Title: Mesquite bugeyes

Seriously, they are pretty big, about 1 1/4 to 1 1/2" long. I think they are kind of cool looking. Never seen them thick enough to really be a problem with the trees. They do make the pods taste bitter where they have sucked on them.

Mesquite pods. Sort of an aquired taste. Sort of starchy/sweet unless the bugs bite them. Hard chewing after they get dry. Best when they are still moist, but have turned yellow. These have been a desert staple for thousands of years. They can be ground into a rather mealy flour. They contain extra protein from all the included dermestid beetle larvae. Yum.
