Title: NFL Playoffs 2013-2014
Post by: POSTON WIDEHEAD on January 04, 2014, 08:43:08 PM
My hat's off to the Indy Colts for an exciting game on a cold, boring Saturday.
28 points down and they came back to win against K.C. WOW!

The Miami Dolphins could have done that if we had a whole new team, coaching staff and ownership. ;)

Wasn't all that exciting for me, but all in all a very entertaining game. Chiefs did much better than I expected considering all the injuries.

Or you could move to Charlotte, the Panthers have done really well this season. Cam Newton is turning into a great Quarterback. Of course, Rock Hill is just over the SC line from Charlotte, so that would put you into Dave's territory.

49ers against the Packers is going to be a good one.  The cold is going to be a factor.  Frozen fields feel like concrete to play on.  It is going to be unpredictable.

Rogers played his Jr College ball at Butte college only an hour to the south of us.   I am a die hard 49er fan but the Packers are next in line.  Too bad both can't go to the big game.
Title: Re: NFL Playoffs
Post by: SLawyer Dave on January 05, 2014, 02:11:13 AM
I remember watching Aaron Rogers play in High School, (he played for the cross-town rivals).  He was good, but man, never saw how good he was going to be.  I was really hoping that the 49ers were going to take Aaron Rogers when he was in the draft.  Alas, they chose Alex Smith instead, and while a capable quarterback, he will never be an elite quarterback.

I think it is going to be very difficult for the 49ers to win this game.  Not only the weather and that they are on the road, but this would be their 4th win in a row over the Packers in the last 18 months, (2 on the road and 2 at home).  That is a level of dominance that is very hard to achieve in the NFL.  Even the hated Sea Hawks lose when they come to Candlestick.  So I will be extremely happy if the 49ers win, but won't be surprised if they don't.

I take full credit for the Colts' comeback.  We tuned into the game right when they were 28 points down.  They proceeded to get 2 TD's and never looked back.  They were just waiting for the Mrs and I to show up.  LOL ;D

One team will win and one will lose, in spite of the weather. (maybe when they flip the game coin, they both will decide to call it a tie and go home   ;D )

Apparent temp taking into account the 7pm temp of 3 deg F, will be minus 16 according to NOAA
That is compared to -41 in MPS, and -56 in northern MN.  Prolly colder in Canada for our neighbors there who don't talk about it a lot.

Hate....what I HATE is the fact that I can't even watch the 49ers game because of the continuing feud between Fox and Dish Network.  The only 49er game I have been able to watch in the last month was the Monday night game.

So I either have to go down to a sports bar to watch the game, (and I don't even drink), or I get to sit and listen to the radio broadcast.  It's probably just as well though....the grandkids are visiting this weekend, and I don't need to expand their vocabulary any more than it already is.   ;)

And I was just contemplating switching to Dish. Guess I'll stick to DirecTV.

And not that I wanted to watch the 49er's  ;D

And with the lousy game callers, I usually watch most NFL games on the Yahoo game channel.

What's up with the Fox vs Dish thing?  I have Dish and we get all of the Fox channels. That game was on my TV.  ???

To be more precise, it apparently depends on who is "reselling" the local network affiliates.  Your local stations have a right to broadcast the signal, and the Satellite providers then have to pay a third party who resells that network signal to the satellite.  So depending on where you live, and who is your reseller, that determines if the local "feed" is blacked out.  The two resellers DISH is fighting with are Bonten Broadcasting and Esteem Broadcasting, which happens to be both my local ABC and Fox resellers.  I normally wouldn't notice or care since I watch very little network TV, but I do miss watching my 49ers.  My wife called DISH and ranted about how, "Her husband was coming apart at the seems because he can't watch the 49ers and wants to change to a different provider", (which I swear is not true).  She did get them to cut our bill in half however, so I thought it was well played by her.

So no, did not get to watch the game, but listened to it on the radio.  Then I went to the 49ers website and watched the highlights.  It was a great game.  I was 'mildly disappointed', (don't want Jeff censoring my posts),  :)  that the 9ers had to settle for field goals on their first two possessions, until I got to see the highlights.  Sheesh, the refs weren't calling any penalties at first.  Even the highlight announcers were shocked at what the refs allowed.  Holdings, take downs, no wonder the 9ers couldn't move the ball after getting in the red zone.

Anyways, both a little surprised, but very happy that the 9ers pulled out the win.  Like I said, beating any NFL team 4 times in a row, let alone a great team like the Packers, is really rare.  It won't get any easier with Carolina, (though it should be warmer at least).  Since Harbaugh became coach, no team has beaten the 9ers twice in a row.  So hopefully, that trend will continue.

I thought this was pretty funny......on our news just now, they said when it looked like the Packers had a chance to win and move on to play the Panther's....phones in Charlotte were ringing off the booking Rooms in the Hotels.

Then all of a sudden when the Packers lost....cancelations one after the other.

Then the phones went to ringing again from the 49er fans. As of now......Charlotte's all booked up.

My sister lived in Colorado Springs for about 30 years and she is a big Denver fan. They don't have pay TV, so whenever the Broncos are playing on ESPN or the NFL channel she will call us up and say, "I'm coming over to watch the game. Is that alright?" Luckily the playoffs are on network TV. I'm hoping the 49ers go all the way, but the Seahawks are tough this year.

