HI All,
I'm in the fortunate position of being able to finally buy a Lucas, after only 3 years drooling!!
I am stuck on 6" or 8" model, the $ difference is acceptable if justifiable.
Basically I'm wanting to know what use are 8" cuts, I am wanting to make some money off my mill, also build my own house with it. So anyone who can fill me in on what 8" lumber can be used for - so I can offer suggestions to my better half.
Thanks all.
It is pretty easy to use 1x6 instead of 1x8 for sheathing, decking or whatever else 1x is typically used for.
I opted for an 8" mill, because when cutting floor joists on 16" centers 8" (#2 or better) 2x material can span 12 feet. Very important to me, as 2x6 can not do the same job. It is not fun double cutting just for an 8" piece of material, especially over and over and over again. Plus, it means turning the whole carriage around on the Lucas. Advantage: Peterson.
Captain
I've been thinking the same thing as you.
I don't have all the $$$ together yet, so I've got time to think on it some more.
on sawmill exchange there is a 8" Peterson ATS for less than the Lucas new... might be worth a calll to check it out.
HI Captain,
thanks, good info -the kind of thing I'm trying to find out.
Don - unfortunately I am in Australia, so shipping might end up being a bit heavy on the pocket especially for a used mill, but thanks anyway.
Any info from others????
Allan
Sigidi, you may already know this, but the Peterson web site lists used mills that owners are trying to sell. I've often wished I could have better access to those used mills since used Petersons don't often show up here in the states.

Hi Allan,
My family business (Mullumbimby Woodworks) is the Australian agent for Peterson Sawmills.
We have a demo 8" Peterson ATS for a real good price.
Email me on woodwork@mullum.com.au for a quote.
