Title: Making a 262 out of a 261
Post by: Maine logger88 on December 08, 2013, 10:31:35 PM
I just picked up a 261 on eBay  to turn into a 262xp for an evening project from what I understand I need a 262 piston clutch and muffler to make a 262 is this correct?

If you change to the 3 shoe 262 clutch, you're also going to need the spacer washer. (I can look it up tomorrow if you need.) The 2 shoe clutch has an offset and so doesn't require the washer.

If you want a little more snap, use the base gasket from a 254 which is 1mm vs the 2mm gasket that you have in the 261. Part number is 503704801.  :)

I've done several conversions without changing the clutch. The two shoe seems to hold up fine. I would just run it and if it fails, then spend the $45 to replace it.

The muffler is also different. But it is fine as is if you do a little bit of mod work. Open the existing opening inside the can and enlarge the slot on the front.\

I picked up a 261 this weekend and it will be a 262 in short order.

OK thanks guys my cousin may have a blown up 262 I could get off him for parts cheap which would be good spike if you get a chance to I would like to know what the spacer is in case I can't get my cousins saw. so the 254 gasket will give it a little better compression? nmurph so by doing a little grinding the 261 muffler will work just as good as a  262? So I'm assuming that these saws are a closed port?

Surely, but with those shortcuts it doesn't really become a 262xp, just a 261 with 262xp engine performanse... :D :D

Using that logic, nothing will make it a 262 short of a new SN plate. I think the idea is to have 262 performance...that's all that matters to the tree.

Agree w/nmurph I too have several down to 4.  Meteor 262 piston is all you really need.  The 2 shoe clutch will be fine.  I have done 7 of these conversions for the record.  I have 2-3 shoe clutches but why bother if the 2's work just fine.

Piston is obviously the most important followed by the muffler. Changing the clutch is not really necessary. If it fails, then by all means upgrade to the 3 shoe. But if it's OK, then just leave it on there. It'll be fine.

That's a super score. How many times have you been back to check that dumpster?  :)