I suffered through a feud between the cable company in Blountstown Florida and the ABC station in Panama City for most of the college football season. {most of the FSU games were on ABC} Then just as the season winds down, they have it back on the air. Now that football is over and basketball has started, it's a different challenge. Since the Noles are not as big a name in hoops, their games are carried on the also ran channels. There will be a few games where I listen on the radio.

This David is very happy.   :)   :D   ;D   8)

Denver is my preference also....but my only real concern is the 49ers beating the flying fish.

Honestly, did any of you hear about the Seahawks deciding to restrict selling game tickets for the Divisional Playoff to anyone using a credit card based in California and a few other states where they feel 49ers fans might try to attend from?   All so that they can protect their "12th Man".  I can't believe the NFL doesn't have a policy against that.  That's taking "home field advantage" to a new low.  I remember when the NFL used to penalize teams when the fans interfered with the game, now it is part of the design for new stadiums.

I wonder what the NFL is going to do when they start getting sued by both players and the general public for hearing loss due to these types of games?

The ticket selling to rival states has been going on for years. Denver dose it As well as others. If the noise bothers opposing team fans that go to Quest field to watch there team play the ( flying fish) BRING EAR PLUGS   Seattle Seahawks joined the NFL in 1975 They played in a concrete Dome called the King Dome. that was just as loud as these games played at Quest field. Seahawks have always had the 12th man noise.

The national anthem was a class act for sure.   The Division Championship games should be played at a neutral site like the Superbowl.   That would end the fan stacking tactic.

It will be a good game.  The 9ers have a tough row to hoe but they are also peaking at the right time of the season.

Dish Network just announced the local channel dispute has ended so it feels line the planets are beginning to line up.

Go 9ers.

The drama of it all! So now, bad boy Sherman reportedly scolds Hawks fans for throwing food on injured '49er while being carted away to hospital..for crying out loud! So suddenly Sherman has love for 49ers?

More sour grapes...Pat Coach Belichick accuses Bronco's Welker of cheap shot to hurt his CB Talis and put him out of game.....they wear pads don't they?

A wide receiver's dream is to take out a DB, (especially against the team who let you go) they usually take the brunt of it. Sherman isn't really like that, but he made some Bronco fans with his rant. Go Hawks

I feel this way too.

Superbowl  Sunday  From a Marine Corps Colonel in Afghanistan: (may or may not be true)
Quote"So with all the kindness I can muster, I give this one piece of advice to the next pop star who is asked to sing the national anthem at a sporting event:  save the vocal gymnastics and the physical gyrations for your concerts.  Just sing this song the way you were taught to sing it in kindergarten - straight up, no styling, no screeching.   "Sing it with the constant awareness that there are soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines watching you from bases and outposts all over the  world.  Don't make them cringe with your very self-centered ego gratification.  Sing it as if you are standing before a row of WWII vets wearing their Purple Hearts, Silver Stars and  flag pins on their cardigans and you want them to be proud of you for honoring them and the country they love - not because you want them to think you are a super-super star musician.   They could see that from your costume,  makeup and your large entourage.  Sing 'The Star Spangled Banner'  with the courtesy and humility that tells the audience that it is about America, not you.   We're getting a little weary of your own rendition.  Francis Scott Key does not need any help."      Semper Fi !

I have often stated the same sentiment.  When the National Anthem is sung, they are not entertaining.  A responsibility has been placed in their voices to honor the song that they are singing and the Country that they are singing to.  It should be done correctly and respectfully.

Here's my vote for the singing of the national anthem.  From my perspective, they do it properly.

This was done at the NASCAR races on several occasions.

Renee Fleming, opera singer.  I'm curious to hear how she sings it - I agree with others, leave out the personalized 'yodelling' (as I call it) and sing it straight!

Nothing better than good defense...but something to ponder...what if....they hadn't messed up the coin flip and the 'Hawks got the ball first? Everything played to the 'Hawks favor, but once they shut down the Bronco's running game, they also shortened Manning's field too. Bronco's played like they just came from a pizza party.

Quotemessed up the coin flip

How so?  Manning (with his jump-around antics before getting the ball from center) messed up on their first play, turning the ball over, plus a couple points, to the Hawks.
How did the coin flip get messed up?   I missed that.

Well..if you saw Joe Willie flip the first coin toss the Ref caught it in mid-air. I think the Ref said they had forgot to call who wanted heads or tails. So, they flipped it again..50-50- chance the choice would have been the other way with the 'hawks getting the kick-off.

May have reduced the blow-out by two points.

Not going to happen with this team. Payton Manning makes more per game than Wilson and Sherman make for the year, and you don't hear them complaining or upsetting the team. This is a team of 5th and 7th round picks that had something to prove, and bought into Pete's philosophy. Some places, the guy at the top thinks its all about him, but this was a team effort, and will be. The 12th man wasn't bad either.

I would think a lot of the Seahawks players are going to try and stay with the team because of the chance to repeat another winning season. And the tremendous fan support which was shown yesterday. A million fans lined the streets and filled both  Safeco Mariners and quest field Seahawks stadium. Something that was amazing was form many blocks away you could hear the fans shouting Sea from Safeco then hear Hawks from Quest field.
