me about some turning stock, and he will be in the area that weekend, and he plans to be there at least part of the day. He also has been shown to the Forum. ;)
I find that to be around 21 definites and 5 or more probables.
Seaman, what time do you think we will start being "officially open for partying / etc?" Are you thinking like 8 AM, or what? Also Rex would like to know your address (you can PM to me if you don't want to make it public access, but everyone else coming will need to know too).
Rex, if you're out there, Have you learned how to post on the Forum yet?
I'm here and I will stop in. All I need are the dates and times. I'll also bring some home cooked that my mom has volunteered!
RexBrad,a new member and he's willing to help all ready. You will fit right in. ;D
All,
Address is
438 Walker Dr
Old Fort NC 28762
Any time that day will be fine. If Okra , (and anyone else who wants) comes up to camp, we will be doing breakfast for the kids fairly early I'm sure.
You guys can show up whenever.
Do we need a Porta-John? I think it's about $75 bucks for the weekend. If ladies are coming, be a good idea I think.
Seaman and Okra
Had put in a possible early on. Looks like I will not be able to attend. I hope weather is great and look forward to pictures and stories.
Hmm, now Mrs. O is actually talking about coming along and bringing all kids. But if we do that, we A. won't easily be able to bring the sawmill and B. won't easily be able to stay overnight. I could come up Friday and help you get ready and go home for the night, and then come up in the morning with the fam, but then I can't help you watch the pig all night. . . .
Hmm, trying to figure it out.
Hello RexBrad, and Welcome to the Forestry Forum. smiley_gossip digin1 digin_2
Magic, you're "a traveling man." Are you going to travel on over here?
Okra,
Not to worry about the pig cooking overnight. We have a friend in the high-end catering business and we are talking to him about barbeque with all the fixins. Not locked in yet, but probable. will let you know more later.
We can find someone with a WM I'm sure. Don't fret, it will all work out
I can still make my gumbo if you want. It will include southern specialities. ;D
Okra, I hope so! My wife loves gumbo! ;)
Our guy is going to fix a meat (pork) 3 sides, and a desert for us to pick up Fri. We will warm it up Sat.
It will be $10 a plate, which I don't think is bad. I hope others will bring any specialty they wish, to add variety. You can pay while you are here, no need to complicate it with mail-ins.
Bring your own coolers, if you are camping, drink whatever you want in the evening.
There will be NO alcohol, during the day, while equipment is running! That's fair enough I think.
The pond is here for all to enjoy, and camping like I said.
Hope to see a lot of you, I will need to know by May 15th a total number. If a few of you can come at the last minute, that is fine too. I just need a pretty good count for the food.
Look forward to a good day!
Frank
Hi Frank,
Well I was the first to post and looks like I'll be on of the last before your 15th date. I still plan to be there here in a couple weekends and looking forward to it!
At the last minute -- I'll be there also.
David Larson
Sounds good, guys! can anybody else come?
Seaman
I hope you guys have a great time over your Gettogether Weekend, I finally got a schedule together for my trip back there and unfortunately for me I will not be able to attend your event. I wont get to Elizabeth City till the 15th of June so my timing is way off, Have fun we will all be looking forward to some pictures and hearing about your neat event.
Mrs. O is gathering ingredients for our hog sausage gumbo!
Yumm Yumm. Looking good on my end, Do we need a port-a-potty for the ladies?
I will get a head count tonight and figure up food
Bring a chair!
Okra, you guys camping?
I have counted 14 that seem to be in.
Please let me know if you will be by yourself or a larger number.
Thanks, Frank
I have Okra for four, and TJ for two

Ok, I'll see everybody tomorrow! I'm gathering gumbo ingredients!
Will the meal be early afternoon or late afternoon?
Does Google Maps give good directions coming from Asheville?
Seaman - I had hoped to attend your WNC get-together tomorrow, but an unexpected house guest suddenly arrived just now, at midnight (can you believe it?) so at the last minute I have to regretfully stay home tomorrow. Here's hoping you all have a great time tomorrow. I apologize for this last-minute cancellation.
David Larson, in Spruce Pine
David, that's fine, you are close enough to come any time!
We're getting everything put together. Hope to be there around 10:30 or so. ;D
We were up later than usual last night so we didn't get a very early start. :-\
Oh, my, what a day! I think Pyrocasto took some pictures to prove it happened. Unfortunately, my phone camera doesn't do too well these days, so I didn't take any pictures. I think we all had a good time, I know I did, and the kids did, and even Mrs. Okra seemed to enjoy herself!

I sure did enjoy myself--once I got over the motion sickness from the roller coaster ride up the mountains! Seaman's wife took some pics, so I'm waiting for them to be posted.
Thanks to all who came to our little shindig. We did have a good time, and I enjoyed meeting each of you.
I learned a few things from others, and hope a few learned something here. The meal was great, thanks TJ and wife for the pork, and Okra and wife for the Gumbo!
Ended up setting around till about midnight talking with Tee, Pyrocasto, and a couple of old school local millers. One of whom is 81 I think and started at a sawmill when he was 16. Still cuts on a Frick he bought in 1961!
Look forward to doing it again!
