Remember the corner drug store where you went in - sat down & got a cherry fizz coke?? That's what I relate to a independently owned and operated bandmill operator. The $million and $billion dollar sawmill operations I relate to the Super Walmarts that don't have cherry fizz cokes @ all , but have their own brand labels @ the lowest prices on the planet. Well, It's great to go into a super walmart & get things cheap 24 hours a day , but I sure miss strolling into the corner drug store and the cherry fizzes and sweet Betty Jo who made those extra thick shakes , with a sprinkle of pecans or walnuts and a cherry on top. With few exceptions , it should be a crime for a $million/$billion dollar mill to cut a piece of cherry, pecan, or walnut etc. Their heart's not really in it. PS. I Married BettyJo =
I am going to the drug store all the while too, Bud Man. Mine's name is Alice. She ran the college center and all of the student activities when we got married. She could operate any of the machines including the soda fountain. One addition while she was on that watch was the establishment of a "Sweetshoppe". I spent a great deal of time there! ;) When I began taking her to the woods to work, she adapted at a vary rapid rate. She turned out to be the best darn chocker setter I ever skidded for. she could have a turn set so fast I had a swet worked up before the first hour was old. :D :D I reckon that is why I got into the sawmilling end of the industry. She was just to hard to work for. 8) 8) 8)
Well, I liked Vanilla Cokes better than Cherry Cokes. And their grilled hamburgers (35 cents) couldn't be beat....and I know what you're talking about. Big corporations are interested in assembly line type production that cuts down on the time and product to produce something. So, all the frilly stuff that takes a little more time gets eliminated and a generation later, people think that's the way it's supposed to be. I like buying lumber from small mills, but I'm glad the big mills exist so we can get the construction lumber at a decent price. :)
I guess we need both big and little operations to conserve and manage the forests. Sometimes, I think we could all stand to stop and look at how we are doing things and smell the roses a little bit. ;D
By the way, down in Mountain View, Arkansas, they have a remake of the old Drug Store and you can still get all of your favorite sodas, burgers and fizzes. It is wonderful. 8)
Well, DanG, PD! I was in Mountain View a couple of years ago, and I didn't see it. I'll have to go back and try again. That is some beautiful country!!! 8)
Dan, it sits about one block from the town square going west.
If you get back up that way, it is worth trying. In fact, I think I may plan a trip soon.
