Looks good! what's it have for a engine?
That would make a good log truck its got the 20,000 pound front axle in it. And im guessing a 3406b cat about 475 hp.
3406b 425hp

What year? Wheelbase? Spring or air ride? Looks nice! You putting a loader on it?
Looks like a nice truck
Whats in it for the tranny
It's a 1989. It was a good friend of mine that owned it. It's in amazing shape for its age. No rust at all. No slag between the double frame.248 inch wheel base.24feet bac to end of frame.20,000front 40,000 rear, air ride. 15 speed. I'm adding a 20,000" HLM Hendrickson lift axle. And putting my 120 four stick prentice on it.I will also be adding timbren overload rubber blocks.ill post pics as I go.
Can't wait to see the pictures ! Looks like a great truck to make into a log truck.
Had a 3406 b in my old truck lots of pulling power nice looking truck 8) 8)

(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/23815/image%7E62.jpg) moving along. Have to move some cross members .
I love to see old gear reworked and given a new life. Keep the pics coming.
That will be a nice truck, 3406 B will go along time. I did what your doing with my new log truck, bought a sheet rock truck and moved my loader and bunks over onto it. Your going to rear mount the picker right ?
No. front mount loader.rear mount lift axle. We can't pull pup trailers in this state. Rear mount makes it harder to haul firewood.(nobody bucks it to exact lenght). I can keep the over all lenght of the truck shorter that way also.It will be the same as most all the picker trucks around here.24 feet BAC to end of frame. That gives me 22 foot of bunk space. Firewood will hang off 2 feet. (Or so)

(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/23815/image%7E64.jpg) got the cross members in going to mount lift axle next

Alot of time invested but worth it. Your gaining. Trying to convince a friend of mine that its cheaper and easier to put one together, alot of the stuff for sale is a rat trap. We put our Mack and Sterling together. Dont wanna sound dumb, but is it a weight thing or just no pup trailers in P.A ? Up here a cab mounted loader is getting kinda rare. Being rear mounted I still get 7-8 cord in the bunks, or about 4200 ft.
80,000 gross truck and trailer. 73,280 truck. All that's left is 6,720
Must be the same in Maine. You don't see the pup trailers at all. They make sense if u can run them.
Personally I don't care for rear loaders. You can't hang a 32' log out the back of them. :D

80k.. ha. The guy who hauls my pulp is legal with 33ton on the truck and pup, I think 112k gross. Different strokes for different folks, I will never have another cab loader.
I saw the pups come and go. Seem like the late 70's.
This is a very common sight in Maine.

Same with up here in Ontario loader mounted on the back with a 3 or 4 legger pup behind...
Nice to see your rig coming toghether. Here in Michigan we ask where the rest of it is. Truck and trailer are allowed 11 axles with the right combo you can gross 164,000 lbs. You can move a lot of wood with one of those but when they get stuck its a real bugger.

dose that have hendrixion air ride? with the single spring? if so i had a couple crack in the center bolt hole. the diffrence between 40k and 46k is the thickness of the spring and bigger u bolts. not the rears just the springs

11 axle's is a lot of tires to keep up with. LOL I counted up the other night and I have 52 tires to keep up and I am retired. Make that 56, I just bought a backhoe. Oh yea 62 tires. I got a trailer to haul the the backhoe with. Forgot to count the spares.
It's international corporate air ride. Single spring. Similar to hendrickson.I am a little Leary of it.

90% of the ones up here use pressure treated between the bunks and frames to smooth out any irregularities, plus not a direct metal to metal for rust to hide.

is that arctic cat green? i always used u bolt rods to hold the body on. hauled wood with a lt9000 ford for 15 yrs that had a single frame. 3/8 rail that was 14" deep. i have a dump truck with the same frame. never a problem
It's called vibrant lime green. It's double frame up to the cab. It has the heavy 14 inch deep single from there forward also. The bunks I have are made to bolt to the frame so we set them on a sub frame welded them to the sub frame and bolted the bunk flange to the truck frame.
Good to see the double frame! Guy up here has 3 air ride tri axle log trucks! Seems to do a good job!
You're gonna have a really nice truck when you're done. Makes me want to finish building my Peterbilt tri-axle log truck that I've been workin on for the last few years, never can seem to find the time to finish putting it together.

