Title: Oak and Maple - lots of pics
Post by: Keystone31 on September 18, 2013, 09:56:03 PM
These are a few logs my uncle had dropped off for me to mill. The first four I did a couple of weeks ago. Didn't realize until I sat down that I don't have a photo of the next 8 maple I started on today. Had some spalting and coloration in the first two of them.
Here's the first four - two oak, two maple.

Big oak on the mill

One of the small maples cut into 3"x4"s for table legs

The stack cut up as lumber. 4 - 3"x3"s and 3 - 3"x4" maples. Oak 1x16"s and 1x12"s with four 3x4"s oak.

First big maple that I started in on today.

First big maple, second cut

My yield: 11 1x12"s

Second log (on deck in above pic) hit a nail on the last face to make the cant. If it wasn't for a noticeable spark, I wouldn't have known it was there.

Got 'er pulled. First hardware!

Cut three 1x8"s before deciding it had too much damage to continue. Will get 8 1x8"s out of it.

More to come this weekend!

Looks like somebody is having fun.  ;D 8) 8) 8) 8)   Are you going to make stuff from the lumber?

Nice looking lumber.   :)

When I hit a nail I pull the blade.  Sometimes they may cut longer, but the blade has been compromised and I pull it.

Me too. It is a rare deal where it still cuts straight. Even then, it is dulled. :(

That all looks good. Looking forward to more pictures this weekend.

We always pull the blade when we strike metal in a log!

Sometimes there isn't much damage, but usually after a strike at the least, some of the teeth are out of set!

Jobs done! These are what logs I had left since I posted last. Finished up with 467.81 bf in all.

Had a little rot in one of the small logs

I liked the streak this one had in it.

I'm currently charging $0.25 bf for anyone else's logs. That's way more lumber than I would be able to go through in a long time.

Since the lumber is not stickered, I am assuming that it will be picked up by a customer....soon.

He actually get's free delivery since he lives next door. Only having a Kuboter L3800, it takes a couple trips. Typically is same day, but it was pouring down rain until well after dark.

Looks like you'll be shoveling sawdust soon!  Nice mill setup and good logs to mill.  Doesn't get much better! smiley_thumbsup

It really is a great set-up; a little restricting, though. We actually built the barn after the mill. I'll eventually get a picture up of the whole building - all lumber cut from the mill. A few problems: You can't fit 14' logs through the door. With the deck, as handy as it is, it's a pain to pull boards off. You also need to carry the between the carriage and post and deck unless you want to crack it up and push it back first. You can't fit anything more than 7' through the barn door next to where it's stacked in the pictures.

I also want to get a stationary dust vac in there. I'll be pulling the lap siding jig out soon. My dad bought it when Norwood had a massive clearance on them, but it's still never been used. Gonna cover that plastic up with it before there's too many more hole in it.

Also: I'm not stickering anything that I cut for just $0.25/bf. Is that bad business?

Yes, please show pictures of the building.  I'm new to this so a cut list for the building if you have it would be cool too.

Nice pics
Austin

25 cents a board ft sounds to me like you are giving your service away.

That's what I charge for your logs if you drop them off. Regardless of specie. Is that still low? No stickers, no sweeping of sawdust, or anything like that. I'll keep them off the ground and out of the rain. Since I'm just doing this for family and friends and not the general public, I'm still working on upcharges. But I plan on starting a whole new topic on that later on when I come up with a more proper business model.

I'll be sure try to come up with a materials list. We don't have one, but I can do a real quick estimate in about an hour doing dimensions and rafter material. Sounds like something to do this weekend while I'm doing maintainence.