120 prentice?? I had one that i ;loaded many trailers with and broke up like that! Its the swinging allm the way the wrong direction if you no what i mean. The other 2 i owned that just loaded my truck = no problems. Now its off a good welding shop should be able to fix it right.
Ya. We fix it our selves. Ill air arc it all off and weld a new one inch plate in. No hole in the center this time. Solid plate throughout.
dont use mild steel. that wasnt or shouldnt have been. and get some 11018 rod to weld it with
What Snowstorm said X 2!
i have trouble finding high strength rod here. i had some 9018 but used um all up........they did weld nice and hold up. i have a crack in the skidder arch i welded with 7018 and it cracked again........the 9018 crack is holding.
any y'all know a web site sells good rod?
(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/23815/image%7E83.jpg) old plate off. 4 hours of air arc

(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/23815/image%7E85.jpg) new pin and bushing to. Wow were the salty. 285.00 for the pin and 200 each for those bushings
Nice work
I love to see when people old stuff put back into use.
How many gpm do you think you need to run it ?
The worst part is the loader is a 1999. My 1985 is in nicer shape. I'm not sure about gpm. The filters are 50. There's 2.I already had the pump.dual stage.
ga jones is that going to be the color of the picker my dad had an old mack that was orange the picker was black the bunks was green he got a good deal on green paint ;D a friend of ares hand painted coxs pumpkin picker on each side of the hood every one had a good time over that it took 2 years for him to get even (all in good fun) but dad had the last laugh good luck with your build cant wait to see it all shined up
Nothing wrong with that green. smiley_thumbsup
Yep lime green. All but the stick and the boom.the loader was close by when I finished the fenders and fuel tanks and I had a lot of paint left. So she got it too!!!now I'm out of paint and I want to do the grapple to. I guess the tower will get another coat. LoL
looks like that loader was infested with grease worms. they'll eat all the grease out of a joint in no time.
:D :D
I have a tractor that I put the grease to. No grease worms on that thing!!
Think grease worms have been hanging our skidder. :D great job on the truck!!
(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/23815/image%7E86.jpg) pins and bushings in boom are done. Got the new mounting plate welded on. The hydro headboard is coming off it's leaking all over. It's way to heavy anyway. Almost ready to set it on the truck.
So you are just using some threaded rods and a piece of flat steel across to hold it in place ?
Nice welding job smiley_thumbsup

Nice looking truck and a great job on the upgrades! 8) 8)
"Bad Ox" on the fender?
There are specific bolts made for mounting loaders. That's what I'm using. If u look at most loader mounts there are tubes between the top and bottom plates around those bolts so the frame rails don't crush. I will block the inside of the frame rails. I will get pics before I mount it.
Bad cat. On the fender. (Cat engine)
I just caught this build.Nice job Ga Jones .I am restoring an old pete now so I know what you are going through. It"s on the general board ,restoration underway.I've been running cats for over 30 years .Looking forward to seeing your project complete.al

(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/23815/image~95.jpg) this is the box in the frame to keep the rail from colapsing. Nothing fancy but works better than the tubes prentice used.
(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/23815/image~96.jpg) hydro headboard scrap. This is the left side fuel tank. It is now the hydraulic tank. Aluminum 120 gal. Should keep it cool.

There is a way to turn your photos 90° at a time, in your gallery just below the pic you click on. One of three tabs there will work. ;) If you want to.

Looks like you are ready for your first load!!!!! Nice looking eagle!!!
I usually do rotate them. I tried today and they came out stretched. Idk what's up with them
Looks good!

You got you a hell of a nice set up there ! Sharp lookin truck and otta last you a good while with that kitty in it.
That knuckle boom is one convenient peace of equipment, hope to have one myself in the next couple years but we'll see ::) Right now I'm putting in the First 5 years you hear old timmers talk of. Except I'm a little ahead not having to use Mule's and cross cut saws ;D

You can correct the orientation of your pics, if you want to. There is a tab on the bottom left to click to either crop or rotate.
By clicking on "Modify" (top right) of your post, it can be edited by deleting the pic url, and adding the corrected one.
If you want. ;)
Impressive. How much of a load you think you can put on her if you call this a half load ?
Nice rig! I wish I would have had that setup in my horse logging days! Rarely do I ever get to see self loader set-ups, been seeing a couple self loaders hauling stave logs but thats it. Anyway, nice rig!
Nicely done, no more waiting on the trucker to haul. Want kind insurance do ya have to have in your neck of the woods for the truck to be on the road.

hows the truck working out?
I'm still waiting for the state to approve the modification. I had to license it as a tandem gross 56000. I've hauled some firewood and about 3000 feet of hemlock saw logs. It's working great . The truck weighs 29640 empty. I'm very impressed with the timbren rubber blocks. It's very stable. Loader has a bit of play in the swing bearing and main boom pin.

So technically the tag axle you put on isn't recognized? I seriously hate this state. My old man wants to buy a truck and put me in it, but I don't want to drive because of PA-DOT's "Gestapo-like" nutswinging. Tandem coal trucks in KY can haul more than you can here on a quad axle. Rediculous. Sweet truck, though! Got my eye on one just like this. It's got the 3406b and an 8over. Tandem tractor. Fresh overhaul on motor. Can get it for $5k. Just gotta come up with the cash :D

That's all? My 2574 international is just over 24,000 empty. Is a 10 wheeler. That's with sideboards, fuel and a full set of tire chains. Gross is 54900.
Yes I had to pay the tax on the lift axle but they have to issue a new title with the 73,280 gross. Could take anywhere from 3 weeks to 3 months!
